I have an older pt with m.d., he takes Miralax for his bowels...but it makes everything sooooooooooooooo...sticky!!!! It would be bad enough to clean off a cute baby tush.....but this an adult hairy bottom. I end up using a lot of wipes and t.p. (family/pt. doesn't want wash cloth and soap used) any handy tips to make this clean up easier???
just wondering, why did you say in your first post that he was an "older" patient, then say he was 20 years old? I'm confused.. i was picturing and old man butt the whole thread. haha. maybe you do peds and this is considered an older patient for you?sorry just curious.
I just saw the m.d......muscular dystrophy... :smackingf Now it makes more sense :) I was thinking wrinkly old prune butt. Sorta wondered why the hair was still clinging to life back there..... a 20 y/o- that makes sense
I don't understand why the family is against using washcloths and soap, it's a 20 year old butt!!! If it was me I would educate the family on the benefit of using the washcloth instead of wipes that can leave residue which can then cause sores and irritation. Unless this young man is really frail I would consider inquiring with the family on their reasons. You could mention that the patient would also feel better with a good soapy wash than with a wipe down. Another thought, if it is a sore butt that is their concern, consider the times you have to wipe with either method. The washcloth would get the job done faster and with less strokes. Just my 2 cents.

And, the microfiber ones (I've gotten them at Dollar Tree) are really soft, and easy to wash... a lump of OxyClean in with the regular soap fixes a LOT of stuff....(haven't tested out sticky poo, but some of my cooking is just a poop chute away).
Maybe it's the whole reusable thing....there are also fairly inexpensive larger dry wipes that can be used with any cleaner.
See if you can convince the family to invest in some washcloths specifically for peri-care. They can come from a thrift or dollar store they don't need to be fancy for butt wiping.
Sometimes I will use a wipe like a washcloth as well. Rinse out the smelly stay on cleanser and use them with soap and water.
a&d ointment. it's a petroleum jelly base, so it meets the criteria for slippery and non-drying, plus the vit a and vit d keep the skin in good shape. i got such great results using this on my babies' butts i started using it at work (nursing plan of care, no md prescription needed). never had to scrub hard again.

Shaving a butt would not cause bed sores. Bed sores are caused by pressure- not alopecia :) It could be an issue with ingrown hairs or razor 'skid' marks/razor burn....but bedsores- not likely at all :)
