    Stony Brook BSN - Summer/Fall 2011 Applicants

Hey Diva! You pretty much have all of January "off" ... You have classes on Wednesday (1-3pm for Pharm) & Friday (10am-3pm for Patho/Pharm). People went away every weekend, but you should really be studying for Pharm =P

    Stony Brook BSN - Summer/Fall 2011 Applicants

Hey misStaken, The workload is def intense. But, I keep telling myself this is what I signed up for. They walk us through it though... they say they "hold our hands" in the summer time w/ "simulation labs" & only one clinical shift/week, then in the Fall, they give us 2 clinical shifts & ridiculous amounts of paperwork/projects, and in the Spring... well, we're in it now, and there's a test every week until April 15 (we have 5 classes). I'm actually super excited at this very moment b/c we just took a test, and the next one isn't until next Wednesday, so I can "rest" tonight before waking up @ 5am tomorrow =P I worked full time as well while going to night classes, and as much as I hated it back then, I think I dislike it more now because I really despise studying, studying, and more studying. The worst is Pharm! It really sucks the life out of you, but if you manage your time well, you'll do just dandy. I still have a life... I don't pull all nighters and manage to go to happy hours =) It really depends on the type of person you are & how you handle stress (& find an awesome study buddy). Also, during the month of January, you're only in class 2 days/week, so there's this lazy lull that comes over ppl (myself totally included), so you have all the time in the world to study & party, but for some reason, studying gets put on the back burner... don't let that be you! It took me awhile to get back on the fast track. But seriously, the time in this program flew now that I look back. I live off campus w/ 2 other ppl from the program, & we found each other here on allnurses, & after I started a FB group, we found a place on Craigslist and finalized everything via FB/email while my awesome roomies did all the leg work here in NY. I was going to find a room by myself, but my situation could not have worked out better. Living w/ ppl from the program def has it's advantages... esp since I was from CA. If you're from NY, you could always go to the first day of classes and make an announcement to see if others want to get a house together (which did happen to a group of ppl in our class).

    Stony Brook BSN - Summer/Fall 2011 Applicants

Congrats to all that have gotten in so far! I totally remember being in your shoes last year... obsessively waiting for acceptance letters in the mail... trying to figure out if it was alphabetized or if there was a secret code/method to their madness. I'm currently in the accelerated program w/ dfgo & Mellie, and I'm sure if you needed any other info., we'd be glad to share (as they already have). I had to check up on you guys b/c they informed me that you were getting the infamous "solar tabs" ... fun. As for PACO... had to give a big shout out, b/c we were in this same boat last year together, & I'm so very happy you made it... I know you'll be from out-of-state, but don't let that deter you from making the big trip over. It's definitely an adventure... I made the trek out from California, & as much as I miss my friends & family, I do not regret my decision whatsoever. I've made awesome friends & time is flying by! Good luck to everyone & hope to see you in the Summer!

Stony Brook U ABSN - Summer 2010 Applicants

Hi Paco... We started orientation 4 days ago & just got out of our second full day of lectures. On the first day, 6 ppl did not show up, so the program called the waitlist. We now have 4 new classmates, and I'm not sure if they will call anyone else... but if they did, you would be quite behind already.

SFSU Generic MSN for Fall 2010

Hi eriklee, The students were pre-nclex who were shadowing our head RN... barely did any invasive procedures. And, I've heard that ppl in CA usually have to jump through hoops to get their RN license prior to graduation. I'm glad you're hearing good stuff about the program though. Like I said, I loved SFSU when I went there for my undergrad, so hearing the opposite broke my heart a little...

SFSU Generic MSN for Fall 2010

Hi everyone... I didn't want to post this here b/c the admins of SFSU probably read this, but oh well... they should read this (they most likely know all about it anyways). I've had several ppl tell me that this program is not all that it's supposed to be. The students who are in the program now say that they would not have gone here if given a second chance to do things over again (I work in a clinic where 3 students have done 1-2 day "clinicals/internships"). The classes are either impacted or cut, so what should be a 2.5 year program turns out being 3-4 yrs. I met a lady in a bar last week who overheard that I had gotten into Stony Brook's ABSN but that even though I had yet to hear from SFSU, I had made up my mind to go to NY. She told me I had made a good decision b/c she had graduated from there last year & had a hard time getting the needed classes & now, she can't even find a job (but that may be b/c of myriad of reasons: the bay area has too many new nurses, she wasn't a good student or interviewee... who knows). I wouldn't say this if it were just "hearsay." I want to look out for those who may have other schools waiting for their decision. Def do some research... Not every school is ideal BUT I have not heard anything positive regarding the GMSN program (the best so far: "it's okay but they could stand to fix a few things"). I am a former SFSU alum & I loved the school... I love SF... but unless they've fixed things in the past year, I'd be weary. If this is your only option, then go for it! What's there to lose, right? You'll still be a nurse, & if you study hard & fight for what's right, you'll be just fine. BUT, if you have options, please think twice. The run around w/ letters is already a scary feeling & a foreshadowing about the program, no?

Mas_B, FrankieFresh, & FL4763 ... did you figure out your housing situation? Looks like we're all in the same boat... maybe some/all of us can be roomies? Just a thought...

Stony Brook accelerated BSN - Summer 2010 start

Since I was an alternate up until a month and a half ago... I'm behind the game. Did you guys already get financial aid packets? How do I apply for summer aid? I filled out my FAFSA, but my SOLAR doesn't give me indication that I will get aid. I'm lost... I'm afraid I won't have loans/grants/scholarship opportunities. Maybe I should call the school... Also, for those looking for housing off campus, how's that going for you guys? I'm flying into town June 18th & hope to score a place w/in two weeks (wishful thinking... pretty much going on craigslist & looking at every possible place). I have family in New Jersey & will commute until a decent place takes me in. Are people thinking of getting a place together?

SFSU Generic MSN for Fall 2010

tlw87... I had no recommendations from professors... only my volunteer/work related experiences. I've been accepted to Stony Brook & wait-listed @ Columbia (I'll find out in a week), so I'm assuming it's okay (not ideal) to not have any academic related letters of rec. But, I'm sure every school is different. I was in the same boat (received A's in my pre-reqs, but didn't know the profs well), so when it came time to choose recommenders, I decided to ask my former supervisor, current supervisor, & volunteer coordinator - all healthcare related. And of course, choosing this way, I was confident that they would write stellar letters b/c they knew me so well & could give more insight into my personality & potential for success as an RN...

spearlm1... thanks for all the info!!! I'm still on the waitlist, but it's good to know if I have to decide between Columbia & Stonybrook.

Stony Brook U ABSN - Summer 2010 Applicants

hey itsme583, or whoever else may know... how do you apply for this full tuition scholarship (can you paste the link)? I've searched SBU website & I'm trying to figure out if we qualify for scholarships as a 2nd bacc/post bacc student. Since we are advised not to work, I need to figure out how I'll support myself. I'll most likely take out loans, but any extra $ would be sweet. Also, are there any ppl coming from out of state looking for off campus housing? I've searched craigslist, but I'm sure there are other resources. I just need a simply furnished room in a decent house... I wouldn't mind sharing an apartment w/ fellow students, but that may be harder to put into motion since we may be coming from all over the place (& I don't expect to get to NY until June 20th).
