...unvaccinated status as a selling point for recruiting nurses.

Wow.

I live in a red state in a very large city. We have low vaccination rates and high numbers of infected. Rural hospitals are probably also struggling, but we have had days where we had no ICU beds in cities like Houston and Dallas that have MANY hospitals. We even ran out of pediatric ICU beds for awhile in the DFW area. Adequate staffing has been a problem, even here. My friend who works in a pediatric trauma unit said they were full of pedi Covid patients, but were at least lucky enough to have FEMA-provided nurses. They were lucky.

BTW, complaining about "arrogance and contempt," then posts this:

"I realize that challenges your very big liberal brain....but try very hard to wrap it around this. "

Damn right I did.  She has made several posts attacking and mocking people, especially Republicans.  I responded in kind.

In hindsight I prolly shouldn't have suggested large hospitals aren't challenged because I certainly know they are, just in very different ways.  What I am trying to describe, is my rural hospital is desperate.  Every day we face the reality that by losing one more nurse we might have to close.  CLOSE!  So that's why I defend the places that aren't mandating a vaccine.  We are among them, unfortunately.  I'm not thrilled that it may make us a magnet for the antivaxxer minded nurses out there in the world, but if we don't keep our doors open we help no one.

I have a cousin who is an RT in Texas at a huge hospital and we speak often of the challenges y'all are facing.  He's so burned out and has really lost his patience with the antivax crowd.  I get it, trust me, I wish I knew what to say to them to convince them.

Stay safe down there!

Maybe you should provide your version of the information I know nothing about?

I'm pretty sure the antivaxxers were listening to someone that if they had bothered to educate themselves even slightly and rid themselves of their biases to liberal big brains like Dr Fauci etc, and stop worshipping their hypocrisy as a religion, they might not be in the position they're currently in!

I suggest you introduce them to the library a historical repository of information that has been in vogue for millenniums, that contains solutions to problems before they arise. And it's free which might be appealing!

I just did.  Clearly you aren't receptive.

Oh, you are comparing your liberal big brain to Fauci?  LOL  Well, you certainly think a lot of yourself.....don't you?

You know, I've never had a friend, nor a patient, that responded well to being treated like they were stupid, ignorant, and uninformed.  Just sayin'.

I can't help how you feel about yourself or how you feel about comments?

And thank you very much for comparing my liberal big brain to Dr Fauci's. I'm considerably taller so that might account for the size. But, I always thought that every container only contains what is deposited? He's got me beaten in that dept by miles I know. He's also a gentleman and polite and very likeable. I'm not sure I'm any of those things. But, I do have a bigger, heavier brain I'm sure. Larger container anyway!

Wow.  Do you understand the written word?  Because YOU compared yourself to Fauci....not I.

And how I feel about myself or comments?  I wasn't responding to any feelings about anything.  I was suggesting that your contempt for others might be a barrier in convincing them you are correct....about anything.

But.....carry on.  I have lived on this earth long enough to know that I have as much chance to get you to treat others with courtesy as I do of convincing anyone to take a vaccine.  Both are hopeless ventures.

Yup, you got me. I am a villainous bugger!

About the library, you know the place with upright shelves, containing books and lots of 'Be Quiet' signs with people speaking a funny language to other people containing the many letters of SSSCCCHHH to noisy people who definitely don't understand them, I was wondering, was I presumptious in assuming that you knew what I was talking about? I apologize if there aren't many in the neighborhoods you are so staunchly defending ??

Hmmm, sincere question?  Orrrr.......I didn't respond the first time and you're dying to use that clever dig?

My guess is the latter.

I wasn't really aware people still use libraries.  I guess if you aren't clever enough to source what you need online you might still go ........ or if you were born back when Christ was a child.

My sincere response to your insincere question is that I was rather privileged growing up and had all my book-wormed heart desired.  But there aren't a lot of libraries in this very liberal and unvaccinated area of my state.  We're incredibly rural and while the state library system was one of the first ever available online, that's not much help to people who don't have much for internet service.

Go ahead.....take more jabs at them.  Rather than look down on them for their lack of sophistication, and treat them like they are ignorant and stupid, I've found incredibly intelligent, deep thinking and feeling humans who have some issues with trust.  I'll take them over your type any day, even unvaccinated.

PS:  It's "presumptuous".  If you are going to attempt to belittle someone for their intelligence, you best not make any stupid mistakes, regardless how small.  Just sayin'.   ?

Sooner or later you will understand the relationship with the library comment and the upsurge.

Don’t worry, you'll get there eventually. Think about what a library is and what it's used for and especially a community that has little need for internet service!

Also, about yourself? Why would any intelligent person remove themself from society's bounties to a community with patchy internet, minimum services and maximum difficulties? Solitude? Character development? Difficulties coping with a competitive society and people?

And the only people who have issues with trust, are those who are selfish and unable interlectually to understand the dynamics of relationships. It's naive and speaks volumes about their character! Eg movie.... 2nd rate director, actors and script..... Do you expect a good movie? And I can't be expected to guide you to insight. You either stop being selfish and emotional about words and objectively think about what you are reading or take the safe path of retreat and isolation!

It's an incredibly huge problem we have, this inability to project big picture issues or read between the lines!

So, mock and ridicule all you please.  But understand that patients having a medical emergency prolly don't care too much about their nurse's vax status, they just want to survive.

The next closest hospital to my community is a couple hour flight over the tallest mountain range on the continent.  Our local hospital has no available ICU beds and no nursing staff to care for more patients.  Anchorage hospitals are at near capacity for adults and have no pediatric beds or staff available.

If people want to survive they should probably try masking and vaccinating because the health system is at its limit. It's a couple hour wait just to get a test in the Fairbanks area these days.

I guess the patients is state run facilities might be fortunate to have staff.....period.

What a detestable bunch of comments in this thread.  Y'all aware that there are facilities that are operating with skeleton crews?  Do you get it?  I'm in a small CAH that has come perilously close to having to close our doors twice because we didn't have enough staff to put the minimum number on the floor, we barely kept our ER open.  We're 330 air miles from any other hospital that can accept patients.  So we are in no rush to mandate the vaccine for our staff because it's a selling point for traveling nurses and the community we serve understands that.

A friend of mine is an ER manager in a Nebraska ER and her facility is one of the many that have mandated the vaccine.  They are currently in a staffing crisis and as her younger, child-bearing-age, vaccine hesitant nurses find jobs elsewhere, she'll be lucky to keep her doors open.

So, mock and ridicule all you please.  But understand that patients having a medical emergency prolly don't care too much about their nurse's vax status, they just want to survive.

THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH! I am beyond sick and tired of the attitude of these pompous, arrogant, know-it-all, demeaning, criticizing people who refuse to even comprehend that there might be a point of view other than their own. I'm tired of getting accused of wanting to make people sick by not getting vaccinated--we have worn masks and all the necessary PPE, we've done isolation, etc etc. etc as required.

I'm an Infection Control Nurse in long-term care and if the vaccine mandate goes into effect we will lose at least three nurses--including myself. That's over 100 years of experience. We will also lose several medication aides--who we utilize when we are short of nurses. We are already short staffed. Management staff are already working floor hours. We are working with several staffing agencies. There just are no nurses. And how is that going to help residents or patients in any setting? And ask yourself--with your attitudes, rudeness, etc about the vaccine...would you want to work with you???

You are clearly clueless about where the challenges lay.  Your arrogance and contempt for anyone who thinks differently from you are incredibly revealing.

It's not the Republican states that are challenged, it's the rural areas of America that are struggling.  I realize that challenges your very big liberal brain....but try very hard to wrap it around this.  Small, remote hospitals are having a very difficult time sourcing needed staff.  We don't have the money for the huge hourly wages, thousands of dollars in bonuses, and even those of us that do have money are still challenged getting people to move somewhere remote.

My hospital has always used travelers, and about half of them liked it so much here they would accept a permanent assignment.  But with big facilities paying out big COVID money the travelers aren't looking to take a permanent job right now.  I get it.  I have several friends who travel and their attitude is "I gotta get the cash while I can."

So, my recommendation to you is that when you think you are so brilliant that you can mock people that you know nothing about.....stop.....because there's probably information you don't have.

Yes! What this RN said, 100000 times over!

If you care about others take the vaccine  period, tired of listening to you defend your stance and that mandates will hurt patients and your facilities but is it not you that is the problem? Mandates are trying to get a handle on the pandemic. Won’t the short staffing due to mandates be at least half because you choose not to take the vaccine, at what lengths are you (unvaccinated people) willing to go to ‘stand your ground’ in the face of overwhelming facts in favor of the vaccine.  An infection control nurse that won’t take the covid vaccine, is it true. Not mocking just appalled and I care about people.

What percentage of vaccinated people are subsequently hospitalized for or died from COVID

You can look up your states stats but approximately 0.3% death from covid in patients that are vaccinated.
