Some people have a lot of.....nerve....

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Just when you think you have heard and seen it all.....:(

1. Had a pt who has been a DNR forever, at the nursing home and our hospital. Family is going out of town for a week, want the patient made a full code while they are gone....in case something happens in their absence....HELLO!! If the person does code, we have about a snowball's chance in Hades of reviving him. It should be illegal to change a person's code status for "family" convenience, guilt...geesh, how low can we go....

2. Have a couple of LPNs on our general med/surg unit. Good nurses, I would let them take care of me or my family any day....had a pt's family member come in the other day, saw nurse's name tag with her credentials and remarked "Hmmm, I don't think LPNs should be in charge of patient care." Well, honey kiss my behind....I was the house stupidvisor for the weekend....I told the LPN if she got anymore grief from that family just come and look me up and I would be more than happy to deal with that family.....:(

Some people just don't know when to shut up!!!!

wow!! I agree with you on the DNR thing, that sucks. I know ALOT of very good hard working, very competent LPN's that could take care of me anyday. One of my best friends is an LPN and I call her for advice sometimes.

A good argument for each and all of us to establish a Durable Attorney for Health Care who has written instructions from us expressing our desires, to handle these situations where we are unable to express ourselves directly. Otherwise, this is the kind of thing that is completely legal.

I think it was the durable POA making that decision....that is what makes it even more disgusting....

Maybe they would appreciate the skilled labor of the janitor taking care of their family member? Im sorry I would have went off on that ignorant buttwipe for making that comment. I dont however have the tact for supervisor.... can ya tell? Some people should breed nor breathe, but thats just my opinion.... What a shame for the LPN's on the floor to be thought of that way by that family member, maybe they will get the chance to walk over the body of the person that said it as they allow the "skilled" to take care of them(little voice in my mind screaming SLOW CODE) I have worked with many LPN's that I would not only allow to take care of me or a family member, I have upon occassions asked for them over a RN that I just didnt feel comfortable with.

I hate that the attitudes of the uninformed reek with discord.

Im going to go flush my mouth now

Zoe, I know what you mean. There are a couple RN's at my facility that I wouldn't want to touch me with a 10 foot pole, but that LPN could care for me anyday. Unfortunately, that family member didn't make the comment in my earshot, or I would have said something to her. This family has always been a pain in the butt when they had their family member in before....so we knew it would be something....always is....

OMG I certainly hope they werent kin to me... My step mother is this way and I am so ashamed everytime she is admitted with something....

Yeah those are the familys that expect the"service" to be as a hotel would be and the "family" not move a finger to help or even move out of your way because they believe they have the right.

Oxygen stealers is all they are...

OK...hold on...still laughing at that....*hoooo man!!* That's great I'm gonna add that to my list of "funnies"!!!

Oh, and by the way!! STUPID FAMILY!!! You should NOT be allowed to change code status just cuz you want to....puleez! How about you postpone your vacation til your "loved one" is either gone, or recovered...whatever the case may be?!?!?!

The funny thing was the pt was their normal state of health. Really no significant changes to speak of....You never know when your time is up. One of our neighbors dropped dead yesterday and was DOA on arrival...in their early 70's but in excellent health for their age....just goes to show you never know....:stone

How stupid! Calling off a DNR for family convenience! WTF!

Ever consider reporting that family to the ethics committee?? Might be interesting to see what they think about such things...and the doctor that goes along with 'code prn at family convenience'. :(

The public is so ignorant...many still demand to 'see the doctor NOW' too...because they're all over the place on ER they think they are there in real life too...yeah right.

I wonder if the recent vigorous promotion of RN's has led to some of this public prejudice against LPN's. If so it's really a shame. We are all nurses but some forget that. I will not promote myself at the expense of my coworker LVN's.

Like others have said, I too can think of a few LVN's I'd trust my family's life with...and a few RN's I'd refuse to let touch my loved one. A title alone does not make the nurse.
