Stanford New Grad 2011 Residency

Nurses New Nurse

I graduated with a BSN in April 2010, got my RN in June, and am still patiently job-hunting (no interviews yet.) I got an email from my nursing school last week that said "Attention 2009 and 2010 grads! Stanford will start accepting applications for their March 2011 New Grad Residency soon."

I went to the Stanford residency application web page, and saw this as the first qualification:

"Must be a graduate from a BSN or master's level entry into practice program, accredited by National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), within 9 months prior to the Program's start date."

Maybe this is a really silly question, so I want to ask it here before I ask it of Stanford. If the program starts in March, then I didn't graduate within 9 months prior to the program start date. Are they really excluding all Spring 2010 grads or am I reading this wrong?

Thanks for any suggestions/clarification!

That's what it looks like. That's kinda messed up. I've never seen a requirement like that, I usually only see programs require that you graduated within 1 year. Looks like they're trying to shrink the applicant pool because they know they're going to get inundated. But still that's messed up to exclude qualified, already licensed Spring 2010 grads since there are tons of us out there who have been unable to find work the past several months. Grads in the bay area have especially had it tough with few opportunities there & I'm sure have been waiting for Stanford to post positions for their new grad program & now they can't even be considered. That sucks.

I graduated May 09 and this has been a regular thing for Stanford to have a narrow window. I got my BSN in Sept 10 and did not qualify the next time since my BSN graduation date was 1 week later then their requirement even though I was licensed.

Hello all,

I received a call today to schedule a pre-screening phone interview. Has anyone else received a call like this, or completed this interview yet? I was hoping you could share your experience and advice. From what I was told, this pre-screening interview is about 15-20 minutes long, and will consist of only 3 questions. These questions are non-clinical, non-behavioral questions. The person who called me described herself as a recruiter's assistant and told me the only information she could give me was "what they told me to say to you". She said the questions are very basic--for example, "What are your career goals for the next 5 years...".

Hope this was helpful & please share your thoughts =)

Vanessa,

I received the same call that you received and scheduled my phone interview for Thursday (meaning I should get to sleep since it's in 9 hours!)... The person I spoke to basically gave me the same info that you mentioned. I'll let you know how it goes. Best of opportunity to you!

Thanks for your response Phil! Best of luck to you!! This interview sounds relatively simple, but I'm the type of person that gets nervous at any sort of interview. The recruiter (assistant) originally wanted to schedule me for Thursday (today) also, but I have a dry frequent cough at the moment and didn't want to have to deal with that during the interview. Hopefully it will go away soon, as mine is scheduled for Friday. I hope it goes well with you! :nurse:

Hi nurses vanessa and Phil,

I received a phone call today, I scheduled an interview on Monday.

Good luck to you both and any information you would like to share would be much appreciated.

i did the phone interview just right now and it didn't take long, less than 10 mins... it means i am screwed... i don't even think she was able to get all that i said... =( but good luck to the rest of you...

@bbyjaden -- I don't think 10 minutes is too bad, the caller told me it should take around 15 maybe 20 minutes. All is not yet lost! I don't know what the questions are, but by the description of the caller (basic/generic questions) they don't sound like they would need a very long time to answer. How was your interview? Was it annoying having to speak slowly/pause for the interviewer to type out everything you said? I'm worried I might talk too fast out of nervousness...and that to slow down would break my chain of thought, haha.

this was my first interview at all after submitting a lot of applications all over california... i didn't get dumped having graduated in NV... anyway, i didn't get interrupted at all... that's why i'm thinking that i was talking too fast or she wasn't able to jot down all that i was saying... she was really nice and laid back but i thought i was too nervous that i choke on some my answers... at the end i did ask how many slots are open... and she told there'll be 6 slots and around 300 applications... i was even surprised to get a call cause i've just turned in my online app 2 days ago... when is your interview? good luck to u and i'm sure u'll do well... =)

Thanks for sharing, bbyjaden =) Wow, 6 slots huh? That really isn't a lot, but that's pretty much how every other new grad program seems to be faring. My interview is in a couple hours--3pm PST. I'll post any other info I get that you haven't already mentioned (if there is any!). Good luck too on moving up in the hiring process :nurse: :) !

wow, i just had my phone interview now--the recruiter called 1 hour and 30 minutes before my scheduled time!! (called 1:30pm instead of 3pm). i literally just got out of the shower. she said she had a family emergency and was wondering if i would be available to talk now (of course i wasn't, but i figured 3 questions shouldn't be tooooo difficult).

she was very nice, and recorded the answer by hand onto paper. she said she would be forwarding these answers to the nurse educator for further review, and to check my application status (online) next week to see a change. if it says "in review", that means i'll be moving forward, and if it says "not selected"--well, that's pretty self-explanatory.

i feel the brief interview went well, but i know i was caught off-guard and not quite as prepared as i would have liked to be. i hope i didn't say anything stupid...

overall, my interview was only about 8 minutes! so @bbyjaden, don't feel too bad... actually, i think it would be tough to make the recruiter write out responses for a full 15-20 minutes. i guess now we just wait and pray, and re-check our statuses next week.

good luck! :nurse::redbeathe
