Struggling.....Should I do Kaplan or Hurst?

Published

I have failed boards several times and it has been 6 years, some of you may have seen my previous posts. Anyway, it's time for me to pass those boards!!!!!! I am looking into Kaplan and Hurst and am wondering which is better. I have read that Kaplan is very similiar to the boards, is Hurst too? Also have read that people like that Hurst has little ways of helping your remember things. Just looking for honest opinions. I am doing it this time to PASS!!!

Live with the current NCLEX exam book. Most of the top names wil do very well.

50 questions each day for 6 weeks before you sit for boards. Programs that use the computer format of the test are very useful. Next time you take the test you will pass, come and tell us when you do.

I swear by Kaplan.. What is the best about this program is the tree, and the Q-bank. It is full of questions that are REALLY tough....I worked on it for a month faithfully. I would recommend it to anyone! :coollook:

I was offered the Kaplan review class with my first job during orientation and then purchased book which included CD and online review. I passed first try w/ the min amount of questions and felt very confident going into exam:nurse:.

Keep in mind the test bank is very large. No one will have the similar question. Critical thinking is very important. I don't have money to pay either of the program, I use ATI, a program that our school use our tuition pay for it. I pass with 80 questions. Before the last minute, I was listening the portion how to priority, which I struggle for. After the test, I realized that you don't want to see questions that you can pick according to your memery, such as S&S, the is in the lower class. I forgot what are the four classes, I know there tow classes that you don't want to see, they are belong to failure. The test will give the tow pass classes first if you fail to answer, they will give you the two failure question until to get the right answer and then promote you. If you practice how to think as the test writer, you will have no problem to pass. Good luck!

After completing the nursing program what I did was the Hurst online and then utilized Kaplan for their q-bank only as well as the NCLEX question book. Since you have been out of school for I believe you said 6 years, that is a long time and you need a good refresher. Hurst was perfect for this because it gave me a good refresher of the core material of what I had learned over the 2 years of my nursing program. Kaplan is good for strategy on test taking however I feel it personally does not help me one bit if I do not know core concepts like Hurst teaches and reminds you of. So my best suggestion is get a good refresher through Hurst and then if you know someone who already has Kaplan, see if they will let you log on just so you can practice their test questions and get you used to the types of questions you will get in NCLEX. Good luck to you!!!!!

From reading these posts it appears that a combination of Hurst and Kaplan might be best. Right now I downloaded the Saunder's NCLEX as I am doing Med-Surge 1 in nursing school and our school has ATI already incorporated in our tuition. Best of Luck to the ones studying for the NCLEX right now.

not familiar with Hurst, but I have taken the Kaplan course, and I benefited from it, if you follow exactly what they say as far as how to answer the question, you will get it right even if u have no idea what the question is talking about.

I have tried ATI and Saunders, neither was helpful. ATI was a waste of time, the questions on the NCLEX are nothing like what ATI offers. Saunders is good for knowledge but knowledge questions is not the goal of the NCLEX, so i advice to only use that to get comfortable with the information. KAPLAN solves all those issues.

I have taken both the Hurst Review and Kaplan.

The Kaplan live and online reviews were provided to our school with no cost out of pocket to the students, as the school was paying for everyone to attend. Kaplan, in my opinion, is a good review of strategies for answering difficult questions at the application and analysis levels. It is not a good content review by any stretch of the imagination, but it is an excellent review of test-taking skills and ways to approach those bothersome higher level NCLEX style questions.

My friend and I paid to attend the Hurst live review a couple of months ago. The Hurst Review is a wonderful review of basic nursing content, which is what my friend and I felt we really needed. The Hurst Review spent relatively little time going over strategies for answering NCLEX style questions, but they spent days going over the content that every test taker should know in order to pass NCLEX.

If you feel that you need a comprehensive content review, go with Hurst. If you feel that you need a review of stretegic test-taking skills, go with Kaplan. By the way, I took NCLEX-RN in Texas last month and passed with the minimum of 75 questions.

I totally agree with you.

I personally paid for kaplan, and our school gave us "hesi-review" which was a content review such like hurst review.

I enjoyed kaplan and I passed with 75Q as well.

my friend however, she hated kaplan-- but because she did not do the things that she was supposed to-- and after failing she went to hurst because I told her to (I got the idea from this site.. he he ) but she ended up absolutely loving hurst and then she passed second time with 75Q too!

I am glad I did kaplan & I am glad I told my friend about hurst!

now I am listening to helen feuer home study review (which I listenend to it as well while studying for nclex 3 yrs ago) for my excelsior college exams for my university, and so far I have passed both my exams. now I am studying for psych for next week. God willing I will pass that exam too.

then onto my last semester of my RN=BSN program!!

Why not try NCSBN's Review for the NCLEX-RN Examination? You can sign up for 3, 5, 8 or 15 weeks of online access to the course (ranging from $50 to $160).

I actually paid for this site and to me it was the worst site ever. The questions and answers were so so so simple and extremely easy that I could not even waste my time with it.

it was for me $49/down the drain that I ended up giving my pw to my friend-- who took kaplan with me, and who also passed with the 265max questions allowed and 6hr time limit.
