Struggling.....Should I do Kaplan or Hurst?

Nursing Students NCLEX

Published

I have failed boards several times and it has been 6 years, some of you may have seen my previous posts. Anyway, it's time for me to pass those boards!!!!!! I am looking into Kaplan and Hurst and am wondering which is better. I have read that Kaplan is very similiar to the boards, is Hurst too? Also have read that people like that Hurst has little ways of helping your remember things. Just looking for honest opinions. I am doing it this time to PASS!!!

I did Hurst and loved it! Each program has their own pluses. It depends on what you need as far as test taking.

I have taken both the Hurst Review and Kaplan.

The Kaplan live and online reviews were provided to our school with no cost out of pocket to the students, as the school was paying for everyone to attend. Kaplan, in my opinion, is a good review of strategies for answering difficult questions at the application and analysis levels. It is not a good content review by any stretch of the imagination, but it is an excellent review of test-taking skills and ways to approach those bothersome higher level NCLEX style questions.

My friend and I paid to attend the Hurst live review a couple of months ago. The Hurst Review is a wonderful review of basic nursing content, which is what my friend and I felt we really needed. The Hurst Review spent relatively little time going over strategies for answering NCLEX style questions, but they spent days going over the content that every test taker should know in order to pass NCLEX.

If you feel that you need a comprehensive content review, go with Hurst. If you feel that you need a review of stretegic test-taking skills, go with Kaplan. By the way, I took NCLEX-RN in Texas last month and passed with the minimum of 75 questions.

My school made it mandatory for us to take the Kaplan review. It cost each of us over $300. Had us take their review sessions 4 straight days in a row right after graduation. We were in the classroom from 9am-4pm doing nothing but NCLEX questions learning their "tree". We have access to their online classroom and NCLEX questions. I didn't like their classroom sessions, but I've been doing the questions online and like them. We'll see how things work out once I take the NCLEX.

I tried kaplan and saunders but both did not work for meh.At this crucial time i decided to pay for Hurst and lovin it so far.Hurst review focuses on the important content that are needed for the NCLEX-RN exam but inorder to succeed have to study in her style and after studying each content i am getting most questions right than wrong. But Hurst only contain 300 questions to practice. But right now after i finish each content i practice questions from Kaplan(2010-2011 edition),linda la charity, saunders questons.Husrt is developing my confidence level which i loose after failing the exam 2nd time.

Gud luck :)

I swear by HURST. I passed in an hour and a half with 75 questions. You do have to study and use the tools they gave you. You can not just take the class and then take it the next day.

If you don't have the money for both, take Hurst and buy the Kaplan review book for the bare bones test taking strategies in it.

kcshabi,

did you buy the Kaplan questions or are you doing the review also?

I've heard good things about Kaplan. I'm using it, and I like it so far!

I cannot afford 2 review course at the same time.So i decided to buy a new edition by kaplan(2010-2011) edition. So i am practicing from that.I personally did not like Kaplan review at all.

I just completed HURST and loved it. Ive been going over my material for two weeks now and I feel more confident about taking the NCLEX.... I also bought the Kaplan Test Taking Strategies Book to improve my test taking skills. Goodluck with your decision.

I shelled out the big money for Kaplan... and so far, I am glad I did. Yes, I am also studying content on the side, but since taking the online class, my scores improved dramatically on ALL of my reviews: Saunders, NCLEX 4000, Exam Cram, etc... They say that if you are prepared in Kaplan's techniques, and truly fulfill your end of the deal (to take advantage of all of the parts of the course), you will be MORE than ready to pass NCLEX. That's what I am counting on, anyway...
