Stony Brook School of Nursing has recently opened the undergraduate application portal for the 2021 school year. I was part of an allnurses thread for their Basic BSN program last year, and the information and support from other applicants was amazing; so I jumped on creating a thread for this cycle as soon as applications became available.
Any questions or even just casual discussion about the program is more than welcome! Can’t wait to talk to all of you. ?
The vibe I got from past threads is that it is competitive and a good portion of applicants have gpas well above the 2.8 minimum, but it seems like the school does give applicants a lot of space to further show why they would be a good fit for the program (e.g. at least 3 recommendation letters, 3 paged double-space essay), but maybe this is just a way to further weed out applicants? (IDK, I guess it depends on how you look at it))Since, at this point, you don't have too much control over your GPA I think you should still go ahead and apply and put your best foot forward by doing your best on the parts of the application you have more control over. Honestly, I do not think anyone can truly give you an idea of your chances. It's all based on what the admissions committee thinks of your application and, even then, there are so many other variables at play that are out of your control. Like yeah past threads indicate that a lot of applicants have >3.2, but not all applicants post on allnurses, so there's that. Furthermore, on a past year thread I saw someone with a 3.8 GPA get waitlisted and then rejected, which indicates that it's not just GPA. Also, you said you have direct patient care experience and that is a strength. Also, applying to more programs will help too. Just focus on what's in your control.

I am a bit concern because my overall uGPA is low but I had 5/7 prerequisites done with all As and plenty of direct care experience. Gonna try to write a killer essay and my recommendations are probably pretty OK even though I never read them ( I just trust my professors)
What are my chances? ? I think the only thing I am lacking is my overall GPA ?
From what I’ve been told my Nursing Admissions, the criteria/average accepted students changes each year because it depends on the pool of applicants for that year. And it seems like they look at the applicant overall, so try to stay positive!

Thanks everyone!! And is it true the new dean look at it more holistically than the old dean? Also, around how many people apply each year if you guys know?

Whenever I asked they didn’t give me any numbers but they said “we receive hundreds of applicants every year”. So they receive a significant number of applications vs seats available.

Also, I’m not sure what your situation is in regard to time, but the basic BSN 2 year program is also an option. That app deadline is early January 2021 and they accept applicants who already have a bachelors. I’m considering applying to that one as well, especially since courses are taken over a longer period of time without becoming another 4 years of undergrad.

yes, I applied to both to max out my chances!! I still prefer the accelerated 1 year since it's faster and I will probably be less awkward since I don't have to be in a class full of younger students haha

Does anyone know the timeline for the ABSN and BSN programs? Like when they reach out to us for the interview and when we find out if we got in? I'm wondering because I'm also applying to Farmingdale and NCCC. Their programs start in Spring 2021.

In the last few years for the ABSN program, interview decisions came about a week after Columbus Day weekend. And last year, they didn’t start sending out decisions until late January-early February, so it’s pretty late by the time they get back to us! I’m not sure about the regular BSN though.

Oh jeeze! That seems to be cutting it close to the start of Spring programs at other schools. That worries me. SBU is my #1 choice, but I obviously don't want to put all my eggs in one basket.. hence why I'm applying to other schools too. Gah!

That’s my biggest issue too! I’m applying to other programs and am already so stressed out about acceptances/the time we get accepted. I’m nervous I’m gonna accept a seat at another school and get an acceptance to SBU at the beginning of the Spring semester in a different school. The only thing I’m telling myself is obviously we’ll know we won’t even be considered if we never get invited to an interview.
