So I kind of messed up

Published

So I am getting ready for bsn nursing school to start in the summer. One of the things that was required was a drug test. I took it without any hesitation, since I do not take any drugs. However, I did messed up before the drug test. Because of all the stress of moving, getting ready for nursing school, and personal life things my mother suggested I take one her lorazepam pill to help me calm down. I took it without hesitation because it a pretty universally used drug.

The part that I messed up at is that I took it before the drug test and it showed up. I obviously have no documentation saying that I have a prescription. So now I am kicking myself in the head and I don't know what to do.

What are the consequences for this? Will I be prevented to start? Are there any legal problems I should worry about? Can I retake it to show I am not an addict or have a problem with drugs? I am thinking of e-mailing my programs director to explain my situation and tell him "I am an idiot, I am not an addict, and I am very sorry. Please don't kick me out". Thoughts?

This may sound a little harsh, but you are NOT nursing material. You took a controlled substance without a prescription. And to top this off, your mother gave it to you.

XNavyCorpsman, please make a nice poster of your statement and post it on your mirror so you will see it everyday. You too are human (I hope) and when you make a mistake, please read your statement. I would rather work alongside nurses like OP who admit a mistake than one like you who will cover it and not learn.

Can a nursing school report this to police?

Amen MrNurse. It's THAT kind of nurse I would never want taking care of me or my family. You'll be fine OP. I will say a quick prayer for your situation. God knows the truth.

Tic-Tacs lol. Great comparison. You should be a writer :-)

I hate posters like you. She has a caring heart, therefore she IS nursing material. And I'd take any bet that half the nurses out there are using themselves nowadays. Sorcery will be rampant in the end times.

OP has no Rx for this drug. THAT IS a problem. She is right to be worried.

Lorazepam (Advan) is an anti-anxiety medication and could also be used to treat seizures. Many people (mire than you know) do take that...in some cases including nurses. No one will penalize you for taking Lorazepam! It is not their business to go into your confidential medical history to see if you have a prescription or not. You are worried for nothing! This is not Mommy's fault. YOU took the pill. Would you take a controlled substance from anyone handing them out because you seem stressed?

Thanks elkpark, it exactly as it sounds. A mistake. I didn't have any bad ill and my mom was just looking out for me (she's feeling terrible about everything right now). I thought it was just the equivalent of taking an advil.
The reason I took the medication is because I believed it was a very generic prescription for anxiety. That's the only reason. I was obviously wrong and won't make another mistake like that.

Emphasis on the word "prescription," which legally means you cannot take it if it was not YOUR prescription. And that goes for meds that are not controlled substances. I'd say that there are very few people who haven't at one time or another taken another person's prescribed meds. But most people are not subject to drug screens. As nurses, we are often screened after we have accepted an offer of employment. Once hired, we can also be randomly screened, screened if there are problems with narcotic counts on our floors/units, or if we are injured on the job (that happened to me once when I hurt my back-was sent straight to employee health and required to submit to a urine screen). So we take a bigger risk than the average Joe when we take drugs for which we have no prescription.

Sounds like you won't make this mistake again. Maybe they will cut you some slack. If not, you will likely be able to apply and be accepted to another school. Good luck!

Re test!!!

I don't understand why this would be an option. A retest would not eradicate the first result.

Try reading some of his other posts.... He thinks he is all high and mighty by posting ignorant statements then hides and never returns. As a nurse manager I set these people straight real quick.

I'm baffled as to how you can claim to be a nurse yet get such egregiously false "advice"!
