Spring 2011 UT Health Sciences Nursing Hopefuls

Published

I am a UT Houston hopeful applying for the traditional and accelerated nursing program. I will complete my science prereqs (A&P 1/2) in the summer. I will finish up with Micro and Chem in the fall. I am so focused right now. Anyone else out there? :)

Okay, so one more question about uniforms. Or a few rather: how many days a week do you wear your scrubs? And I was looking at buying a stethoscope and want something unique and easily recognizable, does the tubing have to be plain black or blue? I was thinking about a raspberry or turquoise color.

I got an email this afternoon that I was accepted. Nothing has changed on my UTlink.

Also if you really want to start nursing school this Spring, look at Home Page SFASU School of Nursing. I got a letter that I wasn't accepted to Texas A&M and they said to go to the Rapid Review on the left side menu for the SFA site. It's a list schools who might have openings for next semester. Let the schools know you weren't accepted somewhere else.

For your first and second semester you'll probably wear scrubs about once a week. I only bought two pairs of scrubs and I was just fine my first semester. The second semester you will take psych... most sites require you to wear business casual, but there were at least one or two sites that wanted students to wear scrubs. Again, I was just fine with two pairs since my site required me to wear business casual.

Some people bought an additional pair for 3rd semester since you will most likely have clinicals twice a week, but I did not (I promise you I wore clean scrubs each time I went to the hospital). Not sure what I will do for my 4th, but I'm going to see if I can hold off on buying another pair since I will be graduating in May :D

The tubing does not need to be a specific color. It was kind of funny but a lot of people in my class who bought a litmann classic II stethoscope got the raspberry color. We all though it would be a unique color to have but apparently great minds think alike. I'd say to buy the stethoscope package at the bookstore (you will be surprised to find out that the UT bookstore is actually very reasonable in pricing of books/supplies/etc), littmann lightweight, or littmann classic II (this is what i have). Some people bought a cardiology III, but it's much more expensive. Just make sure the stethoscope you get has both a diaphragm and a bell (some of them don't have bells). You can always buy a stethoscope name tag or a sleeve if you want to set yours apart from someone else's.

wannabean,

I went to the American Heart Association website and found a BLS class there. I'm attending the one on Nov 20th. It is going to be $64. There may be cheaper ones from a different organization but this was the first that I found.

wannabeanRN -

i already did my CPR but one of my classmates teaches Healthcare provider CPR out of her home for $25 (i think). if you PM me i can try to get her contact info for you. i live up on the northside in spring, so i think she lives around this area as well (spring, kingwood, etc)

Hey, I live in The Woodlands. Are you going to be taking the bus?

I'm going to look up if I can find any places offering classes that are fairly close to where I live. But I'm definitely going to keep that in mind!! Thanks. :) Btw, which day did you have your interview??

Hi Kimmy and everyone else,

Where do you plan on parking for school? Is riding the light rail the best option (how far is the walk from the drop off station to the school ?) Is there contract parking available?

Kimmy088 - thanks so much for all the info you've been giving us. It's so helpful because right now I'm soooooo clueless about what to expect! I have so many questions. :) Will they inform us about our uniform and supplies in the admission packet? Also, would you recommend the stethoscope you have? Where do you recommend we buy it from, plus all the other supplies like scissors, pen light, etc?

Hi Kimmy and everyone else,

Where do you plan on parking for school? Is riding the light rail the best option (how far is the walk from the drop off station to the school ?) Is there contract parking available?

Everytime I've gone to the school, I always parked at the UT School of Public Health parking area. It's really near the school but the only thing is that the parking fees are pretty high and the space is really limited....

Hi Speakthetruth, I got wait listed today too. Any idea how many applicants they typically wait list in a given semester and if the list ever moves? It's better than a decline I guess, but I'm not very hopeful at this point...

Parking is not pretty...

You will be on campus three times a week at least (usually for the first month or so)

1. If you park in the garages, then it's best to park across the street at MDA ($10 if you're there over 5 hours) OR park in the open lot right beside the school ($11 for 5 hrs+) OR park at the UT Towers that is right across the street from the TMC Transit center stop (You get a student discount if you bring your student ID. They'll take 2 hours off your actual stay and charge you for that instead unless you stay over 8 hours (then they'll just charge you the full amount which, I think, is $8)

2. If you take the rail from the Fannin south station, it's $3 a day to park and about a $1 total to ride both ways if you get a student card from the station downtown.

3. There are some who take the bus in from a park and ride (I want to say this is like $4 or $5 dollars total),

4. There are some who park in the brown lots (can be charged from $1 to $6 max) and take the med center shuttle for free.

5. Some park on el paseo for free and get a ride from the UT shuttle also for free (there are limited spaces so i wouldn't suggest parking there on a day where you really need to get to school on time)

6. There is contract parking available (the one I know about is the parking lot right beside the UT towers). I want to say it's like $60 or $70 a semester or something like that.

and... there are probably other ways, but those are the main ones i know of. Hopefully that helps :D

No problem :) I really don't want to do schoolwork anyhow! haha!

They will give you a complete list of everything you will need for Care I and clinicals in your admissions packet.

Yes, I really like my stethoscope and I would recommend it :) It doesn't really matter where you buy your pen light and scissors. Just that they work you'll be fine.
