Every so often I'll hear lyrics on songs on the radio that remind me of nursing... Here's a couple of examples I've heard on the radio recently, unfortunately I can't remember who sings either of 'em...:monkeydance:
"I am barely breathing, and I can't find the air..."
"I have become, comfortably numb..."
Anyone got any more?
I love Mother's Little Helper! My first album I owned was Through the Past Darkly. The Stones were the first concert I went to, Steel Wheels with my parents! I was young! Anyway enough of memory lane.
I think that Kenny Rogers: "You got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em. Know when to walk away know when to run"...........
fits in nicely to the job.
Since I'm still looking for a job, I've been thinking of MIKA's "Grace Kelly"
"I can be brown, I can be blue, I can be violet sky! I can be helpful, I can be purple, I can be anything you like. Gotta be green, gotta be mean, gotta be everything, no. Why don't you like me? Why don't you like me? Walk out the door. "
Are We Human by The Killers always makes a nursing montage run through my mind.
"Will your system be alright?
When you dream of home tonight
There is no message we're receiving
Let me know, is your heart still beating?
Are we human, or are we dancer
My sign is vital, my hands are cold
And I'm on my knees looking for the answer"
"Brothers in Arms" by Dire Straits (with apologies to my "sisters in arms")
Through these fields of destruction
Baptism of fire
I've watched all your suffering
As the battles raged higher
And though they did hurt me so bad
In the fear and alarm
You did not desert me
My brothers in arms
"Think" by Aretha Franklin
I didn't even know you, you came to me and too much you wouldn't take
I ain't no psychiatrist, I ain't no doctor with degree
It don't take too much high IQ's to see what you're doing to me
"Bang your head" by Quiet Riot
Bang your head wake the dead
We're all metal mad, it’s all you have
So bang your head and raise the dead oh yeah
Metal health it drives you mad, mad, mad, mad
"Walk on Water" by Blue Country
It’s the path you take the steps you make
That make you who you are
It’s the life you live
The gifts you give
The love that’s in your heart
Just try to do the best you can to be a better man
You don’t have to walk on water
It’s how you walk on land
:monkeydance: I am the unit DJ. I choose all the music that we listen to at night and I have been compiling a list of nursing related songs. So far I have a few and I need more suggestions. (My iPod is 30 gigs so help me out). Some that I already have:
Comfortably Numb - Pink Floyd
This song reminds me of a neurotrauma patient. "Hello, is there anybody in there? Just nod if you can hear me..."
Banana Boat Song - Harry Bellafonte
"Daylight come and we wanna go home."
One - Metallica
Bring Me to Life - Evanescence
"Wake me up inside... save me from the nothing I've become"
Rock and Roll All Nite - KISS
Only for the night shift
Dr. Feelgood - Montley Crue
RESPECT - Aretha Franklin
Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin
hehehe... I know, it's not really that funny, but it's horribly wicked
Hotel California - Eagles
Because sometimes I feel more like concierge than a nurse.
Let's Get it On -
When we are getting ready to intubate.
Won't Get Fooled Again - The Who
For those patients that like to play games... Yeah, the nurse can't tell that you are drug seeking.
Sympathy for the Devil - Rolling Stones
For when you wish you could be the devil
Walk this Way - Aerosmith
For my friends in PT that like to tell the patients how to "walk this way"
Dream On - Aerosmith
Self-explanatory, do you think?
Every Breath You Take - Police
For the Respiratory Therapist in your life!
Freebird - Lynard Skynyrd
For the patient threatening to go AMA
That'll Be The Day - Buddy Holly
What we would like to answer to our most pleasant patients.
Brown Eyed Girl - Van Morrison
For the hot, young chick that needs an enema... gotta love the one brown eye!
Great Balls of Fire - Jerry Lee Lewis
Scrotal abscess!
Twist and Shout - Beatles
For a closed reduction at the bedside.
Crazy - Patsy Cline
Needs no explaination
Hard Days Night - Beatles
Another one just for night shift.
Sexual Healing - Marvin Gaye
From time to time we find a patient with a rather frisky visitor.
You Shook Me All Night Long - AC/DC
In the Midnight Hour - Wilson Pickett
My Name Is - Eminem
For the ETOH intoxicated, detoxing pt.
Super Freak - Rick James, b*tch
For the Gavida 4 para 3, age 21 female patient.
I'm Coming Out - Diana Ross
For the occassional drag queen that makes his way to the ER.
Pour Some Sugar on Me - Def Lep
I know it's a lame song, but for severe hypoglycemia it fits.
In the Air Tonight - Phil Collins
For those f-ed up nights when nothing goes right and all the psych pts come in.
Head Like a Hole - Nine Inch Nails
What a song for nurses... "head like a hole, black as your soul, I'd rather die than give you control." That pretty much sums up ICU nurses.
Hot in Here - Nelly
For that patient that loves to roam the halls with too little clothes on.
Since You Been Gone - Kelly Clarkson
We have this one really bad pulmonologist. The kind you cringe when you have to call him of orders. I always joke that this is his pts singing. "Since you been gone, I can breathe for the first time."
Welcome to the Jungle - Guns and Roses
Need I say more?
Sabotage - Beastie Boys
When you get a really sh1tty group of patients.
Creep - Radiohead
humm, Have you ever had this patient?
"I'm a creep. I'm a weirdo. What the hell am I doing here? I don't belong here."
Or maybe that's the voice in your own head?
Toxic - Britney
I love calling poison control.
How I Could Just Kill a Man - Cypress Hill
Tempting....
Mama Said Knock You Out - LL Cool J
Sometimes you gotta make mama happy. Cause if mama ain't happy ain't nobody happy!
A Change Would Do You Good - Sheryl Crow
When you look down at the bandage that you just learned 10 min ago in report was clean, dry, and intact but somehow it's suddenly saturated with dry blood.
My Lovin' (You're Never Gonna Get It) - En Vogue
Diladid... no you're never gonna get it, not this time. For the new admit that casually insists, "The only pain med that works for me is 4 mg of Dilaudid" when she comes in for left toe cellulitis.
You Outta Know - Alanis Morrissette
I'm here to remind you of the mess you left when you went away. For the annoying frequent flyer.
Hard Knock Life - Jay-Z
For the patient with babymomma drama at the house, trying to stay straight, but the world is just on his back. (sigh) so sad.
Bye Bye Bye - Backstreet Boys
To celebrate when that demanding patient finally gets D/C orders!
Breathe - Faith Hill
The L&D Nurse's anthem.
U Can't Touch This - MC Hammer
Because every once in a while there comes that demented old fart with the wandering hands.
Hips Don't Lie - Shakira (spelling?)
S/P ORIF of the hip.
Fast Car - Tracy Chapman
For the MVA.
We Don't Have to Take Our Clothes Off - Jermaine Stewart
hehehe I dunno.

Back in the day... early 90's as a CNA in LTC, I used to sing "We Care A Lot" by Faith No More... of course everyone knows that song now, thanks to "Dirty Jobs". I still break into that song on occasion.
Also, I think it was the Dead Kennedys... I can't remember... that had this robotic droning song I would also "sing" when I was annoyed at work, "I'm working at my job, I'm so happy. More boring by the day, but they pay me!"
Nowadays, in Gero Psych, I like to sing "Mother's Little Helper" by the Stones...
"What a drag it is getting old...
So Doctor please. Some more of these. Outside the door, she took four more...
What a drag it is getting old... HEY!"
