sextuplets

Published

So the sextuplets in AZ were born yesterday at 30 weeks gestation according to the Today Show this morning. During the show, Meredith mentioned another set of sextuplets born (I forget where) at 22 weeks. All I can say is Ugh...

I haven't seen anything more than triplets. I can't imagine being in the OR for anything more, our ORs are so small!

The father seemed pretty proud of that, actually. The radio DJ had done IUI's himself, and straight out asked him if they did an US to check for follicles. When he said he had 13, he kinda laughed and just seemed really proud of that.

He said they used Follistim as the fertility med.

Interesting. So I am assuming they didn't tell the parents the risk/parents didn't care? Or is it a "My wife has more follicles than your wife" manly thing? :lol2:

I really think there should be some sort of law against inseminating when more than 3 follicles are seen. It sounds like the Arizona sextuplets at over 3 pounds each (except one) are going to be fine but the Mom is in critical condition with heart failure. So 6 babies, perhaps without their mother.

The Minnesota sextuplets were born at only 22 weeks. Not much likelihood of them all surviving. Those that do will surely suffer severe physical handicaps.

I just don't understand all the happiness in this. They said they are God's gift to them. Not really, God gives us babies one, two, or three at a time and rarely more. When you give birth to a litter of children that "blessing" has been forced into the woman's uterus and in my opinion, totally selfish. I agree that I could not go along with selective reduction once pregnant with six but why six in the first place. What's wrong with one or two at a time?

Sadly, there is not much likelihood of ANY of them surviving. 22 week singletons rarely survive, and a singleton would likely be significantly larger than a sextuplet. I haven't seen any birth weights published for these babies. I suspect they are all well under 1lb. How terribly sad for the babies and parents.

As for the Phoenix couple and their physician(s), I agree that it was terribly irresponsible to proceed with insemination KNOWING that there were 13 follicles. The physician should be held to account by the medical board, and the parents should be held to account as well. I am saddened to hear that the mother is experiencing serious cardiac complications. I hope that her complications are as well publicized as the babies' progress so as to deter future physicians and patients from taking risks with high order multiples.

I think I read that all but one of the 22wkers weighed less than a lb.

In this context, what's a follicle?

I just read one of the 22 weekers expired. I hope it was peaceful.

You are completely right. I wonder if the parents even realize that its an if they will survive, that its not a sure thing. Do they even realize that 99% of the time a 22weeker that does make it and goes home is trached, vented, GB fed, requires numerous meds and therapies, drs visits, have numerous problems.. etc.

What a shame if they had 6 to take home with the above issues..

Its just a sad case.

I'm glad the other set got to 30 weeks, I think thats wonderful. However, they will be a blessing if each baby is completely healthy.

I do have to confess though, I love the show on Discovery Health called "John and Kate + 8". They have beautiful 2 year old sextuplets with no medical problems.

However, I cant imagine choosing to bring 6 children into the world, at one time! I like my figure too much :)

:( How sad for the family..

It's the cell in the ovary that contains the ovum.

It's sad and appalling at the same time! I can't imagine the family with the 22 wkrs taking any of them home!

...and that is the tragic reality of it. I agree totally.

When will women go back to having babies instead of litters?

I'm all about fertility drugs helping the infertile, but jeez!
