Hello,
I have read previous posts on here over the last few months regarding admission to SPC's AS Nursing program. I applied for the fall 2013 semester. Are there any applicants out there who also applied? I am playing the waiting game. Do any previous applicants know how long it takes to hear if you are accepted or not, once the application window closes? Thank you:)
Is anyone going to be working while they are going to school or rely on loans? If you are working ,what kinda work you do? how many hours would you be working? when will you know if you are getting behind on things? after a test or you will just feel it? i am trying to decided what i should do. i obviously cant afford to go part time due to bills i have to pay, but i also cant rely on student loans to get me through the next 4 semesters.
I will be working. I'm not sure how many hours yet d/t the fact that we don't have our class schedules. The kind of work is nursing (LPN). Though I need to work, school is priority so if I found my grades dropping d/t work I would have to cut back hours. I would make the correction if I found myself not having enough study time outside class to cover material.
Keep going,
I believe they do, they have a ebook only package that is about 1/2 the price. Go to SPC website - bookstore- Barnes and noble spc link- enter course info for nursing 1 - chose any section ( they all have the same book list) and book requirements/ recommendations will be listed with prices.
Hey guys,
I also got accepted into the program this Fall 2013 and am currently working on my to do list.
I was wondering if anyone knew what/where/how to complete the following:
-Wavier of License Guarantee Form
-Handbook Signature (Student Agreement Form)
-Skills Kit Receipt
-ATI Testing Signature Page
Its not like there's a download and print option for these so any help/direction would be appreciated.
Also, is it better to get the hepB and flu shots or is choosing to submit a declination form ok?
Thanks guys!!!

I just did that. Now I feel sick.
Looks like all the required books will probably cost about $1000. I looked up all the ISBNs on Amazon of the required books in the Nursing I package (marked Package Component individually) and if you bought them all separately you'd save about $45 off the bookstore's price for the whole package. If I can't find better prices on other websites I'll probably buy the bookstore's package because it says you get ebook versions as well as the print versions. That's worth an extra $45 to me.
Anyone have a good site for discounted textbooks?
I did the exact same thing, Highwaygirl. Really hope the bookstore has all the used books available. Oh and don't forget about the 12 month access pass, skill kit, lab fees, stethoscope ect ect ect..... Some textbook sites had some books cheaper, some the same price. In order to get the best deal you would have to find the cheapest prices for each and order from several different websites.(Textbook wheel, hgregg, 1/2, eBay, amazon, ect). Of course then you don't get the ebooks and may not get cd's ( if they should have them). If you are ok with not having the print versions (i am not- I cant even read a book on kindle) you can save some money.
HWGIRL it says that but i wouldn't count on being there the whole 6 hours. We were out in 4 and that included the test at the end.
Also to note on the books: some instructors recommend different books. From a friend of mine who is going into her third semester, she told me the only book she used in the first semester was the Fundamentals book, the TABERS, the NANDA and the drug-guide books. She said those will basically become your bible for the first semester and recommended you bring those to class even though they are a pain. When you get into clinicals, bring the NANDA and drug-guide. The rest you wont use.
The Syllabus is huge. She recommended seperating it into 2 binders. One for theory and one for class. It will make your life easy. The first theory test you will need to know the theorist even the weird ones. Dont bother getting the little booklets because they test from the book and syllabus.
You will also need to get a SIMCHART. They are getting really big on that. Elseivor has some great resources that you can buy with the package, however she never really needed to use them
In the first semester, they teach alot bout ATI, which they will push push push to help prepare you for the NCLEXX.It can be overwhelming in the begining and you wont use it till the middle of the semester so try to stay ahead of it. It really helps you out in the long run.
You will have your skills stuff you will be doing the first few weeks, they are only worth a point so dont spend too much time on them. Be sure to practice the math at least once a week since you don't get tested on it frequently but it will become second nature to you if you stay ontop of it. the projects are easy so don't fret on those.
Stethoscope: get a good one. She got a ULTRASCOPE and absolutely LOVES it but MDF is still good. You can get them online or on AMAZON pretty reasonably.
If you do the vocab and use the syllabus you will do great on the test/quizes. The powerpoints are useful to study from and help with vocab.
There are 2 great apps to use for first semester. iTRIAGE and ONLINE MEDICAL DICTIONARY that helps when the TABER's doesn't have it.
Highwaygirl,
Yes, that is the class I am going to. Cathy said it would last until about 1:30. I was a little confused when I saw schedule myself. My guess is they schedule a lot of extra time for each step. We will find out soon, though!
Mhasan77,
So much useful information in that post, thank you! Did your friend mention if you will need to use the other books in later semesters? A friend that started last fall mentioned that you needed a pull cart for all the books you have to carry around. I guess this made me think we really did need all those books.
Thanks for all that info, Mhasan77! Do you know which book is the NANDA book? I didn't see anything on the required books list with a title similar to that.
I have some news from the bookstore. Apparently, the books on the book list for Nursing I are also used in Nursing II, so next semester we won't have much to buy. They are selling an e-book only package for all the books required from a certain publisher (Elsevier). This suggests to me that - at least with those books - you don't need to haul a hard-copy book to class.
You can preview what the Elsevier e-books look like by going to www.pageburst.com. There are demonstration videos on the site that show the e-book product.
Normally I like to have a hard copy of my textbooks, but I think I'm going to go with the e-book only package. The money I save will let me buy a tablet for in-class notetaking.
The bookstore clerk also told me that although in the past they have sold a printed copy of the syllabus, they are not allowed to do that this year. So if you want any of the syllabus printed you have to do it yourself. It's something like 500 pages. My printer isn't going to be up to that challenge, I fear.
I also stopped by Scrubs and Stuff (intersection of Park and Tyrone Blvd), which has white polos and white scrub tops that already have the SPC Nursing logo embroidered on them. The scrub tops are around $24. I'm not sure how much the polos are because I didn't like them. I bought the SPC iron-on patch ($4) at the bookstore and will find white polos at another store. The scrubs store also had the three styles of scrub pants we can choose from for clinicals (one with an elastic waist all around, one with elastic in the back and drawstring in the front, and a cargo-pant style with a drawstring). The regular pants were around $17 and the cargo pants were about $25. This scrubs store gives a 10% discount to SPC students.

Afave, thank you for the info. I guess we are all very excited and eager to start our nursing adventure :)
How was your first semester? Was it really hard? Did you work a lot at home?
