That 2 credit elective you are talking about for the 2 year BSN students can be done many ways. The first winter period they offer some clinical like classes, but the senior's usually gobble them up. They there are things like an end of life course or directed studies (read a book write a paper type class) etc. This summer they had the SBUH Internship which is a paid gig but you pay for 2 credits so you knock it out while working (have to apply and be selected for this. I just to a Complementary/Alternative Treatment class this summer, it was one day in class (mostly demos), read a little, take a quiz, and final, pretty easy, there are others like this too.

Pretty competitive, the standard 2 year is about 6 or 7 hundred applicants for about 60+- spots, I think the accelerated is fewer applicants but still very competitive ( I am not 100% sure if there are fewer applicants I have not heard that from any official source). GPA is importand but so is the letters of recommendation and personal essay. I would suggest you review the saga of the last group to go through this process and there are many great informational posts. If you look as some of the last posts, you will see some great information from PACO69, he just finished the accelerated program, I am halfway through the 2 year. Awesome school, great staff, and the hospital is an indoor walk away so your clinical prof's are nearby in many cases for questions and advice. If it fits you situation think about applying for both programs. I will post on both blogs so that you can find them. Good luck.

In general you do one day 0700 to 1500 or so at University Hospital. The majority of folks go on Thursday but there are a few other options like 12 hour weekend tours etc. Depends on the clinical professors and what hours they want to do.

I used a place in Smithtown as they offered the BLS for Healthcare Providers class several times per month so it worked with my crazy schedule, here is the link. I forgot the price, in the neighborhoos of 70 bucks or so. The instructor did a nice job and if you just need a refresher you join the class a little later as you don't need the intro portion. I am the last person to ask about clothing options (wore a uniform for 28 years). I think you can wear white pants from anywhere they tell you they have to be nursining pants. They say something about wearing white nursing shoes, they discuss this the first day or two during orientations. I have to be honest the mens pants in the bookstore were pretty good and not over priced, had nice side pockets and most importantly a ZIPPER (guys you know what I mean). I think they were Landau brand or something like that. Ladies pants in the book store were similar by I don't think they had those great tactical pockets (I loveeeee pockets). Get a decent stethoscope, most sounds beyond BP are a little hard to hear especially for an old fart like me, so it is worth getting a middle of the road stethoscope, but don't go crazy as this will also make a great graduation gift.... I think the LIttman Lightweight was a pretty popular model and its in the 50 buck range. You will have time to get your stuff after class starts so dont go nuts yet, work on your med forms and CPR for Healthcare provider tasks first!

Yes there are a few clinical options for that first semester, then again for the third (not as much choice on your part during that 3rd sem though). For this fall though, you can choose for example, Thur. 8 hour, Weekend 10 and 12 hour, etc. It sort of depends on what that particular clinical Profs wants to do. I did Thur 8 hour, 7x3 and liked it. The 12 hour folks got their hours done quicker, but I really love the first semester clinical and being around during the weekdays gave me a better understanding of how all the support services in SBU Hospital work. I am an old fart and working full time so I appreciated not having to do a 12 right now especially when I did not want to sit if possible, and kept moving the whole time, but it is what you like. The majority of slots are 8 hours. I hope you all have as good an experience as I did that first semester! By the way the whole crew of professors that work that massive 10 credit fundamentals course are outstanding. If you have any problems at all they are their for you. No kidding! Also my advice is to take a "Can Do" attitude. What ever nurse you are assigned to for the day... be willing to take care of everything you can! This makes them appreciate having you, and even offering to mentor you again another day. Don't hang out at the nurses station, although it is tempting to chat with classmates keep it to the minimum. It will be noticed. Remember every person there is someone's family member and what you would expect of those providing care to them and you will do great. Even that grumpy person likely has a lot of "Stuff" going on and could use a little extra time and attention and this is one time in your career when that is just what you have to give! It is a weird feeling walking into a patients room and introducing yourself, just bust through it and it gets easier every time. You will have a million questions but the extra help you offer a busy nurse gets paid back when you start rattling off those question, so it is a symbiotic relationship. Of course we can't admit it to our classmates, but odds are you are going to love the first semester! That is after you figure out where the bathrooms, snackbar (easy one) and hospital carfeteria are. And what the heck is a Galleria??? Best of luck all, Now get out and work on that tan!!!! Your first day they will have you go to a lecture hall and will be briefed all day, get id's, and get a ton of information thrown at you. The first couple weeks there are a million little things to do. You will be given your schedule for both years (I get pleasure out of crossing off courses as the move into my rearview mirror). Likely you will have Medical Math, 2 cr, Health Assessment, 4 cr, Fundamental of Nursing 10 Cr (includes your clinical and lab time) and perspectives of nursing 2 cr (sort of like a history of nursing theorists). You don't have to regiester before hand because for some of the classes, like fundamentals you will have to have a clincial group to sign up for first and that takes a day or two for them to figure out. You will all go through together so don't worry about not getting into a class, you can't fail to get a spot in the standard classes (winter/summer electives, are different you have to get into them, it is a 2 cr elective you have to take sometime during the program and nothing you took in the past will be given credit as this elective). The only folks that I think reg for a sort of phony class to show they are taking credits are the folks that need to I believe for financial aid status, you would have to check with administration about that if it is not in your information email or packet. Also make sure to take care of the medical forms and BLS for healthcare providers CPR course. The program is tough but doable, just try and keep up with the work as there are several presentations, care plans, papers etc, and they have a way of sneaking up on you. You worked hard to get here so you are all not afraid of work, therefore you are going to love it (most of the time). Best of luck, see you in August, Buckeroo out!

The titres are to see if you have immunity to certain diseases, like measles, mumps, etc. If you don't have proof of innoculations (when I got mine pencil and paper had not been invented yet and it was too much trouble for the doctor to write the immunization record on the cave wall) you will have to get titres of antibodies from a blood sample. Not a big deal but SBU is VERY specific of what they want. All the links for forms and instructions will be sent to you, I would suggest getting it done early in the summer, before you know it you will be starting.

Folks, in case you didn't see it, Paco put a fantastic summary of classes/text/ and many other issues to guide your decisions under the accelerated class of 2013 blog it is right on the money!!! Paco awesome effort, I concur. Also make sure you start working on getting all those medicals/ titres/ CPR for Healthcare requirements etc done early. Then you can enjoy a little bit of summer I hope, for you loooooong wait, I think you deserved it. Good luck all and again to anyone on a waiting list, they take attendence on the first day and if someone does not show they are on the phones telling people to get there now! I know someone who is graduating now that got that call on the first day of class. Also good idea to get there early that first day. If you have never visited the school, your first day you can't get in the parking lot near the SoN so you have to park in the paid lot by the hospital and enter the hospital and get over three building while staying indoors. It is a crazy layout and I would suggest dropping off your completed packet of stuff one day in summer and making it an excuse to find the place. (bring food, tent, compass and breadcrumbs to mark a trail) It is a crazy building and the escalator construction really messes things up. After two weeks I was able to find the bathroom on a consistant basis and considered that one of my top ten life accomplishments (and I have been around a while).
