Hello everyone!
I applied to Stony Brook's Basic (2-year) BSN program 3 weeks a go and thought it may be helpful to start up a forum.
If you are:
currently applying or plan on applying, a former applicant, a current SBU student, I'd love to hear from you!
Has everyone finished their perquisites? Does anyone else have a not so competitive GPA (like me)? Does anyone know who is considered a competitive applicant? Where is everyone else applying?
I look forward to speaking with everyone and hopefully entering the Fall '12 class together!

Gemmie, I'm going to be honest with you. A 2.94 GPA is actually a good GPA. You would be considered a B student, but for nursing school you need to come up at least 0.36 in GPA points. And to tell you the truth getting into a state school for a BSN is highly competitive. You will be competing with students that have a 3.0+ and many of them do have 3.7+ GPAs. I can tell you this though, It is easier to get into an accelerated program than a traditional BSN program (solely based on what I have observed in the past three years) and it is also easier to get into a community college. I would suggest that you apply to as many local community colleges as possible and accelerated programs as possible. Volunteer at a hospital, soup kitchen, and food pantry or even something like aids walk. Everything you do counts. I can also honestly tell you that sometimes it all comes down to the luck of the draw. After being rejected, schools can and have been known to fill last minute spots in the program.
Private schools are easy to get into. I have never been rejected by a private school. But I'm sure you don't want to pay the insane tuition.
Don't get discouraged. If nursing is your dream pursue it.

Hi BioD,
I am going to start volunteering at a local hospital very soon (I have a meeting Wednesday). I am so anxious/excited to apply the anticipation is killing me! Do you know the average GPA for admitted students or have an idea of what some students had when they were accepted? If not, no worries, thanks for your help!
