Sorry state of Nursing ...

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I am a Male RN with about 8 years of work experience in the ER, Prison, Acute PTSD/TBI @ the VA. I came from another Industry (Aviation/Airline), after 9/11 retrained into Nursing with the thought of doing something that "Matters" instead of making a corporation another pile of $$$$. After 8 years this has been my Observation of the current state of affairs within Nursing.

1) I have never been so poorly treated within a professional career as I have been with nursing, Managers MD's and Patients all use you as a human punching bag (I can tolerate some of this from a sick PT but not my peers and above). Unprofessionalism often rules and vengeful remarks and treatment are the norms..ie... I have heard the following from RN's,MD,managers..."shes a stupid ***** (MD), you need to find another line of work (MBA manager to new grad), "you need to pass those meds faster , whats wrong with you, cant hack it" (Charge RN).

2) Call offs and low pay...Name any other profession where you have to take hard earned leave or rotate to a totally different unit and are expected to perform (Board of nursing should demand changes to this its unsafe). BSN starting at 17 to 19 a hr nationwide avg...really...MSN with 5 years unless specially trained 60K...for real...(Bank of America pays a avg of 70 k to 100k for mid level MBA's)

I retired from USAirways in 2003, there were troubles galore with the company..but I was paid well, had exc healthcare...WAS TREATED AS A PROFESSIONAL...WHICH I WAS AND STILL AM.

Nursing as a profession.......only if you join the service as my wife did (CDR USN ret) ....to a hospital your a expenditure that they work like a dog, then throw away.

Its a sad state only getting worse as the economy is slow and Obama care will reshape the industry in pay and quality of care.

Good By Nursing.....it was a experience of a life ...time to do other things.

Specializes in 7 Years ED, 6 Years TBI/PTSD unit VA.

With regards to pay CMC health system here in CLT was paying 19.00hr for RN ADN grad, +50cents a HR 19.50 for BSN ....I worked at Gaston Comm Hosp along side a MSN with 2 years making 26.00hr (2007). The nationwide average is flawed as Calif/North East pay rates are quite high. No one commented on getting pulled or having to take leave for low pt count...that is a norm for this industry.....its outrageous .......as for me...I plan on devoting time in some fashion to Wounded Warriors ...I have seen way too many kids get sub standard care at the VA.

Specializes in Critical Care.

The higher pay (due to higher cost of living) in Calif/North East is part of the average and does increase the average but doesn't make it 'flawed', that's what an average is. The average pay for other Bachelor's grads also includes Calif/North East, making it an accurate comparison, not flawed.

As for staffing variability and getting called off, it's the same for Physicians; low census=less pay.

Specializes in med/surg, home health, nursing education.

Yes, this teacher right here makes less (salary) than a brand new nurse in my area... But I love what I do... And only teaching 3 days per week with 5 weeks off at Christmas and summers off is a trade off for the lower wages...

:nailbiting:Say it isn't so!!!!! I made more than that 11years ago as an LPN! And my LPN pay was $10/hr more as base pay BEFORE I got the RN 3 years ago! Holy cow! I hope this BSN pay you're referring to wasn't in recent years!!!! If so, you guys are on the wrong coast!!!:nailbiting:

And I thought the new grad RNs here were poorly paid at $23/hr. When I was offered this as a new grad RN at a different facility, I walked out because that meant that they weren't offering me zilch for my 20+ years of LPN experience, including med/surg and ventilator experience as an LPN. I don't quiver over pennies but I will fight like hell over a wallet!!!

To the OP: oh how I wish I knew how to do something else besides sitting on my ***! If I did, I would be right there with you. So for now, two days a week is as close as I can get to freedom. Good luck to you!

It is so and this was in 2011. I must of been bamboozled which is probably why I didn't stay long. I also drove my own vehicle and had no compensation for gas. I'm a school nurse now (federally employed) and make more than I did as a bedside nurse in NC. Starting pay for nurses in NC is $20-$21/hr and most do not give more for BSN vs ADN.

Male nurses have a more difficult time handling the abuse of nurses. Women are used to it.

Think about this, Howard.. as a man you got better treatment!

It's true. And one of the major reasons nurses are treated so poorly is because nursing is viewed as a woman's profession. See also: teachers.

Specializes in Critical Care, ED, Cath lab, CTPAC,Trauma.

Unfortunately.... everything you say right now is true....it makes me very sad. It wasn't always like this. I think the time has come for nurses to organize like Police and firefighters.....I'm just not so sure it's possible.

A little cheese with that whine?

Don't mourn, organize! Of course it's possible. How many of you whiners will step up and put what it takes into unionizing, put their livelihood on the line for the betterment of others? Show of hands? Anyone? :: peering into the ether :: Anyone? (And yes, I have been present at the beginning of a nurses' union, and yes, I have been out on strike. So there.) Anyone here ever do that? Risk something more than a few whiny electrons? No? OK.

Ok then. I don't care what you do. Just this: Stop whining.

I am so tired of this attitude. Whining proves nothing, does nothing, solves nothing. Go get another certification or education that will get you a better paying position you'll like. Start your own business and be your own boss. Go live in the woods and haul your own water. Volunteer your time and treasure towards effective unionizing and collective bargaining. Join the Peace Corps and do something for somebody else-- I hear they have three-12 month tours available now. Take up bungee jumping or yoga. Go visit every Major League Baseball park. Learn to make beer. Do something. I really don't care what you do.

But just ... stop coming here and whining. All of you. It makes my hair hurt. Go do something.

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! ::runs screaming off into the distance::

I agree with HowardHughes re: lack of professional treatment of nurses. I am also a 2nd career person, BA in another field. I was horrified by the treatment received in nursing school but never dreamed it was an attitude imbedded throughout the profession. What other profession would tolerate this? I don't agree with the teacher, most teachers are unionized, most nurses are not. I was never a fan of unions, but if you look at how nurses are treated and how police and firefighters are treated, there is a world of difference. I have been dissed by upper mgmt, mid management, janitors, clerks, etc. Never saw anything like this out in the 'real world'.

I am in my late 50's and don't want to start another career. I am leaning towards Holistic Nursing as a private practice and supplementing that with per diem work. Obamacare is a disaster about to come down on us, ask any Home Health RN how much pressure they are under to meet CMS guidelines while generating revenue for the agency. Lastly, I have had several of my son's female high school friends ask me about going into nursing. I hate to burst their bubbles, but the look of horror on their faces when I give them the scoop is priceless!!!!

It's great to have observations from someone who is qualified to make those comparisons. Are we an "abused child" profession? . . . dealing with poor conditions for so long that it is perceived as normal?

As I read the op's post, I thought I have heard and seen many things like the above. Gets to the point where it is in one ear out the other, some react by replyig the same way, then there are the criers. I have worked since I was a teen and this happened in other jobs too. I guess none of th were "professional" job before. People that act like this and these comments were not shocking for me. par for the course. frankly , I am suprised when they don't act like ths!!!!!

To GrnTea, not all states have strong unions, and some of us who have attempted to organize have been promptly "laid off". Here in MA, the unions have caved time and again, the only thing they seem to win on is "safe staffing" but the company decides acuity level that determines staffing. I am verging on too old to keep fighting, and some people do need to vent their horror at the dark brick wall that is nursing.

We have been told when pulled, "you are lucky to have a job or not get cancelled". I dislike the cancellations due to census or overstaffing alot!!!! we always work short aides and sometimes multiple nurses but we are never allowed to take one less pt or have an extra nurse. I don't know how things work in other industries. aren't lay offs pretty common in other fields?

I believe I mentioned several alternatives for those who give up on that, including improving your employability by working for yourself. Scary? Risky? You betcha. And your point is?

I have seen this for too long and I weary of the excuses and the constant "venting" -- and the constant excuses for the venting. Enough already. Go do something productive and creative. I don't agree that venting is always, constantly, wonderfully OK-- I think it's negative and counterproductive in the short and the long term, reinforcing bad feelings while offering exactly nothing to replace them.

As to organizing: Historically, being laid off is part of the risk you take; doesn't mean you have to stop-- nobody's gonna shoot you over staffing and hours and pay like the copper bosses shot Joe Hill. Nursing and hospital administration are not going to burn up your children at a Christmas party like management did in coal country. Nobody is too old to stop trying, or too young to start to build an organization.
