Struggles with finding a nursing job....

Nurses New Nurse

Published

A nursing degree today is a total waste. You will not get hired due to a lack of new grad programs, oversaturation of new grad RNs and an influx of forgein RNs. You will end up unemployed and in debt without any skills that you can use in any other market. Look it up. google "RN New Grads unemployed". NOBODY WILL HIRE NEW GRADS. The scant new grad opportunities that exist see HUNDREDS if applicants for 10-20 positions. Do not waste your money..........do something else----------the RN ship has sailed----it is over.

WOW...the last thing people need is more negative words. Maybe, we should just shed light on facts (ie. the job market is poor, ok, or good in some areas) and let people "make their own journey". But doing that would be too much like right!

Well if your willing to give up so fast because you can not find a job thats your thing. And I wish you the best of luck in finding one.

But if your letting one "bump" in the road make you think "nursing sucks" already you should have rethought your career and higher education choice.

Im a pre-nursing student and I am aware that it may be hard for me down the road but this is WHAT I WANT! I knew it would be tough and im prepared for that. But if your giving up this easy, your heart must really not be into it.....

You should stay positive....If this is really what you want

just my :twocents:

well said everyone!!!!:yeah:

I'm really grateful to all those who have posted about new grads finding jobs!! Thanks for the boost in confidence in this thread.

the quotes below pretty much sum up the same sentiments i have about you and your comments, and no your post is not going to change my career goals in the least. i believe in myself enough to know that i will become a nurse one day and that someone will hire me and appreciate my talents. it will not be easy, and i acknowledge that way ahead of time, but i am up for the challenge because good things come to those who hold their head up high and don't give up. new grads may not be getting hired as readily as they were in the past, but as has been demonstrated here some are being hired. too bad you came into nursing thinking that employers were going to lay the red carpet out for you, you have been rudely awakened. and clearly you're not handling it too well.

those of us that endeavor to pursue places in this profession can do without people peppering our goals with negativity. go find another line of work that guarantees you a job tomorrow if that's what you're looking for.

no one owes you, or any new grad, a job or anything else for that matter. i agree that new grad jobs are hard to find across the board. it isn't limited to nursing. ... if you continue to drive down the negative highway, it will show in your body language, your tone, and on your face. interviewers can see and feel that in an interview too.

i don't think anyone is saying it will be easy and no one on here is living in a fantasy. just because we are optimistic, doesn't make it a fantasy. no one on here is saying we will land jobs before we graduate and make tons of money. ... the economy fluctuates and it always turns around. it will not be like this forever. that's basic economics. maybe while your waiting for a job to land in your lap you can take an economics course. can we not be so narrow minded and think it's only affecting new grad nurses? come on, do you not watch or read the news? do you think the 13 million unemployed are nurses?

Not all jobs that will accept or use a BSN require nursing experience. Pharmaceutical sales, you can get an MBA or a JD with a BSN - I have seen postings for RNs to work in wellness areas that say "new grads with an interest in health/fitness/wellness are welcome to apply).

Why did you post that, in such a negative light?

Did you get turned down for job after job?

Are you unhappy you went to NS? Do you feel you wasted precious time and money? Made pointless sacrifices?

Because something tells me that if you just got picked up for an ICU new-grad program making $32/hr, you wouldn't have posted that. And if ICU isn't your thing, or $32 an hour isn't the going rate for where you live, sub in some specialty and some amount of money that fits.

New grads are being hired. My state's BON (Arizona) just did a survey - and it said new grads are being hired. In their "ideal" job? NO. But like a lot of professions, sometimes you gotta work your way up.

I just read your post on May 26 about NCLEX, OP.

I see now where your negativity comes from. Perhaps your drive and passion are gone, but do you really feel that trying to destroy other's drive and passion, are going to bring yours back and make you feel better?

Yeah, we will see how you feel after the hell of nursing school and nclex only to be told that you need 1-2 years of acute care experience to be hired.

OP I read your old posts & you mentioned you were in CA. From what I've read on this board , it seems like CA is the hardest place right now to get a new grad job. Have you ever considered moving?

Yeah, we will see how you feel after the hell of nursing school and nclex only to be told that you need 1-2 years of acute care experience to be hired.

Maybe you should have done some research prior to going to school if you wanted a position in acute care right out the gate. I certainly wouldn't want a new grad taking care of me while in acute care. I understand you are frustrated and therefore are very negative. I am not that upset about your post because it is out of frustration. I actually think it is funny because had someone posted this prior to your nursing education, would you have stopped or not gone? No. There is always a need for teachers, yet we are laying off teachers. What do you know, people still go and get a degree in teaching. Why? They are laid off and under paid and you have to have experience before being hired....how can anyone ever be a teacher...yet we have teachers. How does every single nurse get this so called 2 yrs. of acute care so they can be hired, but we have nurses working....HOW? How is that possible? I wonder how old you are because this isn't just happening in nursing and it isn't new to 2010 or 2008. Try many many many years ago with a magnitude of different jobs, people still had to start entry level even with a college degree. I passed my driving test, where is my car so I can drive? What do you mean I don't get a car...I have a driver's license....I went to school and passed a written and driving test and now you say I can't drive...where's my car. I did everything you told me to do. So a person can either save money and get a car or have their license and never drive and you can have your RN degree and never work as an RN or you can try a different approach and keep at it because there are nurses working so obviously jobs are there.

The way it was explained to me, was that nursing is very much a career that involves workplace politics. Not necessarily in a bad way, but the general consensus is "Work hard, put in your time as a grunt, and play the game, eventually you will work your way up the ladder of experience and get the job you desired when you first entered Nursing School"

And truth be told, I have no problem with that. I welcome the challenge.

You know what would have been great? If this was one of those threads with 0 replies :lol2: but I couldn't resist the urge to reply either LOL.
