Silent birth? Anyone see one?

Okay well Katie, Tom Cruise's fiancee' is going to have a baby any minute now, and I am very curious if anyone has ever witnessed the "silent birth" that scientologists strive for.

I can't imagine a woman not moaning in pain during delivery. Can you? Ever seen anything like it?

According to his interview with Diane Sawyer on Fri night, the slient birth is not silent for her. He states that she can yell as loud as she needs and can have drugs. It's the other people in the room before, during and after the birth that must be quiet. Does jumping on a couch make noise?:lol2: On the show he also admitted to have her hooked up to US everyday. Even after everything that was said by MD', nurses and others that have experience with US's, he continued to use it. Katie needs to listen to her daddy, if she marries that nut God help her.

How weird is it that Brooke was down the hall giving birth at the same time!

I really wish her well, I admire her for coming out about her PP blues. Tom needs to shut up and grow up.

I've only attended one birth whose parents were Scientologists; they just didn't want alot of extra noise, and only wanted us to speak when it was absolutely necessary. Then there was some shoulder dystocia, then the mom hemorrhaged the largest amount I have EVER seen, and that was pretty much shot to .

I work in a birth center, so I think our births are quieter by nature--it's just a smaller facility with fewer instruments that go beep, fewer people to make noise, that sort of thing. It was a nice reminder of how sometimes it is easy to say mindless things, just to fill the "space" or just to encourage mom or dad, without really meaning it (does that make sense?). It made me more aware of talking too much or too loudly at other births. It was a nice learning experience to me. But they didnt' insist on total silence after the birth; it was more like they just wanted really quiet, positive, thoughtful comments.

I'm sure that, just like every religion, there are freaks and fundamentalists, and then there are the normal joes.

What's a US? And Scientologists wouldn't go to an MD if something was wrong? Isn't the same true with Christian Science followers, too?

Correct me if I am wrong but it seems like my OB prof. who was a nurse midwife told our class something about the Navajo women holding onto a birthing pole standing up and making no noise. I dont think that is the same thing as what Tom Cruise is talking about, but I thought it seemed interesting.

Like any expectant parents, I wish Tomand Katie a safe and happy birth, and sincerely hope that their expectations are realized.

But Tom's public discussions of this pregnancy have me worried that he is overly controlling, and has his wishes first and foremost in his mind, not the health and well-being of his partner and baby.

He has publicly stated that he straps the U/S probe to Katie's belly literally 24 hours a day to "monitor" the baby, but he worries about a little noise in the delivery room? What an (uninformed) nut job!

Yea, the guy seems like a real idiot.

I had my second child "natural" and I couldn't keep from screaming and wailing...I was glad to have that epidural with my third one.

I agree with keeping noise to a minimum during labor and delivery. With my first birth there were at least a dozen people in the room while I was pushing yelling "PUSH! PUSH! PUSH!" What happened to introducing yourself to the patient and explaining why you're there? This was not an emergency situation and I have no idea why all those people felt they had to be there. I didn't know then that I had a right to kick out anyone who didn't belong in the birthing room.

I have never seen a "silent" birth, but plenty of very quiet ones. They are generally the midwife patients whom we use little intervention with, i.e. doppler only.

When it is so quiet in a room, I feel like I'm invading their space enough just using the noisy doppler, especially in the Jacuzzi.

I prefer these births. They seem much more magical.

here is a site that talks about silent birth: http://www.silentbirth.org/

I am not a scientologuist, know nothing about it, have no opinions pro or con, just passing this along.

Very informative site. Thanks for passing that along. Seems silent birth is not much different than some of the births I have seen. Until the visitors come in anyway. :trout:

We've had several Muslim couples request that everyone is silent until Dad whispers a prayer in baby's ear. Really, a very moving experience.

I heard that Katie had an epidural.......when she conceived!:chair::roll
