Every so often I'll hear lyrics on songs on the radio that remind me of nursing... Here's a couple of examples I've heard on the radio recently, unfortunately I can't remember who sings either of 'em...:monkeydance:
"I am barely breathing, and I can't find the air..."
"I have become, comfortably numb..."
Anyone got any more?
"Goin' Out of My Head," Little Anthony and the Imperials. Could be me or the patients on any given day.
Seconding the many votes for "Comfortably Numb" - especially as you're pushing Narcan on your third OD'd junkie of the night. "Okay, it's just a little pinprick - there'll be no more high, but you may feel a little sick..."
"Respect," Aretha Franklin. Self-explanatory.
"Night Fever," Bee Gees. When it's 0130 on a Saturday and the Department is just starting to get slammed...
"Poison," Bell Biv DeVoe. "All right, sir, you ingested how much of what and how long ago?"
"Goodnight My Angel," Billy Joel. As you're praying for the Ativan to kick in on the anxious, insomniac LOL who's been alternating between the call bell and the bed-exit alarm every fifteen seconds...
"Nightingale," Carole King. Just the title is always good for a big grin.
"What Is This Feeling," Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel. Every department has at least one MD everyone loves to hate. "Loathing! Un-adulterated loathing!"
"Tourniquet," Evanescence. "Major trauma incoming, ETA seven minutes..."
More to come!
There's a song by an artist named Sia called "Breathe Me" that reminds me of nursing because I associate it with my daughters when they were in NICU, and also of my young nephew when he was having a brain tumor removed:
"Be my friend, hold me, wrap me up, unfold me, I am small and needy, warm me up and breathe me..."
It just sounds to me like something a baby or child might say to a nurse.
Any of you who watched "Six Feet Under" on HBO will know that song because it's the one they played at the very end of the last episode of the final season.
Another one is by A Perfect Circle. It's called "The Nurse Who Loved Me", and it also reminds me of my kids being in NICU. But if you listen to the lyrics, it sounds more like a nurse in a psych setting!
After reading through some of these, I thought of the Aimee Mann song, "Save Me":
"Like Peter Pan or Superman, you will come to save me, C'mon and save me, if you could save me from the ranks of the freaks that suspect they could never love anyone"
Probably some emphasis needed on the part about being saved from the freaks .
Pink Floyd's Take Up Thy Stethoscope & Walk
Even thought it's starts with "Doctor doctor" & he's singing to the doctor.
Im in bed
Achin head
Gold is lead
Choke on bread
Underfed
Gold is lead
Jesus bled
Pain is red
Are goon
Grow go
Greasy spoon
You swoon
June bloom
Music seems to help the pain
Seems to cultivate the brain.
Doctor kindly tell your wife that
Im alive - flowers thrive - realize - realize
Realize.
YAY for Floyd Fans!! :w00t:
And for the drug seekers, I bequeath you "Please please please let me get what I want" by the Smiths:
Good times for a change, see the luck I've had would make a good man turn bad; So please, please, please, let me, let me, let me, let me get what I want this time.
Haven't had a dream in a long time, See, the life I've had could make a good man bad; So for once in my life, let me get what I want; Lord knows it would be the first time, Lord knows it would be the first time.
Also by the Smiths, for ICU : "Girlfriend in a Coma":
Girlfriend in a coma, I know, I know it's serious...Do you really think she'll pull through, do you really think she'll pull through?
"Panic" by The Smiths might be a good, upbeat choice for codes.

Ugh... Pink's "Just Like a Pill" always reminds me of my obnoxious pain medicine-seeking patients.
"I can't stay on your life support, there's a
shortage in the switch,
I can't stay on your morphine, cuz its making me
itch
I said I tried to call the nurse again but shes
being a little *****,
I think I'll get outta here, where I can
Run just as fast as I can
To the middle of nowhere
To the middle of my frustrated fears
And I swear you're just like a pill
Instead of makin' me better, you keep makin' me
ill
You keep makin' me ill"
