Student's hygiene?

Published

I know that there is a thread somewhere but I need help. I have a student who is in 2nd grade and his hygiene is very poor. On a normal day is very unkempt, has a slight smell of BO, and never has underwear and socks on. Last year it was an issue too. He has a sister who is a year older and doesn't have a problem with hygiene. Teacher wanted to talk to me about the issue because the student is basically being excluded by other students due to the odor. How do I go about this? What is a good plan of action? I know I have to talk to the parents but should I also include the social worker too?

For those wondering how do I know about him not having underwear and socks? HE TALKS ABOUT IT ALL THE TIME. He has had quite a bit of accidents and will inform me of the fact he ain't wearing them...

I have extra lotions, body sprays, mouthwash, soaps, ect for body odor issues. I will do it the first time, and if it keep shappening, I have the teacher notify the parents, or sometimes the counselor if it's a monetary issue.

Oh yes, the dreaded smelly sneakers!!

We used to leave my sons outside at night in hopes a feral animal would steal them!!!

I had some workout shoes that really smelled after a particularly intense workout. I put dryer sheets in them overnight and they smelled great in the morning!

Or a rogue hamster :)

A friend who is a guidance counselor and parent of a child on the spectrum found that he struggled with the stimulation of an overhead shower so they got a hand held piece that he could control, Voila! The kid takes a shower everyday now!!

Another child would only wear black, black, black. The parent couldn't get him to wear anything else, so they got him 7 black shirts, 7 pair of jeans, socks and and briefs. He wears clean clothes every single day.

I would definitely get the social worker involved! They are really good at these kinds of things.

Do you guys have access to a social worker right away? We have to go through a referral process and the social worker ends up coming to the school after about 2 weeks to follow up. We are very rural but was curious if other schools have access to help so readily. That would be great. We dont have counselors either.

The social worker is right down the hall from me so I am able to walk in and talk to her. Unfortunately she is gone on Wednesdays so I have to wait for her to come in tomorrow.
