Stony Brook ABSN Class of 2022

Published

Stony Brook School of Nursing has recently opened the undergraduate application portal for the 2021 school year. I was part of an allnurses thread for their Basic BSN program last year, and the information and support from other applicants was amazing; so I jumped on creating a thread for this cycle as soon as applications became available.

Any questions or even just casual discussion about the program is more than welcome! Can’t wait to talk to all of you. ?

What month do decisions come out?

Last year applicants didn’t start hearing back until late-January, early-February:/

well when I emailed Pamela she told me "  The applications are reviewed and after the deadline we choose a large pool of candidates to interview. "
I hope that means majority ? now I am nervous because of my GPA

I know Stony Brook’s ABSN programs gets A LOT of applications, like wayy more than available seats. That’s why they do the group interview thing normally because they don’t have time to individually interview applicants. So I’m not sure what their definition of “large pool” is. From what I’ve heard from applicants in the last few years and a family friend who graduated from the program, they automatically weed out low gpas and don’t even look at them, which I find really annoying since their minimum GPA is 2.8 but they won’t even look at those applicants.

Does she know how many people apply each year and how many spots they have?

I’ve asked multiple times but they don’t seem to be allowed to say any numbers in terms on how many people apply. They’ve always said something along the lines of “We receive a significantly higher number of applications every year, compared to available seats”.

@meg n

Thank you so much! That is what I thought but I wanted to make sure LOL.

Does anyone know how many clinical hours the program has? I emailed them that question awhile back but never got a response.

Don’t lose hope, you never know! Every year there’s a new pool of applicants with different stats, so it’ll all depend on the types of applicants that apply this year within our pool.

What are everyone’s stats btw?
Here’s mine:

Cum GPA: 3.30

Pre-req GPA: 3.70

English Comp: A

Microbiology: A

Anatomy: A

Chemistry: B-

Lifespan Development: A

Experience: Nursing Assistant in an ICU, Patient Care Technician in the Float Pool, Certified EKG Technician, Telemetry Monitor Technician, 50+ hours shadowing RNs and Nurse Practitioners, TA for Introductory Psychology at The University at Buffalo, Research Assistant at The Univeristy at Buffalo’s Nutrition and Exercise Science Department, Peer Mentor for Freshman students, Studied Abroad in the UK and volunteered at a local hospital there, and a Member of the Delta Phi Epsilon sorority where I held leadership positions on the Standards Board and Risk Management Team!

@meg n

No way! OMG! We are nearly the same, how weird! Though my study abroad was in New Zealand LOL

Dude, no way!! I actually almost went to New Zealand but last minute decided on the UK because I have family there so I knew that would help with my transition! It honestly ended up being the best decision ever because I felt incredibly homesick at the beginning before I started making friends and it was nice to just take the train and go spend the weekend with my family if I felt too sad by myself.

Does anyone know for Stony Brook if they place more importance on cGPA rather than sGPA or other way around?
