Stethoscope/clinical supplies

Published

Hello fellow nursing students and nurses!

Just wondering what kind of stethoscope did u buy or plan to buy for nursing school?

When I went to school for medical assisting, I used the cheap one the school provided from prestige medical. It was very heavy and I thought the sound quality was ok....until I purchased the littman lightweight! Omg the difference there is very noticeable. Can't believe I went so long without a littman. The sound quality is very impeccable, and let's not forget the weight of it. Much better than having that heavy, double tubing one hang around my neck all day.

I'd say I made a very good choice in getting the littman. Also I was able to get it in my favorite color (lilac/light purple), I love every shade of purple and was also able to have my first and last name engraved on it.

What kind of stethoscope/ clinical supplies did you guys use or plan on using?

I'm considering buying this magnetic lanyard designed in use for bass fishing to connect my BIC 4-color pen to my nametag.

It's like breakaway pants for your pen.

(Wha-bam!)

Good idea, bad idea?

I got a Littmann Cardiology III, the all black edition. I also got a cheap BP cuff that came with one of those cheap double-tubed scopes. That thing weighed a ton. I kept that in my clinical bag in case someone forgot theirs I'd lend them that one. I've prevented a couple people from getting sent home for being unprepared and marked absent and losing points with that ugly purple thing ;)

I let someone from my clinical group borrow my ugly purple double-tube stetho and she is *still* using it about 9 weeks later.... Good thing I have no intention of using it, unless someone makes off with my Littmann.

I hate carrying mine in my pocket, though, it's so awkward. Is there any other way to carry a stethoscope??

You might want to read the rest of this thread before asking a question that we've already discussed. We've mentioned several ways.

The trick is to carry it out of there like you OWN it....

... we had a patient once who took the mattress.

Not a joke.

Not sure how it happened, but... it did. I guess that's the peril of working in a county, safety net hospital. LOL.

Whoops, sorry about that. I had read the rest of the thread but for some reason I was imagining a holster as a pocket accessory. Checked out the links, seems like a good idea! Thanks for the reminder to go back and look.

I bought the littman light in lilac last night :)

I had a Littman Lightweight in school, and I liked it, but it walked off shortly after my new grad year (and I know who helped it walk, but sometimes maintaining harmony on the unit is worth the price of a new stethoscope- lesson learned, DO mark your stethoscope).

I replaced it with an Ultrascope and I love it. It's great for the ED environment- much easier to hear subtle sounds when there's a lot of ambient noise and surprisingly good sound quality even when you can't get down to skin level, like in triage. And it comes in dozens of different colors and painted designs under the clear lucite head, plus engraving, and they're really pretty in person- I've had it for years and patients and other staff still compliment me on it at least once a shift, and nobody can walk away with it claiming they mistook it for theirs. Mine has kind of a shimmery design on the head, and peds patients are fascinated with it- great for distraction and calming during procedures, and very friendly and un-clinical looking. I'll never go back!

Yes! I nearly failed my validation a due to not hearing well. Get a littman with the proper sized tips and you will hear soooo much easier.

Totally true! A good stethoscope with a good fit is crucial!! I have Tragus piercings and I used to not be able to hear anything!! I didn't understand!! I removed my earrings and I could hear clear as a bell!!

Just a tip for others....flat backed earrings for my Tragus work very well for not impeding hearing!!

I got the Littman Classic III copper edition because it was an unpopular color amongst my coworkers (brown tubing), so it's easily recognizable as mine.

Right!!! Because I worked with a bunch of awesome nurses, my stethescope with built in name tag, was returned to me. But if it hadn't Been, the fact that I customized my littman would have made it instantly recognizable! Gold tubing, without a rainbow colored bell means it's mine!!

OMG now I want one. I went through nursing school with an Adscope, which did its job but as a grad gift for myself I bought a Littman, and the difference amazing. But the lack of variety in colors makes me worried mine will walk away too.
