Shoe recs for clinicals

Hey y'all,

I start nursing school this spring and for my budget, I need to research good shoes to buy for clinicals. The requirement is black or white rubber or leather with closed toe/heel and not clogs. I prefer white shoes and comfort is a huge thing for me (high arches, wide feet, and knee pain). Any recommendations? So far, I've found a pair of geriatric looking New Balance shoes that have the Rollerbar technology to prevent any ankle wobbling and are amazingly comfortable to stand in.

As someone who has been working as a nurse for almost a decade, New Balance shoes have the comfort and dependability to get me through long shifts that are spent mostly on my feet.

Other considerations are Nurse Mates, Cherokee Rockers, and SAS.

Thank you! I'll check those out, too.

Sanitas are great and if you look around you can snag them for great deals. I think clogdepot.com is where I got mine.

Usually no clogs refers to no open backed clogs. If you can, Danksos or Sanitas are very comfortable (break them in first!), but definitely clarify with your nursing department before you spend the money if you choose to go that route.

If the ones you mentioned are comfortable get them and do not worry about appearances. Once you graduate you can dump them.

I would not get white shoes for the hospitals. Dirt and grime is going to show up on them more and might end up looking unprofessional over time

Cheap ones, if your school is like ours, and you have to wear white shoes.

Mine will be burnt the moment clinicals are done. Not because they are gross but because they are white. Who the hell buys white shoes?? Look at Discount & Clearance Clothing, Shoes, Accessories and More | 6pm.com

I found some Reeboks with a non-slip sole and a wipeable (word?) surface. You don't want material like canvas that fluid can soak into. Like an nclex question, don't overthink this. You'll have more important things to concern yourself coming up soon.

I wouldn't cheap out on shoes. I love my Cherokees... they are so comfortable. Many students in my class have Dansko's. I would say that it is worth the investment for expensive shoes. If you splurge now, you will probably have the shoes for a long time. My Dansko's have lasted me 3 years and are still going strong.

I had to wear white shoes for my school too. I made the mistake of getting some cheap payless shoes. The biggest mistake ever because my feet, knees, and back would ache at the end of clinicals. Get something that is comfortable and within a price range you can afford for now and when you graduate, you can get something better. Save yourself from the pain!

How do you break them in? I've been wearing a pair to do small errands around town for months, and still don't find them comfortable.

My nursing school required white. Dumbest. Rule. Ever! Anyway, I bought nursemates and they lastesd a year, and looked decent because I could wipe the blood and dirt off. They did scoff over time, though. I also had to change the insole for the final semester. Can anyone recommend a good insole? I bought a bad one, and my toes were numb after the shift, and hurt for days with neuropathic pain! I was afraid I had permanent damage, but I'm okay.
