SIL vomiting Feces

My SIL has colon CA. She has been vomiting for the last 2 days. I guess today she started vomiting feces. I have a problem. My final is Monday. She is determined to make it through Christmas.

I know you can't tell me if SHE will last that long, but how long have pts. lasted who started doing this?

I realize this is a critical situation and I need to be there for my husband. Today is the 14th aniversary of his father's death from CA.

They live almost 300 miles away, and I just gave &275.00 to my new landlord as surety for a new place to live. My husband wants to be there for his brother. I want to be there for my husband.

I'm sorry this is rambling but I don't know what to do.

Thanks for reading!!

Can you get in touch with the instructor about the final? They will usually give you an alternate date or way to take the exam for an emergency like this. They did for me when my FIL died.

Is her death iminent? Is she under hospice care? If not she needs to get to the emergency room stat.

I would definately talk to the instructors if you absolutely have to go out of town. Only you know what you can live with. You don't want to do anything you might regret if you put school ahead of family, but you've come so far no need to sacrifice all that hard work.

Sorry you're going through this. Good luck.

My SIL is in the the hospital. My instructor lives out of town. The problem is our cars are old and not very reliable. So if he breaks down there is no way for me to get him.

Right now his truck has a flat tire and no spare. So if he does go, I am left w/o a vehicle for at least the weekend.

I sent an email to my instructor and have called another hoping to talk to her. I will keep you posted.

Thanks for your advice!!

Please keep in mind that every person is different-

When I was a hospice nurse, I had two pts (one with colon ca, the other with ovarian) who both developed fecal emesis.

We were able to control this w/ meds and having the pts on clear liquids only.

Each pt lived for approx 1 week after they developed it.

My SIL is doing much better. Saturday, they were going to do a colectomy to get rid of the blockage. Monday, whatever was caausing the blockage is now gone...no surgery.

I took my MS2 Final at 0800 Monday Morning. I got an 82% on the final and an 84% in the class.

My SIL insists that she will be around for another 3 months. I believe her. My husband thinks she will be gone in three weeks because that's what the Dr. says.

Anyway, I wanted to thank you all for your thoughts and kindness.

Have a great Holiday season and a Joyful New Year!

Glad to hear that your SIL is doing a little better. Glad to hear you were able to take your final OK. My prayers are with you and your family.

No doctor can or should go around saying how long a patient is going to live. People can surprise you.

I've seen that happen. Blockages from Ca. can come and go. Here's hoping she's able to enjoy Christmas and New Year's as much as her health permits!

Believe your SIL. It's amazing how some know when they're going to pass away. Good job on your finals. You and your family will be in my prayers. -Andrea

Glad to hear your SIL is not having the emesis, perhaps she will last longer than the docs say. Congrats on your final exam! Prayers are with you!
