Student Nurse Externships/Internships

Hi everyone! I'm curious, is anyone applying to any externships for the summer or for a year round rotation? If so....

Which one(s) are you interested in and why?

Which one(s) have you applied to?

Have you gotten accepted into any programs?

What specialty/area are you interested in working in?

How long is the program?

What do you think you'll get out of the program?

I'll start by answering my own questions:

Which one(s) are you interested in and why? I was really interested in MD Anderson Cancer Center and St. Lukes Episcopal Hospital. I had a previous clinical rotation at MD Anderson and really enjoyed it. I've never been to St. Lukes but i heard that they have an amazing heart center (#7 in the U.S. I think) and i thought that would be something that i could really get an experience out of.

Which one(s) have you applied to? I live in Houston (go to Texas Woman's) so I applied to the MD Anderson Cancer Center, St. Lukes Episcopal Hospital, and Michael E. Debakey Veteran's Affairs.

Have you gotten accepted into any programs? I got accepted into 2/3. I did not get into MD Anderson. I got accepted into St. Lukes and the VA hospital. I chose St. Lukes.

What specialty/area are you interested in working in? At St. Lukes we will be in one area for 4 weeks and another area for 4 weeks. I chose a general med-surg unit and an ICU (i'm not very picky with which one, but i have an interest in SICU, Cardiovascular recovery, Coronary Care Unit, NeuroICU, and Transplant)

How long is the program? over here it's 9 weeks during the summer, but i think if you do very well they may extend the externship and offer you a PCA position until you graduate and then you can see about becoming a full fledged RN on their units.

What do you think you'll get out of the program? I think i will get a feel of what it's like to work like a real nurse (working 3 days a week, with 12 hour shifts). I'll get the opportunity to enhance my nursing skills and learn more. Become comfortable working in an Intensive care unit. A very good learning experience. I think it'll also be alot of fun!

Anybody else?

Specializes in Telemetry.

Where I am in Fortlauderdale, I do not have an externship program and so I will just observe the procedures at the hospital in which I work. I worked as a CNA before and so it is not very hard for me to understand concepts.

Which one(s) are you interested in and why? The local hospital in town does offer internships - some on Med/Surg, one in ER (that I am aware of) and 1 or 2 a year in the ICU.

Which one(s) have you applied to? I had previously worked the ICU as an AHUC (Advanced Health Unit Coordinator or combo of CNA and unit secretary), and was encouraged to apply for their externship.

Have you gotten accepted into any programs? About 2 weeks ago I had a shadow day in the ICU with the preceptor and an interview with the manager. I start May 23rd!

What specialty/area are you interested in working in? I LOVE community health, but know I need experience in the hospital first. I also am a fairly decent administrator... so at some point I may look for a position to combine the two. In the meantime, if things go well with the externship, there is probably a job waiting for me in the ICU after the NCLEX next summer.

How long is the program? RN's work 12's in the ICU. I will be working Fri - Sun in the summer, or fulltime, and then part-time on the weekends in the school year.

What do you think you'll get out of the program? More hands-on experience then any clinical experience at my school would ever be able to provide me. The extern on the unit now, under the eye of the preceptor, is managing her own vent pts., and assists with transesophageal echocardiograms (TEE's), to mention just a few things. She has been on the unit for 9 mos and graduates this month. Next spring, that (hopefully) will be me!

Is it too late to apply for a internship in NYC?

Specializes in ICU, Emergency Department.

Which one(s) are you interested in and why? I was interested in whatever I could get, basically!

Which one(s) have you applied to? I applied to the Nurse Externship prgram through the North Shore-LIJ Health System in NY (on Long Island).

Have you gotten accepted into any programs? Yes, I was accepted to the Externship in Plainview Hospital.

What specialty/area are you interested in working in? In general? Not sure. I said for my externship I'd prefer Med-Surg (because I'm somewhat comfortable there) but was open to any possibilities.

How long is the program? Ten weeks, June 6-August 16.

What do you think you'll get out of the program? Mostly clinical experience, which is what I'm looking for. I want to get more comfortable juggling multiple patients and working on time-management more than anything else. Any new learning will be icing on the cake. Oh, and a nice regular paycheck is a big bonus, too ;)

I will be externing over the summer in an ICU department and I am very excited about it, however I am nervous because we don't do our critical care rotation until the fall semester. Wish me luck!

Hi -

I just found this thread on externships and was happy to find someone in Houston with experience in this area. I will be in my last year of nursing school next year and want to apply for an externship but am having a hard time finding which hospitals in Houston offer this program. I know St. Lukes did in 2006 because that is the most recent info I found through Google. I have sent them an email requesting more information.

Do you mind telling me a little about the requirements to qualify for an externship at the hospitals you mentioned?

Thank you so much and congratulations!:)

I am interested in applying to NSLIJ's hospital system for a nurse externship this summer. I am from long island so this is the most convenient choice for me! Unfortunately, NSLIJ has been dragging their feet with posting the externship position. I've talked to the nurse recruitment department numerous times and they say to check the careers site daily. It is frustrating because my fellow classmates are beginning to here back from their externship programs! I was wondering if you could let me know when the position went up back when you applied!! I've heard that it will be posted in may. Is this how late they posted yours?

THANK YOU!

Have you heard back from them yet? I applied there as well and have yet to hear anything back.

Thank you.

I ended up applying and hearing back within a week. I scheduled an interview and went to the Talent Acquisition center for it about two weeks ago! I felt pretty good about the way the interview went but now just wondering when I'll hear back. How did things go for you?

Specializes in Neuroscience/Brain and Stroke.

I just accepted an Nurse Intern posion with St. Lukes (Missouri), it's not a program but rather a PRN job to train you before graduating. We get to follow nurses and perform nursing duties under supervision and during busy times when the nurses are too busy for an Intern we do fall back and aid the CNA's. Not having experience with any patient care other than phlebotomy I'm super excited for this!

Good luck in your externship!:D
