This thread is intended to provide information to nurses that may want to visit North Carolina and would like to know where to go. Please take a moment to share with us why your part of the State is the best.
For me, I think Asheville is a beautiful community. For one, the people make the community wonderful. There is a sence of honesty here and the people are down to earth and very real. The mountains offer a lot of outside recreational time. If you like being outside, there is hiking, camping, boating and a host of other great activities.
I would be wrong if I did not talk alittle about all the wonderful festivals that take place here in Western North Carolina. There is music, crafts, great food and lots of fun.
Let's hear what makes your part of North Carolina special for visitors.
Just wanted to add to the forum....
I live in the Suburbs of Charlotte, in a small town called Davidson, on Lake Norman. Many have heard of Davidson College. There are a number of reasons to move to the Charlotte Metro area. I grew up in this small town, and I have watched Charlotte and many other places around it grow. Charlotte is a new city that is growing...although it is playing catch up to many other big cities, there is a lot to look forward too. That reason alone excites me!
Downtown Charlotte, is a nice place to go on weekends...you can do anything from party/club with your friends to enjoying a quiet intimate dinner, in one of the many uptown restaurants. Charlotte also has a lot to offer in regards to to the arts. Blumenthal Performing Arts Center, hosts many, many Big name plays, concerts, etc. ( Lion King, Grease, Hairspray, Oklahoma, The Producers, etc) There is also, a children's theater, a new children's library --ImaginOn ( www.imaginon.org)There is also an area called NoDA, which is short of North Davidson, and it is now an offical arts district of the city. www.noda.org (check it out) And for whatever its worth, we are home to the Carolina Panthers, and the Charlotte Bobcats, the new arena is almost up!!!
There are just SO many things you can do here, I would suggest visiting, http://www.charlottecvb.org/
Living in Davidson, sometimes feels like living in another world, because everything here is just so NICE. I don't know how else to describe it. Things are a little more relaxed, and far more quaint. They have perserved alot of the history in our town. Nearby there is Birkdale Village, which is a good place to shop or hang out in the summer time ( www.birkdalevillage.net) Many people live above the stores. They sometimes offer concerts and festivals in the summer months. During Christmas time, they actually have a nightly snowfall!!!
Although I don't live exactly on the lake, I can see it from my kitchen window, and there is a park directly behind our home, with a pond. Often we see Geese wondering through our yard. Lake life provides many luxuries that you don't find anywhere else. I think growing up here has spoiled me... :) There are a number of parks where you can take your family and friends, nearby Carowinds... I think I always want to live in the suburbia kind of way.... This is a few of many, reasons why living here in Charlotte Mecklenburg County is a cool place. I could go on and on, but I won't. Hopefully this gives you some insight on my area of North Carolina.
The Festival for the Eno will be 4th of July weekend:
http://www.enoriver.org/festival/index.html
Lots of great music, very focused on environmentally sound practices, arts and crafts, yummy and unique festival food, hot as blazes but a lot of fun. My husband & I will be set up there selling jewelry as Land's Creek jewelry design. If any of you triangle area folks come to the festival, stop by! Also a good reason for non-NC folks to come visit. If you're not working, that is...I know I'll be working Christmas eve and Christmas after I wrangled off on 4th of July...

I live in the Piedmont Triad area now, but grew up in North Mecklenburg. Nice to hear from someone in Davidson. :)
Hi, Just my on parts of NC. I am an NC native.
I was married in Asheville and lived there for several years. My daughter was born @ Mission Memorial Hospital there 13 yrs ago.
Asheville is lovely. The Great Smokey Mountains are awesome, and there is so much beauty in that area. There seem to be many people there who are real conservationists, and take pride in keeping that part of the state beautiful.
Asheville has a mixture of the "college town" feel (UNC Asheville is there), the "hippie" scene, the "professional" scene, the "rural" feel...kind of all rolled up in one. Downtown is lovely with little cafes and bakeries and a wonderful "Mast General Store" that I love to spend hours in when I go back to visit. The elegant Biltmore Estate is also located there and is a breathtaking site to visit.
The Cherokee Indian Reservation is also nearby.
On the downside, the area has attracted so many folks from out of state (in particular, Florida) that the "native" folks are sometimes a little peeved and do actively verbalize this at times. I remember a bumper sticker trend when I was there that said "Go back to Florida" :lol_hitti
So, it was not an uncommon occurrence to be viewed suspiciously as an "outsider."
I worked as a data entry person back then for a home health agency--I remember being called into my supervisor's office and being repromanded for "not revealing enough about myself" to all the ladies at work there. Weird.
Anyway, despite that strange part of our experience, my husband and I enjoyed living in the area, overall. The weather is nice, in general, and all 4 seasons are very beautiful, in my opinion. There is a lot to do for those who like to be outdoors.
Currently, we live in the piedmont area of NC (High Point, Greensboro, Winston-Salem area). It's nice here as well. We are 3 hours from the Smokey Mountains and 3 hours from the coast. We enjoy all four seasons here as well and love the local "flavor" here. It is a nice combination of southern hospitality and progressive culture. It's a great place to raise a family--or not, if you are single!
Hope this helps those of you NC "shopping."

Welcome to the NC Forum :balloons: We lived in the piedmont many, many years ago. Now we live in the east... very rural, and we love it here. NC offers so much variety:)
hello all, I am relocating to the Charlotte area in about six months. I just recently graduated a LPN program here in Dayton, Ohio. Does any one have any information on LPN to RN programs in Charlotte? any info about places that hire new grads? And just any info in general that may help me? thanx in advance for the responses.
I lived in Wilmington, NC for 9 years before moving back west. I miss it terribly! There are alot of things I miss...Wilmington by Candlelight, the Battleship, the beach, the Christmas flotillas, pig pickins, magnolias, azaleas, the seasonal festivals, the riverfront, my HUGE backyard...and yes, even the hurricanes!
I lived in NC for a year while my husband was in the Marine Corps. I miss it so much! I lived in Jacksonville, and was minutes away for the beach! I think my time in NC was probably the happiest in my life. We were about an hour from Wilmington, and about 2 1/2 hour from Myrtle Beach. Jacksonville was a kinda fast-paced town, and hard to get around in, because there was a lot of traffic, but I really miss it.

I couldn't agree with you more!!! Well, except for the bbq part!! I LOVE NC bbq and I only get it once a year when I go down there to see my dad.
I have been in Wisconsin for almost 24 years,(God, I'm not that old!!!), but my heart will always be in the Tarheel state.
