Stony Brook Basic BSN Fall 2012

U.S.A. New York

Published

Hello everyone!

I applied to Stony Brook's Basic (2-year) BSN program 3 weeks a go and thought it may be helpful to start up a forum.

If you are:

currently applying or plan on applying, a former applicant, a current SBU student, I'd love to hear from you!

Has everyone finished their perquisites? Does anyone else have a not so competitive GPA (like me)? Does anyone know who is considered a competitive applicant? Where is everyone else applying?

I look forward to speaking with everyone and hopefully entering the Fall '12 class together!

Prospective, I was placed as an alternate in the one year program, but i was accepted to the two year.

I have my first degree from Ithaca college and i have a 3.6 in Business communications. I have a 4.0 in all my prerqs that i took at suffolk community college. my Refrences were from my Volunteer Supervisor in the ER, My mentor who was a wound care nurse and in nursing admin in cali, and someone that i worked closely with in social work. I held nothing back in my personal statement, it really helps for the admission process and for you to sit for a min and determine exactly why u want to be a nurse and then just pour it out on the page. I talked about how i went from communications to finding out that i wanted to be a nurse. i talked alot about my experiences in the ER. I think this helped alot because it showed that i was putting my passion into action(you could walk the walk so to speak.) and i talked about my personal experience with my grandfather. i agree personal statement and references speak volumes. grades certainly help but that is not all they are looking for.

Alot of us wrote out our backgrounds at the beginning of this blog. there is also a blog called stony brook 2013 that has alot of info. i read throught them all trying to get the best idea possible on how to go about the applciation process. Good luck to you!

Thanks kaywal17 for the reply. It really gives me an idea of what they're looking for. Congrats on getting accepted to the 2 yr and good luck!

hey everyone . firstable congrat who got into program this year.. to read this forum its really make me excited since i almost read all of the comment on this page .. I am going to apply for next year , I need some advice from you guys . it would be great if you put your idea for me .

I am an immigrant from Turkey and moved 4 yr ago here . I had Bachelor degree on BA and also I have associate degree on Accounting, compare to bachelor my assct degree GPA higher . AS degree 3.1 gpa from turkey btw.. ( they will recognize I asked )

So I am thinking to apply 2 year nursing prg instead of applying to ABSN. So by that way i just would shw them my AS degree plus i am taking all pre req in USA and getting A and A- all of them so far.

So i dont know if im on right way ? thinking If apply ABSN w bachelor degree whic cumaltive 2.8gpa would be less change to get in . so best idea is i think just say have AS degree and apply 2 yr prog..

If anyone comment their idea id be so happy..

thanks

Ozgur- apply to both programs

Hello Ozgur,

I am Turkish also. I got accepted into 2 year program. I am going to start this fall. I have been living here for three years. I took all of my pre reqs from a community college. I had a 3.9 overall GPA. I could not finish my bachelors degree in Turkey. I took some classes and my GPA was not that high, as you know the education system in Turkey is different! I decided to take all the required classes over here. And I did not send my transcript to the school. You may apply to both 2 year and accelerated program. To me ,GPA is important but the essay and the reference letters are more important. You make difference with your essay and reference letters.

Have you gotten the required information for both programs?

If you have any questions, I will be happy to answer.

HEADS UP for Basic BSN class starting Fall 2012: Starting this fall, new BSN students will be taking Pharmacology during their first year, not during the 2nd year as previously offered. The course will start in early Nov and run through mid-April of the spring semester. Just found this out yesterday, thought I'd share.

I'm a recent grad of the accelerated program for those that don't know me, good luck! :D

Thank you Paco!

Thanks paco!!! Isn't there another class as well that starts late in the semester

Yes, pathology starts the same week (that class however is a joke compared to pharm :p ... BTW, don't buy the textbook for path, at all! You will never read it. The profs who teach path post EXCELLENT notes and PPTs for each lecture on Blackboard and even provide you last year's exams for practice ... actually, they will be the same ones I took, lol ... fairly easy A if you study it all, the exams are based on those notes). Half the class will stop attending the lectures starting the 2nd week, most people just show up for the tests (3 of them). I however am a good student and went to all the classes ... but only because pharm lectures followed thereafter :D

Thanks!! Pharm is the class I'm most nervous about..I was going to take that 2 credit course over winter break but now that pharm is added maybe I'll wait until summer

What 2 credit course is that? There really is no real winter break for nursing students (at least during the 1st year). Don't know exact dates this year, but roughly Dec 15 to Jan 3 is your time off from school. Although for the better part of January you're only taking path and pharm (the spring semester and the rest of your courses for that semester begin around Jan 23 or so -- check the academic calendar).

Oh, there is a huge HEADS UP I need to let you know: this past year, the pharm prof scheduled our 1st pharm exam on the 1st day back in January (that would be @ Jan 3 or whatever it is in 2013). This exam covered all the material presented from 1st class in Nov until mid Dec when the semester ends. Yes, that means you will spend your holidays studying for that first exam. Sorry for bearing the bad news, there is no way around it. Good however to know if you were planning that whirlwind trip to the Bahamas, you might want to delay those plans for a year. This is not to say you will study nonstop during your time off (then again, it may -- depending on how much you slack off during the lectures and Nov-Dec). If you do it right, you can find a good balance. It's just a shame that you won't be able to have a completely free and clear head during your break (something I really enjoy having, a clear head during vacations).

Might I add however, the sacrifices are worth it in the end :)

Someone told me you have to do a 2 credit online elective or something either during a winter break or summer?

That must be a 2-year thing i am not familiar with.
