I was having a conversation with my sister-n-law who graduated in May 2004 from UMC. She told me that she talked to some of her friends who graduated this year and they were getting jobs that only started you off with 16.50! I asked her shouldn't it be around 19.00? She said that is with shift differential included and that 16.50 is the base. This is the same woman who told my husband when she graduated that she started off with 19.00 an hour back in 2004 (and she works in a renal clinic, i.e. no overnights).
Is it just me or is this somewhat low for the Jackson Metro Area? I think my cousin, who just graduated as a Respiratory Therapist will start off with somewhere around that. Are the salaries that much similar. I mean that is only a 2 year degree. I have another friend who knows someone making 20.00 an hour as a Respiratory Therapist, which she's probably not a new grad though.
Does anyone know if this is the norm? (16.50 an hour for a new RN grad in Jackson Metro area)
I live in NW mississippi and starting pay around here is 18-19/hr before night/wknd diff. Usually another 4-5dollars difference, plus if you extern at certain hospitals, they will pay you an extra $1 to stay on....but we are in stiff competition with TN to keep RNs in our facilities so the competition between facilities keeps pay up:balloons:
base for new grads is : 20.50 in mid-Texas.That's before shift diffs.
My shift diff is 1.00 evenings, 3.50 nights, 1.00 for sunday.
Ditto here in San Antonio.
If new nurses who KNOW a hospital needs RNs would wrinkle up their noses as $16.50/hr and remind the recruiter that is LOW for an RN (assuming it is BSN) - AND BE PREPARED to walk out and go somewhere else to get a higher paying RN job -
Rates would increase for that area.
Scary to do, but it works.
I was wondering what is the pay in hospital or nursing home for LPN's in NW jackson just curious. Because I am a LPN who lives in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and I work night shift for 23.00 base with 3.50 shift diff as a LPN in long term care.
I wouldn't be too quick to compare Wisconsin or Texas or Florida (or any other state with Mississippi) as we are considered one of the top "poorest" states of all 50. *Remember* the cost of living is quite low in most areas. So although an RN is making $17-20/hr usually, their house note is between $500-900/mo, sales tax is 7%, etc. etc. Just something to think about....
The Baptist Hospital visited our school a few weeks ago and the flyer they passed out to all the students listed 16.50 per hour to nursing graduates. They did have other ways listed to increase that such as float pool, weekend only and differentials, but the base starting rate was 16.50. Everyone was saying how low it was. Well, I know of one place I won't be working when I graduate.:stone
Is this in Jackson around the UofM...I heard that there pay is absolutely terrible and to steer clear of Baptist. My best friend works at Baptist as a nurse tech and makes 16.00 base pay plus differential for nights/weekends...and she still has a year before she graduates with ADN.

Certainly good in theory, but the hospitals just hire agency or travelers. Plus how many new RNs feel certain enough about what they are worth to really haggle...most are quite timid and I think the recruiters play off of this. The students are so eager to finally finish school that they can't wait to work and will take the low pay. I would simply move. The further north you go in MS, the higher the pay.
Also, there is no pay difference for ADN vs. BSN where I live. We all start out at the same rate, but after you get experience under your belt you need the BSN to move into promotional positions.

Well, add us here in SW Virginia to the *poor*.
I started at $16.00/hour three years ago as a brand new RN, and STILL haven't hit the $17.00/hour mark YET ! Probably this year after our annual "raise"...
Guess I'll be making $17.05 then. :stone Woohoooo.
But I do believe our HOSPITAL nurses start off more than that now, I hear somewhere around 19.00. They got a good increase last year, upped their base starting pay.
Our Dialysis mega company says it goes by the prevailing regional wages... well, they had better start looking around and catching UP, I say ! :angryfire

More like 700-1100 now. You may be able to find a place for 500.00 now, but it will most likely be in the ghetto and I don't think anyone who could afford it would want to live in those areas.

You've got to be kidding.... and they only want to start RNs off with 16.50??? Ridiculous! St Dom is the same starting pay rate as well and from what I've heard UMC is the same way. A student at another school said that there was a rumor going around that UMC is about to increase their base pay and if UMC does all the other area hospitals will follow suit. Let's keep our fingers crossed.:wink2:

When I first graduated in 2003, I started at $17.50 at NMMC in Tupelo even before I got my license. Within 6 mos, I got a $1 raise, so $16.50 is definitely low. I would have thought it would be much higher around Jackson!
