Stony Brook BSN - Summer/Fall 2011 Applicants

Published

ok, it's never too early to start a thread about applying for 2011 ... :D ... which i am most definitely doing even though i am still waitlisted for 2010. i just won't be able to attend this year if i get in ... :(

but that's ok! i'll be done with all my prereqs and have time to write a better application (if in fact that is at all possible, you know?).

anyone else applying to stony brook for summer 2011?

Specializes in Medical and general practice now LTC.
Hi I was accepted to the 12 month program at Stonybrook but I am from Ontario, Canada. Does anyone know of students that took the program and then came back to Canada to work? Is there any chance you won't be able to write the exam and get your licence? I phoned the College of nurses of Ontario but they said they can't evaluate any programs until they are completed. I find this crazy! Thanks so much as I really want to go to Stonybrook but not if I can't come back to Ontario!

College of RN's (CNO) can't make any decision until they see a complete set of transcripts especially if it isn't a program they have seen before

Specializes in ICU / PCU / Telemetry / Oncology.
As for PACO... had to give a big shout out, b/c we were in this same boat last year together, & I'm so very happy you made it... I know you'll be from out-of-state, but don't let that deter you from making the big trip over. It's definitely an adventure... I made the trek out from California, & as much as I miss my friends & family, I do not regret my decision whatsoever. I've made awesome friends & time is flying by! Good luck to everyone & hope to see you in the Summer!

OMG xtine, thank you! I know you can imagine what kind of relief I am experiencing after what I have been through. Stony Brook applications being part of my life since Oct 2009! Is that incredible or what? I still have my 2010 waitlist letter and the letter I got last July letting me know that the class was filled and I was no longer waitlisted and that I would have to reapply all over again. :crying2: I think 2 things that helped me this time around was getting rid of one of my recommenders from last year in favor of a more relevant one and rewriting my essay from scratch. I was tempted to submit the same one I submitted the first time (after all, they were the same questions) but I thought it would be better to rewrite. Thankfully, now I know I did the right thing! Finances are a big concern for me right now and this is what is keeping me from throwing myself full into Stony Brook's decision. Figures, I live in NY most of my life and I end up as a non-resident now, lol. Want to return to NY to be closer to everyone, friends, family and SO. I have 2 ABSN programs here in FL that I have yet to hear from that will be lots cheaper, but should know by 3/15. In the meantime, I have to reply to SBU's offer and I don't want to decline that one!

However, I attend SBU for my first degree so did they look at previous SBU students first?

I'm not an SBU alumn, so that's prob not it. However, I was a re-applicant from last year, and I heard somewhere that re-applicants do get some consideration.

Out of the people who have been accepted, just curious, did you have all of your prereqs completed, or are you still in classes now finishing up? I wonder if they ended up choosing people who already had all of the prereqs completed.

Yes, all my prereqs were completed this time. Last year when I was waitlisted, I was still needing micro. But I really think my advantages this time were a new essay and a change in one of my recommendations (from a non-nursing supervisor in my line of work, which in hindsight was good but not relevant). My recommendations this time came from 2 professors of my prereqs and my supervisor at the hospital where I volunteer.

To the current students: Is the deposit due when you accept the admission offer or can that be paid later? How much is the deposit? I read somewhere it was $150 but I am not sure.

I took Micro this past fall, and had my grade sent to SB in early January..It showed on Solar that my new official transcript was received Jan 10, but when I got my acceptance it said Micro grade was still pending. I also still need to complete my last prereq, any other science, and take a BLS cert course.. I think thats it

Hmmm, no changes on my SOLAR acct yet either :(

still no changes to mine either...

:anpom: I HAVE BEEN ACCEPTED!!!! :anpom:

I logged into SOLAR and saw the tabs!!

If you got the new set of tabs: Under the Student Admission tab, click the "Admission Decision Response" then click the "View Decision" link. If you were accepted, you will see the Congratulations! letter and a link to accept or decline admission at the bottom.

If you don't see the tabs today: hang tight! Perhaps they are still "loading" SOLAR!

Congrats to everyone! :)

Hey Paco,

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! I am so so happy for you, you really deserve this acceptance. I never had a doubt in my mind for one sec regarding your acceptance, because good things surely follow good people. I have been very very busy with teaching this semester, and today I just decided to check the thread and I found joy and happiness all over. This is a very good news, am so elated you got in, and am so proud of you. Congrats again, and I really wish you well in your decision making, since you have a concern regarding the finances. But it could be nice if you decide eventually to go to SBU, you cant just abandon all your thread crew just like that lol!!! Even I was thinking I might be lucky to meet you in NYC before leaving for Boston, and am sure everyone is looking forward to meeting the founding father of the thread, with the admiring personality. Anyway, congrats also to all those who got accepted, and those still awaiting decision I wish you good luck. Am going to check my solar now to see if i have anything in there, just to check for the fun of it.

still no changes to mine either...

Hey trouble 66,

I need you to just hang in there, don't lose hope at all. It is definitely going to be well with you. I wish you good luck.

I wonder why nothing has shown up on my solar. I keep trying to come up with reasons to try to feel better but I just don't get it. Woke up an 3 am just to check it and i'm doing so once again. I am out of control lol. Congrats to everyone who has been accepted so far :)

I'm from Ontario too!!! As for your question, you can definitely write the provincial exam! I don't the CNO is aware of the specifics of your question. As long as you have an "RN" status, you will be able to write their exam. I hope this helps and if you need any more info inbox me! Congrats on getting in....I'm waiting to hear about the 2 year program! :uhoh3:

I wonder if there are going to be any changes on SOLAR today or if we have to wait for a while again.....

Paco - congrats!! You surely deserve this!! Cheers to everyone else who has been admitted as well!
