South University FNP MSN program???

Nursing Students NP Students

Updated:   Published

So did anyone or is anyone currently in the FNP or Adult NP online program at this time? I spoke to an admissions rep and was really impressed. The set up is nice with one course at a time, although was told you can talk to your advisor and sometimes layer your courses here and there as well (like an 11wk course with one 5.5 wk course) which I'd prefer to do to get done faster...since I did my ASN at Excelsior and am finishing my BSN I'm well used to online format courses and have my time down to a science. I was planning on beginning my application process now, so that in December we submit everything with the potential to start the first week of Feb 2014...anyone else??? Any thoughts???

Thank you and goodluck to you EJN.

Hello JMHanna, how do you find the SUO NP program so far?

Hey Jenny, Yeah, absolutely! Please PM the Facebook page info (I know AN moderators have some specifics about sharing that). Although I haven't been accepted yet, I'd love to continue learning from your experiences. So far, everything I've gotten from you guys has been super helpful -- The simple fact that I chose SU was due in large part to the positive experiences and words of encouragement from members on this very forum (lhflanurseNP for instance).

Thanks and greetings from a very rainy Miami!

Ted

I have been very satisfied with it thus far. You have to be willing to learn independently, but the teachers I have had this far have been very helpful if I did have a question. I read the chapters assigned each week, but the teacher would probably never know if you did or not. I have not had a test yet in the program so my grade has been based on the decision question and the multiple papers due. However, acceding to some of the newer students there are tests now in a lot of the beginning courses like APN 1 and APN2. I am going to start my first practicum in March, so I can't tell you much about that part of the program. The hardest class I have had so far was Research, but my instructor was wonderful!!! And the best part, she was also a SU FNP MSN graduate, which made me fell like the program must be working.

Practicum sounds exciting but at the same time nerve wracking. Goodluck! How long does every practicum and how many practicums do we need to complete?

Hi JayJaybsnrn

There are 5 practicums (Advanced Health and Physical Assessment, Adult/Gerontology, Women's Health, Pediatrics, and Family) for FNP with each being 11 weeks long. The first practicum requires 60 clinical hours, while the remaining four practicums require 180 hours each.

Oh wow. I think the hardest part for me is the womens health. I just hope I can find preceptors that accepting men student np.

Hey lhflanurseNP, MSN

I am currently enrolled at South Univ Online FNP MSN program. Just had a question. How did you like the program? Did you graduate already? Do you feel it prepared you to be an independent provider? Im still thinking about applying to USA program and wanted to make sure. I know its accredited, but is that enough?

ebcamille, I graduated in December and passed my AANP boards in January. I will be starting my practice in 2 weeks. Have gotten my NPI number and have applied for Medicare. I don't believe any school really prepares you to be a primary care provider...you get that and develop it during your clinical rotations IF you work hard at seeing various patients and really putting yourself out there...see the patient, assess them, diagnose them, devise a plan then review it with your preceptor. As you grow in your confidence and skills, so your preceptor will start giving you more rope! The school does not have any lab time, so everything must be learned in your clinical rotation (suturing, biopsy, etc). If you let your preceptor know that up front, they will work hard to include that in your training as well. I left my rotations feeling somewhat prepared and know that my confidence will continue to grow as I cultivate my practice.

IhflanurseNP thank you for the update. I have been following all your discussion posts about SU ever since I started in Feb 2014. I am glad that you passed board and can mover on with your future career as an NP. I am starting my preceptorship this week and find my self very nervous!!
