My original post was moved to a premium page and as I am not a premium member as of yet, I was unable to respond to the original post. I did however include it on the bottom of this reply.

God bless you all for your words of encouragement and prayers. Please continue to pray for her!

Hi all,

just wanted to say thanks to all who responded to my thread about my very sick puppy Frex. I was not able to get through one post without crying. It is good to know there are so many aminal lovers out there.

Frex made it through the surgery this morning and is alert and walking around a bit. The Vet, Dr. Smith said her uterus should normally be about the size of a pencil or little finger and hers was as big as his wrist! He also said her ovaries, which normally should be the size of a lima bean, were as big as a large plum. She was so full of infection.

It is still touch and go for now, because of the sespis, but she made it through the surgery and that is a biggie!!!!

I know this is probably not the place to discuss dogs, but I just got home from the Vets. Seems my dog, ( part Border collie, part beagle) is septic. The Vet kept her overnight for IV antibiotics, and will do surgery in the AM. I knew she had not been feeling good for a couple of weeks, but never assumed her illness had progressed this far.

She has been drinking a lot of water for a while now, and urinating a lot. Even in areas she never goes, such as my living room. That should have alerted me to something. I thought she was just jealous of the cats or something. I would scold her and she would hang her head, and everything would be okay for a few days.

Yesterday, she was really tired and kinda lethargic. She was running a little temp, (her nose was warm). I gave her 1 tylenol and she perked up a bit. This morning she could barely walk. So I took her to the Vet. He said he temp was really high and she was passing a foul smelling drainage, which I thought was urine. Come to find out she has an infection in her uterus and is septic.

The Vet said it was touch and go for now and she might not pull through. She has never been spayed and never been pregnant. She is a house dog and a great watch dog. She alerted me to an intruder breaking into my home a couple of years ago.

I told my daughter I don't know how I could have missed this. I mean after all, I am a nurse. I am feeling so bad right now, and so sad. My daughter will be a basket case if something happens to her.

If any of you think like I do, that God takes care of animals too, please say a prayer for her. Her name is Freckles (Frex, for short). She is 10 1/2 yrs old and very special to me.

Sorry about the length............................Nursepenny

I don't know the words to tell you how sorry I am for the loss of your beloved Frex. I am so sad for you. :o You'll be in my thoughts and prayers. Hugs to you...

:crying2: so sorry about your baby Frex. I had a terrible time for a while when we lost our Penny. Time heals but its ok to mourn your loss. It is as real a loss as you would feel losing a human loved one. Take care.

Oh Penny! I am so so sorry for your loss. I am sure your heart is broken, it is awful to lose a friend and family member. It sounds like you and the Vet did everything possible for her. Did your vet say how she could have gotten such a terrible infection? And how did you explain this to your daughter, and how is she handling it? So sorry, (((((HUGS)))))

I'm SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooo sorry to hear Frex passed away. I know how profoundly this affects you and yours (and a lot of others here, as you've seen, are affected as well because we love our pets so much and vice versa).

There's a wonderful short article in this month's Guideposts addressing the question, Do pets go to heaven? Those with pets are pretty sure they do! The writer explores this subject more, and with biblical references. It was comforting for me to read it.

We grieve with you, knowing how much it hurts to lose her. You loved Frex a lot -- and what's important is, she KNEW you did!! -- and you did all you could, truly, to help her. Bless you. -- D

:crying2: :crying2: penny, i am so sorry for your loss. i am thinking of you!

I'm so sorry for your loss. I read the "good news" then the "bad news" post and can't stop crying.

Hugs to you and your family.

He said it happens a lot with older dogs that have not been spayed. I had no idea anything like this could happen...or I would have had her fixed years ago. At one time I thought about breeding her, but decided not to, and just kept putting off getting her fixed. Thought I was saving her from needless surgery, I guess.

Hindsight is 20/20. Too bad foresight isn't.

My daughter is very upset, needless to say. She went to work, said she would go crazy just sitting around here. I, on the other hand called out. Just didn't feel up to trying to work. Didn't tell them what happened, just that I was not able to work tonite. Good thing our census is kinda low right now.

The Vet said the type of infection she had was tricky to diagnose, until it was almost to late. He said they had taken her outside to use the bathroom and she walked around a little, then just laid down and stopped breathing. She loved the outside so much. I am glad if she had to go, it was in a place she loved so much.

Oh Penny! That is soooo sad. What will you do with her now? My neighbor has her beloved pets cremated and scatters the ashes, another is keeping hers to be buried with her. Sorry if the questions I ask are macabre, just interested.

Penny,

I am crying right along with you - hope you can feel the support.

Leslie

The Vet is going to take care of everything for me. I didn't think I could handle it. I have buried several pets over the years, but I have never had one affect me as this one has. Maybe it is because I had her for so long.

We were able to see her and took some of her favorite toys to go with her. Our Vet was as visibly upset as we were. He is a very caring man.

A few years ago we had to have a cat put down due to feline luekemia, and he was great then also.
