16.50 Starting Wage for a Grad Nurse???? Oh No! Say it Ain't So.....

Published

I was having a conversation with my sister-n-law who graduated in May 2004 from UMC. She told me that she talked to some of her friends who graduated this year and they were getting jobs that only started you off with 16.50! I asked her shouldn't it be around 19.00? She said that is with shift differential included and that 16.50 is the base. This is the same woman who told my husband when she graduated that she started off with 19.00 an hour back in 2004 (and she works in a renal clinic, i.e. no overnights).

Is it just me or is this somewhat low for the Jackson Metro Area? I think my cousin, who just graduated as a Respiratory Therapist will start off with somewhere around that. Are the salaries that much similar. I mean that is only a 2 year degree. I have another friend who knows someone making 20.00 an hour as a Respiratory Therapist, which she's probably not a new grad though.

Does anyone know if this is the norm? (16.50 an hour for a new RN grad in Jackson Metro area)

Whoa that is low! I would be mortified if someone told me that was all my education was worth. I started off as a new grad making 21 an hr in Alabama. I moved to MS with only 4 months experience and started at 21 an hr. This was in Wiggins MS. If you know where that it is, it is very rural. I live on the coast now and new grads start out at about 21-23 an hour. So I would surely check into a higher paying job you are worth it!

Specializes in Case mgmt., rehab, (CRRN), LTC & psych.

I cannot speak for Mississippi wages; however, I am a new and inexperienced LVN in Texas who earns $18 hourly with benefits and tuition reimbursement.

Wow, I'm just an MA in TX and I make 14 dollars an hr, with benefits. I sure as heck better make more than 16.50 when I finish nursing school!

Specializes in Acute/Chronic hemodialysis.

I graduated from JCJC in 2001 and started out making 14/hr. I worked 18 months at that wage before I got a 4 dollar/hr raise. Worked another year while going to USM for my BSN then decided to travel. I'm making twice that now. Kinda hard to go back to those low wages, but I know if I decide to go back home that is what I will have to settle for. It's a shame!

i can't believe the wages posted here...why would anyone work so hard to get through school and take on the responsibility that the nurses have to do and their time is valued so low

the pay scale in louisiana is higher than that . but we have more jobs than nurses here, that may be a factor

And to add to the poor wages, I'm having a heckuva time finding a job (May grad)! The hospital that I most wanted to work at hires on a "first come, first served" basis and they accidentally sent my application to the wrong facility (one of their smaller branches instead of the main unit).

Arizona New grad: $24 an hour plus $5-6 **** diff, sign on bonus $5k, $5250 yearly student loan repayment.

California New Grads $27-29/hour...

I think you should come out west! Why let them take advantage of you like that? $16.50? I made more than that as a nursing assistant in NY. I don't even get out of bed for $16.50. Tell 'em NO!:wink2:

Wow! that is pretty low, that is what the techs start out with and nurses start with $26.00 plus more for shift differential and sign on bonuses. We must be preety needy where I live or the cost of living is higher.

I am a new grad as of May 6... Interviewing with some hospitals in Jackson this week and next week. On the literature they have sent me, $16.50 an hour is base pay for a new grad at all of the big ones (St Dom, CCMC, UMC, Baptist, St Dom).

Pretty discouraging, isn't it?

I would think, with all the hospitals in the metro area, that it would drive wages up... not down. Most of the smaller hospitals in the smaller towns in the state have higher wages than the metro ones do! (I've heard $19-22 base for new grads at smaller hospitals or parts of north MS). Of course, those smaller hospitals lack the appeal of great orientations and specialty units, too. :(

I'd seriously consider moving out of state if all my family weren't here (we're very close) and if I didn't take the stupid IHL grant/scholarship that requires me to stay/work in MS x 2 years. :)

Chiynadol - I would imagine that the cost of living here is much less than in Philly. Things here are pretty cheap, compared to the NE! :)

Do any one know what the new grad pay is in greenville,nc????

I graduated 2006, when all the hospitals advertised $16.50, but there was a wage increase & now that I've worked for a year & get shift diff, I'm at almost $23.
