hey i never ment to rain on anyones parade. to be honest there is a part of me that misses getting that excited. its hard to find people who understand as there are few forums for student midwives which is why i love to read the threads here. they seem to reflect how i feel at times. sorry to those i have offended. it is such a amazing and sad feild we all work in and sometimes you just need a shoulder and an understanding ear.

Iv's sterile feilds, preps, calling for the doc at a nvd. hee hee i am sorry but we midwives do 70% probably more of the delieveries by ourselves with a back up midwife. AND I WASN"T TRAINED AS A NURSE!!! I respect what you guys do and a first catch is amazing, it took me a few days before i came down, but what gets me really excited now is an unmedicated birth with no intervention at all. Women feel so empowered and it is great to help them get the birth they want. Sometimes i wish more people could see how natural birth can be. No iv's, no ctg, nothing but the women, her support and a midwife or two......lovely....you should come down here and see our style of practice. we have autonomy and are Lead Maternity Carers. we do referrals and antenatal and six weeks postnatal. Babies dont even get seen by paeds unless we refer. home birth is at about 10% and rising. water birth is used and we celebrate with our women every day throught the normal everyday experince of birth. I LOVE IT!!!!

Please excuse my ignorance, but I am a second year Midwifery student and i have had eleven catches. catching is the easy part, it is the care either side of the catch that is the difficult part!!. Last week I had a g4 p3 who had been fit and well untill 10 mins before the delievery. bp of 125/185, nearly did my head in. I also got to see my first manual removal of a placenta. Thnak goodness the Ob was there, but as a First year i got my first catch while the midwife was off getting the forcepts to rattle at our woman who just wouldnt push the baby out. i told her we could do it and we did. Just as the head was crowning the midwife, ob and back up midwife walk in! I got a pat on the back for that one!

my most interesting birth so far was a fotling breech at 36 weeks, was off to ot for a lscs when she started pushing.....

gee that sounds like a great woman to care for. these programmes are so unrealistic and i think the guys who make these shows have alot to answer for. they paint an almost unobtainable picture to the general public who take anything on tv as gosple and then wonder why labour is so long, rough, messy....ggggrrrr.....i almost want to blame the rising intervention rates on them and their edited "birth" entertainment....you just cannot call it educational. it the climate of fear.......ggggrrrrr

i am training to be a midwife in New Zealand and our model of practice is quite different to what you guys have, in fact it is unique to New Zealand. It is based around a treaty that was singed with the Maori people about 160 years ago. We aim to work in partnership with our women, they can changed midwives when they want, and there is an equal sharing of power in the relationship. as far as i know, the only unassisted childbirths we have are the unplanned kind. we have planned homebirths, birthing centers and hospitals and the women can choose where they give birth. the thing that amazes me now is just how foruntane we are here. after i graduate, i can work in a hospital or become an independant midwife with my own clients.oh and by the way......i was direct entry with no nursing background.....come to new zealand...we have a huge shortage of midwives....and the weather is good too!!!!!

i agree with the others on this one.....the more ves the greater the chance of infection . i had one of my women get to a certain point and then just stop. i just want to know as a student why not do something else rather than a c section....i mean 9 is pretty close? why not try and stretch it just that bit further....surely that would be better than a c section???

my heart goes out to you....he looks sooo much like my son who is nearly the same age now....who has had health problems but not as bad as your wee guy. our children enspire us to be more than we could imagine. they birth in us dreams we never knew we had. my guy even has the same pokemon toy.how easly that could be my guy....blessings to you

we need to educate women about their bodies more. the pelvic floor gets stretched carrying around a pregnant uterus anyway. sheesh are people stupid enough to really believe that a c section is any less painful than a lady partsl delievery????:angryfire:flmngmd:

if the craving gets too much, try changing brands, one with a different scent. it is fairly common,but i would not drink it. your a sensible person and know that im sure. good luck with the rest of your journey

i had my brother and his significant male other in the room when i had my first. the nurse looked at my brother and asked if he was the dad. nup he said, the other just said i dont do thst .....was funny at the time.....oh and a bit off the subject, i knew of a single mum who got back with the first babies daddy just so her kids could have the same father. then broke up with him as soon as she was pregnant......oh my......:jwdrp::omy:

oh and im not using any aides like patches or gum. and i dont feel any great loss. strange, must have just been my time too quit.:w00t:
