Stony Brook Basic BSN Fall 2012

U.S.A. New York

Published

Hello everyone!

I applied to Stony Brook's Basic (2-year) BSN program 3 weeks a go and thought it may be helpful to start up a forum.

If you are:

currently applying or plan on applying, a former applicant, a current SBU student, I'd love to hear from you!

Has everyone finished their perquisites? Does anyone else have a not so competitive GPA (like me)? Does anyone know who is considered a competitive applicant? Where is everyone else applying?

I look forward to speaking with everyone and hopefully entering the Fall '12 class together!

Hi BioD,

I am going to start volunteering at a local hospital very soon (I have a meeting Wednesday). I am so anxious/excited to apply the anticipation is killing me! Do you know the average GPA for admitted students or have an idea of what some students had when they were accepted? If not, no worries, thanks for your help!

Gemmie, I'm going to be honest with you. A 2.94 GPA is actually a good GPA. You would be considered a B student, but for nursing school you need to come up at least 0.36 in GPA points. And to tell you the truth getting into a state school for a BSN is highly competitive. You will be competing with students that have a 3.0+ and many of them do have 3.7+ GPAs. I can tell you this though, It is easier to get into an accelerated program than a traditional BSN program (solely based on what I have observed in the past three years) and it is also easier to get into a community college. I would suggest that you apply to as many local community colleges as possible and accelerated programs as possible. Volunteer at a hospital, soup kitchen, and food pantry or even something like aids walk. Everything you do counts. I can also honestly tell you that sometimes it all comes down to the luck of the draw. After being rejected, schools can and have been known to fill last minute spots in the program.

Private schools are easy to get into. I have never been rejected by a private school. But I'm sure you don't want to pay the insane tuition.

Don't get discouraged. If nursing is your dream pursue it.

Gemmie- I agree with kitkat it's not ur gpa that is the only factor...a 2.9 is very good it's just the amount of applicants into the program and the limited number of seats to give....just work hard on that paper and do as much volunteer as you can ..anything helps

also-try your best to get B or A in the preq ur taking online now

Hi everyone! I just found out today I was accepted!!!!! After I was rejected from the accelerated program and waitlisted for the two year, I lost all hope for Stony Brook. So seeing the email today that I got in completely shocked me!!!!

@amchugh209 Congrats! :yeah:

Congrats! That's awesome.

Does anyone know roughly how many clinical hours per week we are going to be doing this fall??

In general you do one day 0700 to 1500 or so at University Hospital. The majority of folks go on Thursday but there are a few other options like 12 hour weekend tours etc. Depends on the clinical professors and what hours they want to do.

Just a quick post to make this easier for someone to find.....

I was turned away from the, 2–year BSN program. I would like know how many people applied to the 2-year program. I would also like to know how many seats are available. Thank you.

Hi Everyone! Just letting you know there is a new Facebook group that was created, "Stony Brook University School of Nursing Class of 2014". It's a private group. Join if you were accepted! :)
