sextuplets

Specialties NICU

So the sextuplets in AZ were born yesterday at 30 weeks gestation according to the Today Show this morning. During the show, Meredith mentioned another set of sextuplets born (I forget where) at 22 weeks. All I can say is Ugh...

I haven't seen anything more than triplets. I can't imagine being in the OR for anything more, our ORs are so small!

This sounds so cynical, but I just wonder how long it'll be before the others die. So sad. I just can't begin to imagine having 6 kids and (probably) never taking them home.

It's the cell in the ovary that contains the ovum.

 That's what it seemed like from what I was reading but that seems almost incomprehensible that anyone (meaning the MD) would go forward with it!!!

ITA with this article... I don't understand the rush to call these births ''miracles''. They didn't occur at God's hand, they occurred at the hands of medical technology and if we haven't figured out the difference yet, God help us all.

I'm so glad you said that. Its completed true - you cant call IVF "gods gift" considering you had to use medical technology to achieve it! God didnt give you 6 babies at a time either, the procedure/medicine did.

So so glad you brought that up.. I 100% agree with you.

The Dr shouldn't have gone through with it, and the couple shouldn't have done it either!

She wasn't infertile, she had been pregnant twice and miscarried twice. If I had to guess (just based on my on experiences) I'd say she went along with the IUI because she thought that most of those 13 follies had bum eggs in them. She probably thought that there'd be at least one good egg.

My dh would never allow an IUI with 13 follies!

Kudos to that writer! Perhapes it will take a tragedy like loosing the 22 weekers and the near death experience of the 30 weeker mom to make fertility docs re examine their aggresssive treatments. One can only hope.

I agree as well. I know we all want that feeling of growing a child inside us, what a wonderful thing that is, but you know there are LOTS of wonderful things in this world that we can't all have.

I'm not averse to a little medical intervention, but this is WAY over the top. And for ANYONE to have such a selfish procedure as this completed and expect the rest of the country to pick up the tab is ridiculous.

I would like to add that the Dad has some nerve expecting the hospital to write off thousands his insurance won't cover. How did they pay for the fertility treatments in the first place? Come on, be responsible for your actions.

Dad may have nerve asking for this, but in the end, it's going to happen. I doubt a father of 6 is going to honor this obligation. Good Sam probably knew it going in.

I'm sure you are correct. They are probably weighing the pros of the PR against the cons of eating the bill. Doesn't make it right and certainly goes against my upbringing which was to get out of trouble the same way I got in: by myself!
