So you wanna visit North Carolina .....

U.S.A. North Carolina

Published

This thread is intended to provide information to nurses that may want to visit North Carolina and would like to know where to go. Please take a moment to share with us why your part of the State is the best.

For me, I think Asheville is a beautiful community. For one, the people make the community wonderful. There is a sence of honesty here and the people are down to earth and very real. The mountains offer a lot of outside recreational time. If you like being outside, there is hiking, camping, boating and a host of other great activities.

I would be wrong if I did not talk alittle about all the wonderful festivals that take place here in Western North Carolina. There is music, crafts, great food and lots of fun.

Let's hear what makes your part of North Carolina special for visitors.

Specializes in OB, Telephone Triage, Chart Review/Code.

Hey luckyangel...I worked in Jacksonville at Onslow! I miss working there. My daughter had her baby at Naval last October.

Specializes in geriatrics, forensics, behavioral health.

I am a new member, living in Florida now, but selling my house and plan to live in the Asheville area. I miss the mountains, lakes, change of seasons, and yes, maybe the occasional snow!'

I would love to meet others from this area, who may give me some ideas. I work nights, in a Nursing home, and hope once the house is sold, I will be free to spend time there, and look for a home or apartment.

Thanks for any replies and advice, I know one thing I am going to do, is visit the Biltmore Estates.. !!!!

Looking forward meeting many members from the North Carolina area!

Love living close to the beach, even though I am getting ready to have to move closer inland b/c I cant do daily commute.

Hi there all. I am currently residing in Rancho Cucamonga California. If you did not know housing out here is rough the average home in nearly 400k. I decided that it is time to move back to the south. I remember living in N. Carolina when I was stationed at Ft Bragg and loved it. I am a RN with 5+ experience in NICU. What is the average rate for RNs? Money is not an issue I am just curious. I would love to buy a home and live the quiet life if anyone has any tips or ideas pls share. :)

There is a NICU at the hospital where I work, in fact my best friend is starting to work there next month. Pitt County Memorial, having lived in Ft. Bragg, I am sure you have heard of it. Anyway, they start around $18, that goes up with experience.

R.N.s starting at $18 per hour!!?? I think the answer was for LPNs. I started as an LPN in Charlotte at $18 working for a pediatric agency. That's a hair more than I made as an LPN at Children's Hospital in San Diego after being there almost a year.

asheville is a great city, two hospitals and a great need for nursing staff. i have lived here all my life

Thank you for all your warm welcomes!!! I can't wait to make my BIG move to North Carolina!

Looking forward to breathe the good ole Mountain air!

Again, thank you for all the welcomes!!!

I posted this elsewhere but I thought I'd post it here too. My name is Nancy and I am a RN in Fl. I've lived here for the past year (moved from MD) and my husband and I hate it here so we are moving a bit more northward. I just got into UNC-Chapel Hill's MSN program and will be there this summer. We are so excited that we called an agent and put the house up for sale the same day I got my acceptance letter!! I am just happy to be getting out of FL and doing something new. I've heard for ages how NC was an awesome place to raise a family so I am stoked to be coming w/ my 3 yo girl and 11 mo old boy.

Where are some nice, family-friendly, and affordable areas to live? I've heard of Cary and Hillsborough. I am coming to visit for the 1st time in 2 weeks. What are the nicer areas in Durham if I was interested in living there? I see Chapel Hill is rather expensive.

I am planning on working while in school. What are some of the nicer hospitals to work in? I know of the two with the big-dollar top-notch reputations but I'm interested in a package and not just 'reputation'. I want to be where the nurses are mostly glad to come to work (let's face it... there's no 100%), get paid decently and the benefits are good. I have intervs lined up at Wake Med and Durham Reg. with 1 pending at Duke Hosp. Any opinions on these places? Any other place I should check out?

What can I expect pay-wise over there (OB RN w/ BSN and 2+ yrs exp)? I usually work 7p-7a. Are Baylor programs popular over there? How are pool nurses paid? Any place giving reloc or sign-on bonuses? Loan repayment? Are rotating shifts the thing over there or can you get a set shift? I hate to rotate more than anythig else.

I know I asked a lot of questions. Your responses would be appreciated. the best info doesn't come from the recruiters.... it comes straight from the trenches.

Thanks,

Nancy

Hi Nancy, congrats on getting into UNC! I've lived here in Durham for two years now, and I'm enjoying it.

To answer some of your questions...since you'll be commuting to Chapel Hill, I'd recommend southwest Durham. It's got a lot of new stuff going on (like Southpoint mall) and I've found it to be very safe, easy to get around, and it has a good number of newer communities. Check out the Southpoint area for sure. The Hope Valley area is also very nice.

It's a bit more of a trek, but Brier Creek is a new community on the west side of Raleigh that is absolutely beautiful, very up-and-coming, and quite popular with the medical set (especially Duke nurses!)

I don't know anything about Hillsborough, but Cary is lovely. Definitely the best area around, in my opinion. It might be a bit of a drive to get to Chapel Hill, but as far as family-friendly and safety...Cary takes the cake. I'd love to raise my (theoretical) family there.

I'm a nurse at Duke (not in OB, though), and even though I'm a pretty new one, I think it's a great place to work. The girls (and guys!) on my floor are wonderful people who love their jobs (most days!), they've been more than kind to me and willing to answer all my questions, and our manager is close to a saint, I think. They don't pay as much as UNC, but their benefits more than make up for it...plus I'm learning so much being there. The LD unit at Duke is very new, very clean, and gets lots of very high-risk pregnancies...there's a C-section rate that would blow your mind. We did our L&D clinical there. I hear that Durham Regional is the best place to -have- a baby around here, so it may very well be the best place to work, as well.

Can't really help you with the specifics, since every floor at Duke seems to do their staffing differently.

Best of luck with the housing and job search...feel free to email me if you like!
