I have been applying for jobs since I got licensed by in June. I got my first interview 2 weeks ago for surgery center. This is not my first choice, but it is a job. The job is only 1 day a week and it conflicts with my current none nursing job. I was called today for a second interview and arranged to come back next week and meet the doctors. I feel like I am wasting their time and mine. My Husband is encouraging me to go back. Any suggestions?

So it conflicts with your non nursing job. Well what do you want to end up doing; that job or nursing? The only way to start sometimes is by going in slowly. But I bet once you start you will find them scheduling you in more then you can handle. You need to ask yourself; nursing or not.

Go back. Any nursing experience will help you eventually find your dream job in nursing. AS long as you are working in another field you are not working towards your goal. At least this job will get you on the right path.
We don't all get to start out in our dream nursing job, but gaining experience will help get you there.

Nursing experience is nursing experience. You won't get nursing experience at your non-nursing job. And nursing jobs aren't dropping out of the sky. One day a week is a good start.

Do what you want and what makes you happy. The economy sucks and eventually nursing jobs will be more plentiful, and you'll have more options and more desirable options. If your current "non-nursing" job is more enjoyable, then stay there and wait. Although, the other posters do raise valid points. Is there any way to do both jobs? Cake and eat it too? :) Good luck, I'm sure everything will work out if you do what makes you happy.

Absolutely go for the next interview!
Guess what you get to put down on your resume for all the other jobs you'd then be applying to? An RN position!
I had 2 PRN RN positions that I was able to put down before I finally landed interviews and job offers. Neither of them were even in acute care, or really patient care, but they were positions with an RN title that used my license. It made me feel so much more confident about submitting my resume to places. And yours would be in a surgery center! You would actually be using nursing skills there :)

If you don't go back, you burn that bridge. Burning bridges is never good. Its true that you need nursing experience, but you also have to pay the bills. Will your non nursing job work with you? If so that's great. But if taking the job means you can't pay your bills anymore( who can on 1 day a week check?), then nevernmind. You need nursing experience, but not at the price of your stability;)

I agree! Yeah you need nursing experience, but you also have to keep the heat on this winter. See if both jobs will work with you.. Good luck!

I'll beat a dead horse here, but go back for the interview. I don't know what your non-nursing job is, but unless you are making bank at it AND they can't deal with changing things up one day a week, it is an easy decision. Plus, if you got a full time job, you'd be leaving anyway, right?
Personally, unless I was making significantly more than a full-time nurse in my other job, I would take the nursing job that gives me experience and find another, lower-paying job to pay the bills until I could get into nursing full-time, if my current employer wouldn't work with me.
Thanks for everyones wonderful input! I can pull some strings at my current job and do both. I will take a pay cut starting out as a nurse, but it has been a dream to a nurse. I will go back for the second interview!
