Some Excelsior questions

Published

Hello,

I have spent the last 2 hours searching this site to find these answers, but i did not find specifically what I need to know.(though I did learn a lot - thanks!)

Ok short story - in school for BSN - completed entire degree, except got C- in final med surg class. So here I am with lots of student loans, and a very expensive bachelors degree in "professional studies" , well over 150 credits and two kids to support.

I just applied to Excelsior and know I have to wait to see what they say about my transcripts, but in the mean time I need to quickly gauge approximately how long it will take me to get through the program - so:

I know that I probably won't have to take any of the general eds except maybe information literacy.

But when it comes to the nursing component - does everyone always have to take all of those or can some of them usually be transferred?

Has anyone here come in from a similar situation where they did not finish rn program and what did you have to take?

Basically I need to figure out if this is something that I could probably complete by this time next year.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Amanda

I have never heard of anyone getting credit for classes that they took on a RN program. Everyone has to take all the Nursing Test. If you are an LPN you are exempt from taking the second nursing test called "Health Differences." Excelsior does accept undergraduate prerequisites like eng, psych, humanities etc.

Although they state that they will consider your previous nursing courses, nobody has ever reported getting credit for them. If you are an LPN you can be exempt from the second nursing test. As I stated in a previous post, you can take the first test now. After your enrollment is complete, you can take the rest of the tests. It is quite possible for you to finish the program by this time next year if you don't waste any time. Your longest delay will be when you are waiting for a test date for the CPNE.

Thank you for your help! I will get started on the first one.

lizmatt, it took me from 6/4/2007 until 10/17/2007 to get through the nursing exams; I had to take them all, as I came in as a paramedic, not an LPN. I think I spent more of my year in the EC program waiting on the CPNE! :D Good luck to you.

lizmatt....i am in the same situation....i submitted my app on 4/30 and they received my transcripts on 5/7....how long did it take them to review yours and give you an answer?? i also have a BA and didnt finish nursing....(med/surg c-)..curious if you received anything yet...thanks

well, i can't tell you about your nursing classes, but i can tell you that i just applied in april. it took them almost exactly 3 weeks to review my transcripts. i got credit for nc2 because i am an lpn, but other than that, i don't have many answers. good luck!

3 weeks from when they received your transcripts,im assuming or from time of applying??? where would you see the evaluation>?? do they send you a confirmation e-mail?? sorry for all the questions... im real anxious....thanks

i think they send you an e-mail with your eval in it. that will tell you exactly what courses you need to take.,

you got through all nursing exams in 6 months? that's quite impressive!

I'm beginning to wonder if this EC thing is really for me. I am looking into a traditional bridge program in Phoenix now, that's where we are going to move sometime next year when my hubby is done with his school (diesel trucks) I think I really just need more structure.

Lunah, can you tell me if I take the tests for A and P, micro, and that lifespan psych, do they transfer to "regular" schools, or would I be wasting my time taking them?

Psych might but I am pretty sure A&P and Micro will not. Most schools require a lab component to transfer and EC does not have that. Excelsior takes alot of will power and dedication. You have to prepare your mind for it and make yourself study. I finished the whole program in 1 yr. I can remember being so burned out before I even got to the CPNE process. I had even failed 2 exams and had to restudy and repeat them. Looked over Micro for 2 weeks and passed. This program was one of the hardest things I have ever done but the rewards are priceless. My income has increase drastically and my opportunites are endless. Good Luck to you! EC will not work for you unless you give 110% even then you need someone to lift your spirits up when you feel discouraged and we will be here for you!

I came into the program as LPN with a BA in Political Science. I took A&P 1+2, Micro and Chem, all with labs, at my local comm college. Took NC1 in December 2007 then actually applied. Took 4 exams in Sept 2008, last exam in October 2008. Failed first CPNE March 1, 2009, passed 2nd attempt May 10, 2009. I got all A's and B's, worked more than fulltime, have a teenage son and husband, neither drive and we live miles from nowhere. For me, I had to be able to just sit down with books and study on the fly so I turned my dining room into a study hall and worked at it while making dinner, doing laundry, etc. I guess it would depend on how old are your kids, how much sleep do you need, how messy can your house get before you lose your mind. Good luck, stay posted.
