Well today is Aug 23 and I've read that several of you were starting school today. How was it?
We started today and it wasn't as bad as I expected. Actually it wasn't bad at all. The instructors seemed nice and appeared to care how well we do. Most of the day was spent going over stuff with only some lecture time. The one scary thing they said was that school gets harder each semester. The one thing that was a little disappointing was that I thought our 1 hour courses (Pharmacology and Assessment) were strictly skills labs but they are lecture and we have to make time to go to the lab after class hours (bummer). Hope everyone else had a good first day too (other than a tired butt from sitting so long):)
Today (8/24) was my first day. It went very well. We had 3 1/2 hours of skills lab. We practice vital signs on each other, transferring patients, changing beds and bed baths. We had a drug calc practice quiz. We have 2 weeks of skills, then lecture and clinicals start. Overall, I was very pleased with the instructors and facility. My only compaint was the commute, which took me an hour between drive time, parking, the bus, and then walking to the school of nursing. Guess it'll be a good time to relect on my day and listen to tunes.
First day is always easy and fun, the better question to ask is "how was your first month?"
My first day was far from fun or easy! We dove right into the material that we'll be tested on next Monday, only a week after starting!
We had:
- Our first assignment due in the box before class started
- A 1 hour lecture intro to the clinical learning lab
- A 3 hour fundamentals theory lecture
- Our 1 hour pharmacology lecture (we do pharm in 3 one credit courses, so it's only 1 hour/week)
And today (day 2), we had:
- A 4 hour fundamentals theory lecture
- A 2 hour lab practice
Yesterday I was in class from 0800-1600 with a lunch break. My buttocks are very sore from sitting so long. We went over the syllabus, discussed clinicals, practiced a head to toe exam, freaked out about how much more work we have to do this semester(I'm in 3rd semester of ADN program) The best part was seeing everyone after summer break. Today, I was in class from 10-1230 then 1400-1600, My butt is even more sore from sitting. It is going to be a lot of fun and very interesting. I start clinicals on friday 0630-1500!
Today was my first day of my LVN program and it was great though a little rocky. Almost arrived late because of traffic (I HATE being late) but made it at 8 on the DOT. Was disappointed because our actual teacher wasn't there we had a sub the FIRST day, ugh, though I'm sure it was an emergency on her part.
We had a four hour skills lab doing vitals which was good but I felt a little cheated because besides watching a 15 minute video over how to do a vital sign scenario we got NO teaching on doing the vitals?! I mean the other teachers came around and helped anyone who needed but i couldn't believe they didn't even do an in person demonstration over blood pressure. I guess they think vitals are simple which obviously temperature and pulse and stuff are but I feel getting the hang of a blood pressure can be tricky!
We've had two days of actual class now. There are about 22 of us, and we'll have the same classes together for the next couple of years for the BSN which is a brand new program. The faculty seems pretty relaxed, and I don't see it as being that bad of a deal. I've kind of enjoyed it. I know this is just the start, but I've looked through the assignments and books. I'm cool with it all. In fact, I don't sense any of the stress that a lot of people on this message board exude from others in my class or those in other programs (ADN, ADN-BSN).

Half of them will fail out or drop out in the first skills test. ;p
