Some guidance and advice needed please

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hi, I've been browsing around on allnurses for a while and I think that this site is pretty awesome. I'm a pre-nursing student with a little bit of a dilemma and I need some advice and guidance to help put me on the right path to achieve my goal of getting a Bachelor's in Nursing.

I just got my Associate's degree in Liberal Arts and I got into a 4yr private school where I would need to complete 4 pre-req classes and then I'd be able to enter into their nursing program. My problem is, is that my husband is in the military and we're supposedly going to be moving to another state around this time next year.

So I don't know if it'd be worth it for me to go to this school and do two semesters and then move to another state. There's also a slight possibility that we could stay here. Since it's a private school it's a lot of money to attend. I don't know if I should just do a CNA program for the time being, gain some experience and earn some money my last year here. I'd hate to stop going to school for a bit but I don't know what else I should do. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I've been going crazy trying to decide on what I should do. I live in NY btw......Thanks everyone!

My husband was in the service also. I took my prerequisits around the world and immediately enrolled in a nursing program as soon as he was stationed elsewhere. Prereqs are good everywhere where nursing courses are not accepted everywhere. Good luck

If you're concerned about the potential money-wasting of a private school in the event that you move. I would consider doing your prereqs at a public university. Most schools around the country require the same pre-reqs with a few wild cards thrown in, so you aren't wasting any time getting them done. Then when you're settled elsewhere or for sure you're staying here, you'll be free and ready to apply for nursing programs.

I got my first associates degree from a larger public college, the second one at a community college and I'm in the nursing program there now. (3 semesters to go!)

Being an older student myself, I would agree to take your pre-req's right where you are. Dont wait for an uncertain future move to happen or not happen. There are definite price advantages to a community college for pre-req's too.

You could enroll in many public universities that offer Internet courses. I have been able to earn all of my pre-reqs in online course.

The pre-reqs I have are A&P 1&2 as well as Chem 1&2.... I don't think I can take either of those online..

I mean if anyone knows of any legitimate places to take A&P and Chem online that'd be appreciated.

The two courses you've mentioned are not quite popular among schools as online classes. Majority, will not recognize these programs that are not done as class lectures with labs. If you're concerned about these courses I would recommend you wait until you know your next assignment and length of the assignment so you do not waste time.

Be aware that A&P is usually split up in to two courses, and will only be recognized if you take both courses at the same institution to recieve credit.

In saying assignment, I mean to say your husband's "next duty assignment".

I highly suggest knocking out the pre-reqs at a community college. Those are tough classes to take online. Try to get them done asap so that you can get into a program in your new location.

Some community colleges do offer A&P 1 and 2 online.

So I'd have no problem transferring those courses from a community college to whatever 4yr college I end up going to? I'm just worried that they won't transfer.
