Hello fellow nursing students and nurses!
Just wondering what kind of stethoscope did u buy or plan to buy for nursing school?
When I went to school for medical assisting, I used the cheap one the school provided from prestige medical. It was very heavy and I thought the sound quality was ok....until I purchased the littman lightweight! Omg the difference there is very noticeable. Can't believe I went so long without a littman. The sound quality is very impeccable, and let's not forget the weight of it. Much better than having that heavy, double tubing one hang around my neck all day.
I'd say I made a very good choice in getting the littman. Also I was able to get it in my favorite color (lilac/light purple), I love every shade of purple and was also able to have my first and last name engraved on it.
What kind of stethoscope/ clinical supplies did you guys use or plan on using?
Im not in school anymore. I don't have my own stethoscope for work. Each patient has their own. Most of them are Littman's. Some are not (I'm not sure what they are), but I don't really hear any difference.
Charging $1000 for stethoscope under miscellaneous fees is a good trick. / just kidding.
I know Littmann is thee name, but I got an mdf deluxe duel head stethoscope and BP cuff for less than half the price of Littmann light put together. The mdf steth got great reviews. For school I need to save everywhere so I'm happy with it. I have used someone's Littmann light and my ears are untrained yet but I could hear equally.
I saw this thread near the top, so I thought I'd write a better review now that I received my correctly calibrated bp cuff. The thing with the mdf stethoscope is that I could hear the heart as clear as a Littmann lightweight, and it's nice and loud, including over a shirt, but the ear pieces don't fit in the ears snuggly. If you ever had earplugs that are loose vs tight you know how the sound difference is.
Anyway I went around taking everyone's bp. Thanks for the tips about not wearing the steth around your neck.
I was with you until #3. I cannot use a fine point pen---I push HARD when I write, like you can read it like braille from the backside! I have to have at least a medium point, right now I'm loving the papermate profile. I buy em' at Target or Walmart in the multi-color packs. I color code on my cheat sheets, that's my organizational style =)
1. Littmann Lightweight II SE in school and now have Cardiology III. Fits well in the scrub pants side pocket.2. digital watch (less than $20) with velcro straps showing large numbers both date and time in 24 hour mode as I work overnight.
3. uniball 207 retractable fine point pens. purchase by the dozen pack
I should have said the stethoscopes come with the room. We clean and reuse them when pts leave and new ones are admitted. That means we only charge $900. LolI do love not needing one though..
Couldn't resist... Carrying around less is good.
Each patient get's their own bed, but they don't take it home with them.

... we had a patient once who took the mattress.
Not a joke.
Not sure how it happened, but... it did. I guess that's the peril of working in a county, safety net hospital. LOL.

I've had a littman classic II since nursing school (2012). I do not wear mine around my neck (only for my morning assessments and then PRN) but it serves it's purpose well and I don't see getting a new one any time soon! Love it! I also tied a ribbon around the tubing so I can distinguish it from my co-workers :)
