SFSU/Canada College BSN Applicant Thread, Fall 2009 Cohort

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hello Everybody,

I thought I would make a thread for those of us who will be applying to the SFSU/Canada College BSN program, fall 2009 cohort. Maybe we could share our stats, frustrations, thoughts about the nursing profession, etc.

As for me, I have two prerequisites left to complete. I am taking one right now, and I will take the last one during spring 2009. I anticipate that I will have about a 3.7 GPA in the prerequisite courses.

I have also met two of the supplementary criteria. With as competitive as it is, I know that it's pretty much a coin toss as to whether I get in or not. I'm just hoping for a little luck.

Good luck to all of you.

PeopleHelper,

For now, I'm just planning on taking out some federal and private loans. I'm also searching for scholarships, but I haven't found anything yet. I've read that sequoia hospital offers a nursing school scholarship, but I've been all over their website and I haven't been able to find any information about it.

Cindy, who works at the SFSU financial aid office and takes care of the nursing students at Canada, will be at our orientation. Hopefully she will give us some information about it.

Hi Torasamu,

Thanks for sharing your financial strategy....I too searched the sequoia website for this scholarship also! Couldn't find it either. It's a relief to know that Cindy will be at the orientation. Thanks for your help.

Thanks for the info Torasamu! Still waiting...

I was thinking though... since talk of financial aid came up... maybe this is a blessing in disguise b/c I could keep working, pay off my debts, & save a little to lessen the loans later. But really, I don't want to wait another year... haha!

Hi,

Maybe this was asked before, sorry if so, but were any of you already in this program able to work a couple days a week? From what I was told, working even a couple days a week is difficult. What does a regular school week look like?

Ken

Has anyone seen their status change to "accepted" on the SF State Admission Status page?

Hi PeopleHelper,

My status changed, finally. It took a while after receiving the letter. I'm really looking forward to our orientation. I heard that it will be on July 30th now, at Sequoia Hospital.

ok i need help. i know you guys are all celebrating the fact that you got in and all. once again, great job! you deserved it.

my problem comes from the fact that my final grades for the spring '09 semester came. well the problem is that i got an A- in my CSU-GE A3 course(critical thinking course which is also an sfsu nursing prereq). i was thinking if i should repeat it with a different type of critical thinking course but would still satisfy the CSU-GE A3 requirement over the summer online. that way, i'd have a chance to still get an A, not an A-, and it'd show that i didn't repeat a nursing prereq, just took a different critical thinking course that i can use for the applications instead of the A- course. i calculated that if i get all As from the rest of my prereqs(physio and anat), then the max prereq GPA i can get is a 3.90 by the end of the fall '09 sem. as of right now though, the max is a 3.8--- with the A-.

what should i do? i know that the applicants and the competition are fierce, especially the whole "scare" last 2 years ago(if you read the past sfsu posts, then you know what i'm talking about).

by the way, wish me luck next semester! i'm applying for the 1st time and excited!

thanks

Solidus Snake, if taking the other course and getting an A can boost your GPA from a 3.8 to a 3.9, then I would go for it.

On a different note, I'm really surprised by all of the requirements that SFSU has (segment 3, JEPET, etc.) I just realized that I will probably have to take English 214, and maybe a segment 3 cluster on top of my nursing courses :-( I received my first degree at Berkeley, so I'm hoping that that will cover the segment 3. But, it's still listed as outstanding on my DARS report, so I don't know. Oh well... I really need to meet with a counselor to find out exactly what I need to do.

Good luck with Anatomy and Physiology next semester!

alright, then i will! thanks torasamu! and thanks for the good luck on the both anatomy and physio. it's going to be one tough semester but at least my last semester of prereqs for SFSU. also, i'm thinking of starting a new thread, similar like this one sometime soon, for those like me who are applying to SFSU on the next cycle. this thread, along with the people in it, have severely helped me out a lot.

thanks.

torasamu - how did you find out about the orientation being on July 30 at Sequoia?

hi all, i just got accepted to sfsu nursing for spring 2010 after being on the waitlist. also, i have already turned in my acceptance packet to chico for fall 2009. sfsu was #1 choice but when i was waitlisted, i accepted chico's offer. should i go to sfsu or chico? please reply soon as i have less time to make a decision. is anyone currently attending sf? if so, how nice are the instructors/clinical sites? do they try to "weed out" people?

I think it depends on where you want to live. Both are good nursing programs.
