SFSU/Canada College BSN Applicant Thread, Fall 2009 Cohort

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hello Everybody,

I thought I would make a thread for those of us who will be applying to the SFSU/Canada College BSN program, fall 2009 cohort. Maybe we could share our stats, frustrations, thoughts about the nursing profession, etc.

As for me, I have two prerequisites left to complete. I am taking one right now, and I will take the last one during spring 2009. I anticipate that I will have about a 3.7 GPA in the prerequisite courses.

I have also met two of the supplementary criteria. With as competitive as it is, I know that it's pretty much a coin toss as to whether I get in or not. I'm just hoping for a little luck.

Good luck to all of you.

Thank you everyone, for the congratulations.

xtine009, my status did not change on the SFSU website. It still says that my application is under review. The letter I received was sent directly from Canada College though, unlike the previous ones that were sent from the main campus. So, maybe it will update later.

I wouldn't lose hope just yet, not even. I heard that it's a drawn out process with the wait list. People will be notified here and there as spaces open up. I think you still have a good chance. I'm rooting for you!

I feel like this is too good to be true though. I'm waiting for someone to contact me to tell me that they made a mistake, hehe.

I got my acceptance letter too! I moved up on the waitlist!!! Ecstatic! Best of luck to everyone else!!! Let me know what happens!

katwag87, congratulations on your acceptance. Now all we need is an acceptance for xtine009.

yeah Xtine, a lot of people move up one the waitlist after the first day of nursing school when people don't show up.

Katwag, did you receive a phone call too, or just the letter?

I was totally blown away when I got my letter, because I wasn't even expecting it. I always thought they just call people who are on the wait list. I can't wait to start the program though.

Congrats katwag! You & Torasamu should make sure to give your real names to each other, so when you meet up at Canada you'll already have a friend... hehe. Still no letter or call here. How did you move up on the waitlist? Or do you mean that they've started calling & you're high up on the waitlist (which is apparent). How is your friend, the one who's also waiting? My torch of hope is slowly dying out... Hehe. How sad. I wonder if it's bc I'm a 2nd Bachelor, among other things...

I just recieved an acceptance letter. I didn't say anything about the waitlist. Good luck Xtine!!

Are you guys on facebook??

it* didn't say anything about the waitlist I mean

Congrats everyone! I look forward to meeting you all in July. I hope everyone on this thread who doesn't have a letter of acceptance yet gets one...the dialog demonstrates some serious nursing school dedication. Woohoo!

Congrats Peoplehelper, way to go!!:yeah: Do you mind sharing your stats with us?

I called Canada this morning and I did not get in. She said there will be a meeting in June for people who did not get in to go over their applications. Ugh, I am beyond bummed...

HI CAandgelindisguise,

Sorry for the late reply. I am new to the nursing world and didn't exactly know nursing was my dream job until we locked eyes last year while observing nurses at SF General's E.R. (heros). My stats are such: I'm have a BA in International Studies and minor in Spanish, have lived in Mexico studying Spanish in college. I currently do part time clinical research at UCSF/SF General's emergency department where I manage a study and train research interns to collect data (I started as a volunteer and actively sought out this opportunity), then I recently began working part time doing more clinical research at UCSF's Osher Center for Integrative Medicine, I have a 3.8 in prereq's and took many pre-med courses which surprisingly matched up with SFSU's requirements for the program (I had little hope), I took my classes at SFSU's post-bacc pre-health program. Since I am older (27), I've had more time than some to get a lot of healthcare volunteering under my belt by way of volunteering at Children's Hospital's and others. Hang in there if you didn't get in the first time...just know I had to wait awhile before I applied. It's a ripening process. I would suggest training for a CNA program or something similar. After doing admission research, I found that many schools highly value a previous CNA. It's what I was about to do next if I didn't get in.

Take care!

Hi xtine009,

I don't think being a second bachelors student will hurt your chances. I'm a second bachelors student too, and so is peoplehelper. The only disadvantage is that we are really limited with the types of financial aid that we can receive. A large portion of it will probably have to be private loans... For me, it's totally worth it though.

Hi Torasamu,

You just mentioned financial aid as a 2nd degree and reminded me that I should do my budget again. I think I will barely make it with the offer + a part time job (8hrs/week). But not sure if there will be added costs and how much they will be....nursing uniform, kits, tools. What avenues are you finding for extra aid? I have researched scholarships, but most deadlines have passed.
