Silent birth? Anyone see one?

Okay well Katie, Tom Cruise's fiancee' is going to have a baby any minute now, and I am very curious if anyone has ever witnessed the "silent birth" that scientologists strive for.

I can't imagine a woman not moaning in pain during delivery. Can you? Ever seen anything like it?

I'm a pretty quiet laborer and birther :D. My first, the nurses kept poking their head in to see if I was still there. I think once they thought the room was empty, cuz one of them peeked in and got a surprised look on her face. "yes, she's in there," she said just outside the door.

Are my kids any more well-adjusted than noisy- or routine-birth moms???? HA!! No difference there (and they're now teens). :D

I had a "silent" birth, but it wasn't planned to be one. I had a very long and stressful labor with #1 and about halfway through I just forbade anyone from making even a peep, it was too overwhelming to hear voices. Now, when it came time to push, there was lots of talking but up until that point I couldn't handle it.

Wow, thanks for all the interesting replies. I think that the delivery should be quiet if the mom wants it. The mom should have it her way, whatever way that is.

Marie, you are hilarious. You should get extra points in school for being so funny.:lol2:

Congrats to Tom and Katie. However odd he may be, may they be happy anyway. I bet little Suri is going to be a looker!

The point of silent birth for Scientologists is their belief that an infant is a kind of blank slate and that things they hear during the birth and in the early days get "recorded" on their mental "tapes" and cause problems later in life. They also believe surgeries should be silent and that no one should talk around an anesthetized or unconscious person.

I'll keep any further opinions about Scientology to myself, but I cannot wait until the day that Katie Holmes has had enough of the domineering nut case that she managed to hook up with.

I have witnessed a couple and they were beautiful. To each his or her own.

A bit off topic, but I still can't believe Moby is a Scientologist. I love Moby.

Hey, how funny is it that Brooke Shields and Tom Cruise both had their much "anticipated" daughters on the same day after all the controversy and feuding! lol Tom has irritated me but i hope the baby does well and that Katie stays well and healthy and double that sentiment for Brooke who must be worried over any sign of the baby blues turning into more...

I've seen hypnobirthing work as a sort of "silent birth" (not a lot of yelling) and Christian Scientists are actually quite quiet in birth. But this "Silent Birth" idea, I think it was a little stupid. Katie could "vocalize" as in hypnobirthing, but my problem is that the period of quietness is extended quite well beyond the antenatal period.

I'd be concerned about bonding with the baby. That's how parents bond with the baby (one of the ways). Tom has just proven how stupid he is. First with gaining access to u/s equipment (a piece of equipment which needs a prescription - how'd he skirt that law???) and now he's messing with the bonding process with his stupid priniples. With all the u/s'ing by an untrained operator, I sure hope that kid doesn't have any long term damages. Of course if it did, she wouldn't be taken to the doctor. :angryfire

Personally i think he snacks on paint chips.

I'd tell Tom to urinate a baseball and ask him to be silent about it and then see what he says. :lol2: Poor Katie.

Oh LAWDY you make me:lol2: :lol2: :lol2: Marie!

I've heard a lot of people who said they had one, or bashed Tom, (not that I don't want to either) but being that we are nurses and need to respect everyones opinion and desires for how they want their delivery to go. How would I as a L&D nurse help them through the process. Other than just wait long enough for the body to do what it is going to do anyway and catch the baby when it falls out?
