Stealing stethescopes

Published

I am about to start Nursing School! Yaayyy! I will be crossing over to this forum in no time I hope! I was just wondering what color stethescope is most common...or which one you think I should get..I about to order my very first stethescope..this expensive littmann one...I hear stethescopes get stolen often so I want one that stands out from everyone else's...it might be harder for them to steal it then. I am not about to spend $80 to just get it stolen. There is like a list of 20 to pick from..all the littmann classic colors I guess.

and if you have any tips or pointers for starting NS I would appreciate it. How do I get on the clinical nurses good sides. Scared after reading (why nurses eat their young.' Please don't eat me!! Haha:D I just want to learn and do a good job.

Of course we eat our young. Have you taken a look at what they serve in the cafeteria?

Things only walk away if you leave them unattended. Keep it with you at all times and you won't have a problem. I personally don't like it around my neck so I purchased an awesome steth clip for my waist band.

I would NEVER buy a scope. It will be lost, stolen, or" mis-appropriated".

Most hospitals have adequate scopes, available from central supply.

I can hear just fine with these hospital issued devices.

If u cant get one from the hospital, keep the least expensive one u can find on your person at all times. Best of luck in school. U will run across all types of nurses, again, most facilities now ask for feedback from students as to how the staff is treating them, don't be afraid to name names, both positive and negative feedback is appreciated.

I will be starting Nursing School & I have a Littman Cardiology Master in burgandy with my name engraved on it.

1. Don't get a black one.

2. Don't ever set it down on a random counter.

3. Remember who you borrow it to.

I have a littman cardiology three and don't have any complaints about it.

Another trick to employ if someone insists on borrowing your stethoscope, is to let them borrow it in exchange for their car keys. When they give you back your scope, you give them back their car keys.

Thank you everyone!! I decided the get the raspberry colored one..and I would get a cheaper one but we have to order it from our nursing school as they are donating 15% to NSNA...also I really appreciate the advice on getting along with nurses during clinicals.

Are you referring to those cheap $1 scopes? If you can hear well with them then kudos to you! I can hear basic sounds, but for the more subtle things I find them useless. Perhaps its also due to my time spent around those loud sirens and airhorns :uhoh3:

Yeah, but what if they sit it down and it is stolen or they just lose it? You going to drive off in their car at end of shift?

I have a Littman Electronic 3000 (green) which I love. It stays around my neck or in my car. Nowhere else.

I never, ever lend it out either.

I have yet to have someone misplace my steth when I employ this trick, people are much more careful about giving it back when you have their keys.

The person who taught me this trick once had a doc borrow her stethoscope in exchange for his keys, he then proceeded to take off with it, went to different floors with it, left it in room, and then a few hours later clocked out, got to his car and... no keys. She made him go retrace his steps until he found it and brought it back to her.
