I was having a conversation with my sister-n-law who graduated in May 2004 from UMC. She told me that she talked to some of her friends who graduated this year and they were getting jobs that only started you off with 16.50! I asked her shouldn't it be around 19.00? She said that is with shift differential included and that 16.50 is the base. This is the same woman who told my husband when she graduated that she started off with 19.00 an hour back in 2004 (and she works in a renal clinic, i.e. no overnights).
Is it just me or is this somewhat low for the Jackson Metro Area? I think my cousin, who just graduated as a Respiratory Therapist will start off with somewhere around that. Are the salaries that much similar. I mean that is only a 2 year degree. I have another friend who knows someone making 20.00 an hour as a Respiratory Therapist, which she's probably not a new grad though.
Does anyone know if this is the norm? (16.50 an hour for a new RN grad in Jackson Metro area)
More like 700-1100 now. You may be able to find a place for 500.00 now, but it will most likely be in the ghetto and I don't think anyone who could afford it would want to live in those areas.
yeah, that is the states general avg. I live right by Memphis and a small house in a decent neighborhood is going to run you 1300 a month...a decent size house is almost 2000. But if you go about 45 miles south you can buy the same thing on some acreage for considerably less, usually about half as much. But there are no community by-laws and covenants, no city water or sewer, and you would have to drive an hr to an hr and a half to get to work. Its really a no win situation.
You've got to be kidding....and they only want to start RNs off with 16.50??? Ridiculous! St Dom is the same starting pay rate as well and from what I've heard UMC is the same way. A student at another school said that there was a rumor going around that UMC is about to increase their base pay and if UMC does all the other area hospitals will follow suit. Let's keep our fingers crossed.:wink2:
i don't live in that area, i live much further north. Our techs make 16 base and new grads start out at 19-22 depending on facility.
Did you know that St. Dominic's doesn't hire agency nurses or lpns. This was told to me by the nurse recruiter there.
hmmmm...is there a surplus of nurses down there? I am just curious because of the low wage and not using agency/LPNs. We are soooo shorthanded, a little less than half our nurses are LPNs and the use of agency/travel nurses are common to keep pt ratios safe. We have to use them because if we didnt we would not be able to effectively take care of our clients. Pay for nursing staff is quite competitive among various facilities in our area with some great retention incentives.
I recently visited several hospitals in NW Florida (where the cost of living is MUCH higher than central Miss.) Here is what I found:
West Florida Regional Med. Ctr. $16.50
Baptist Hospital $16.50
Sacred Heart Hospital $16.50
North Okaloosa County Medical $16.00
I think I will stay in Central Alabama where the starting is around $20.00 avg.
It's true!
Had a career fair at my school yesterday...
St Dom, Baptist-Jackson and CCMC all start new grads out at $16.50/h plus shift diff. Some have special pay for ACLS (I know St Dom offers $1.00 extra). CCMC has a $8,000 signing bonus for a 2 year commitment, too (but I've heard terrible things about their staffing/ratios from a girl who externed there last year). I have no idea about UMC.
NMMC-Tupelo is offering $19.00/h plus shift diff. Baptist Golden Triangle is offering $19.55/h plus shift diff.
I'm going to check with Rush and Anderson in Meridian soon, but a classmate told me they are in the $16.50-ish range, too.

just wondering if hospitals there in MS give sign-on bonus to new grads?
oh yea, wanna ask some questions. Do you still need to have an agency to apply for a job there? or can just walk in to the Hr and submit resume? any tips for applying jobs there..thank you soo much. am graduating this march.. God bless!
I am the most suprised at how close the wages are for cna's vs nurses that you are talking about. Up here in oregon RN's start at about $25/hour, I worked at my same hospital as a cna and made 15.50 base pay in the float pool with no benefits, plus shift differential. But my base pay as an RN BSN is $25.79, with a six dollar differential for nights. My point is I make at least ten dollars more per hour as an rn, some of you were saying it was barely a couple of dollars more. That is very suprising!

Sign on bonuses seem to be the trend only if the hospital is having horrible trouble with staffing, in which case you may find a poor work environment after locking yourself into a committment. Other benefits are widely available like tuition reimbursement and assistance, paid NCLEX review courses, extensive intern/orientee training programs, retention and recruiting bonuses, pension plans, etc. that must be considered as well. I can't speak for the gulf coast or middle region but for North MS, there are no sign on bonuses currently being offered. Pay starts around 19-22/hr plus $4-6 shift diff. You apply with HR and most hospitals are trying to get away from using agency nurses.
