I have a Littman Classic that I got when I started Nsg School in 1987. It still works but I retired it in favour of another Littman a few years back. Still in great shape, I just decided it had served me well and was due to retire. (I took it a number of years back to get new earpieces and the lady at the medical bookstore looked at it and said "Oh my, they don't even make that colour anymore! You have had this a while!!") We have the ones supplied my the hospital (one of the doctors I work with calls them the Fisher-Price stethoscopes) in the clinic but I hate them and will not use them. I have always used Littman and don't think I would ever get anything else.

I've owned a Littman Classic S.E. II for a few years. It's been used for when I used to volunteer, went on international medical trip, and for work as an ER Tech so I'm confident it'll serve me well I nursing school when I start this Fall.

I have a littman lightweight s.e II but I can't hear out of it well with heavy set people-- should I upgrade to a cardio? I want to be able to hear well.

My cousin bought this for me. It's the Lola Advance Assessment Stethoscope, he got it for me as an early pre nursing school present.

Well, I received mine in the mail today and the tube seems bigger and shorter than most. It's an allheart cardio in stealth black. I know NOTHING about stethoscopes! I tried listening to my husbands heartbeat and I could barely hear it! I'm wondering if I made a good choice for school or if I should send it back and get a better one?

Priss-check out the instructions before sending it back...a common problem that most newbies encounter is that they don't have it 'put in their ears right'...sounds silly, but it happens!
Also, is your set on bell or diaphragm? I know that is probably foreign to you, so check out the small brochure it came with :)

i just got a littman classic s.e. ii with the rainbow finish chest piece. it is awesome! my previous stethoscope was a cheap prestige brand from the college bookstore that came with a blood pressure cuff. i agree with previous poster, make sure you are putting it in your ears the right way! i never knew that until i was reading my littman instructions. the ear things curve forward for a reason! my prestige brand did not. also, make sure you have twisted to the tube at the bottom so it is either set to bell or diaphragm. after i put the things in my ear, but before i put the chest piece on someone to listen for sounds, i always tap the diaphragm to make sure i hear something. if i don't hear something then i know that it has been knocked out of place. yep, i learned that from experience, lol!

As a parting gift from my employer, I was given a Littman Cardio iii. I love it!
One more thing, just b/c you may not hear anything well with your scope doesn't necessarily mean it's not a good one...there are anatomical landmarks that you will be taught as to where to hold your steth to hear the different valves of the heart.
