Day # 8 and I have not even stepped inside of a hospital and so far I've been hit with: Brohncitis, fever (102), and a all round rump kicker virus.

On Thursday we had a three hour break which I ended up sleeping in my car with it turned on and the a/c going which brought my total sleeping within a 96 hour period to 56hours. Thank god i have the holiday to catch up:idea:

I did my first clinical rotation on Monday....by Tuesday evening I had a fever and by Wednesday it was a full blown infection. I will also add that I have not had a single illness in 3 YEARS!!!! Its going to be a long semester! Good luck!

You went to school when you were that sick? Why??

I know the Prof would have sent you straight home at my school. Not only should you have been in bed.....but you put everyone else at risk of catching your illness.

I hope you're feeling better soon!

During my first clinical rotation in Maternity, I started feeling very under the weather. I was feeling lousy early on before clinical, but there was a strict policy about students not missing clinical rotations, so I went to the clinical site anyways. Througout the day, my symptoms became worse. My heart was racing, I had the chills when everyone else was complaining about how hot it was, and I felt like I was getting sick. I felt run-down and sluggish and my whole body hurt. My throat started to feel painful and I felt like I would pass out if I continued on.

Finally, I pulled my instructor aside and told her that I was feeling sick. She told me that there was only a half hour left in the rotation before she would dismiss the students. (She could turn a 2 minute conversation into a 1 hour lecture!) I told her that I felt awful and wanted to leave. She told me that I could leave, but that I would have to report to her what my temperature was when I got home. If it was over 100, then she would allow me to sit the next day of clinical out. (She didn't want me to use one of the hospital's disposable thermometers because she didn't want us "students" wasting supplies!)

When I got home and checked my temp, it was 100.2. I didn't bother calling my instructor because I didn't understand why she would want sick students giving newborns baths or even handling NICU babies, but she was a very stern and abrasive instructor at times. I don't think she believed that I could possibly be sick and she gave all of the students a hard time about everything. I was taken aback by her behavior and immediately emailed her that I would not attend the next day's clinical.

By the time I recovered from my cold and returned to clinical, I received the treatment (from her) that I expected. She was cold, harsh, snappy, and had an attitude towards me. I expected it. Some instructors want to demonstrate to all of their students who has the upper hand, and whose in charge. As the student, I tolerated her demeanor, but ultimately, my skills and demonstrations spoke for me. She gave me an A.

I guess I'm lucky....all my Proff's are nurses first. We had a strict rule about not comming in to lecture, lab or clinical sick. If you had a fever....you were expected to stay at home.

Yep. Last week was only orientation week.. On thursday I was getting a runny nose and a sore throat, so I took some neocitrin before bedtime. Bad idea - I was up all night feeling jittery and had huge stomach pains... ended up vomitting three times that night. I went to school Friday morning for Psych, and left by lunch time. I could still feel the drug in my system by night time. I don't know if it was the extra strength that was just too strong for me, or if I'm allergic to an ingredient. I'm also allergic to codiene, and it gave me similiar side effects. Thankfully i'm feeling a lot better now... need to catch up on some school!

My best friend in the nursing program had her uncle pass away wednesday night, so she was up all night with her family at the hospital..and missed class friday for the funeral. It almost feels like someone is testing us to see if we can handle nursing school.

I'm not actually into the nursing program, but I did start classes last week, and I had a cold by the end of the week, and 4 of my 5 children were sick by Friday, they started back to school 2 weeks ago. And they have 2 different type of sickness' going on, one stomach and one strep throat and cold! UGH! It's also the time of the year, allergies are killing me too!

Feel better everyone!!! I wonder how my school deals with sick students missing classes?

I haven't been sick once and this is my second year of nursing school. Cross my fingers that it continues that way!! I've even been around my sick boyfriend, taking care of him, and didn't catch a thing. :clown:

Cant believe all the sickness going around already...I work in a Dr.'s office and Thursday and Friday were two very busy days with all the acute visits for sore throats, fevers, cough etc. and of course by day 2 guess who else had all the same symptoms..MOIA..glad it was friday and getting a long holiday weekend.

You'd think that as nurses these instructors would give you a break! Why would they want someone who could possibly have a serious virus spreading it around?!! The worst for me was last year with the Noro virus... I'd love to find out who at school passed it to me

We were told Policy is Policy. Last fall when I started nursing school was when the big H1N1 outbreak was going on. For us 1st semester students it wasn't too bad because we only had clinicals 1 day a week. But the rest of the semester has clinicals 3x a week and our school policy is if you miss more than 2 clinicals you are out. So any students that got the flu in those semesters had to hope to get sick on like a Sat. and be over it by mid week when clinicals started or they were dropped from the program. The school maintained that policy was policy when it was brought up that people getting it were sick for like a week and the rules in place if you even suspected you had it was that you had to stay out for a min. period of time. I ended up getting sick but thankfully it didn't last longer than 1 clinical week. My daughter got sick also and my husband had to miss 3 days of work to stay with her, (he is self employed but no employees so we had to take a loss those 3 days) than she ended up getting a secondary infection from the flu after that. It was a nightmare.

That is ridiculous. A few of us got the flu last year, and we weren't allowed to come to clinical or class. The rule is you have to be afebrile for 24 hours prior to the start of clinical/class. I missed one clinical and two mandatory classes. The makeups were hellacious (especially when I had a lovely case of bronchitis and sinus infection post flu) but they were offered.

What clinical site wants a bunch of flu cases wandering around taking care of their patients??? That doesn't make sense.

And why are you guys already getting sick? Classes just started back for most of us. You need to take care of yourselves before something nasty gets a hold of you
