I asked the boys, about 40 of them, aged from 16-18 if they'd ever watched Media, and they all laughed.
'Shall I take that as a yes?' I asked, and there were further chuckles and nodding heads all round.
You see, as the school nurse, I'd been asked to talk to the senior boys about 'sex and all that sort of stuff.' With such vague guidelines, I chose to talk about an area that has been coming an ever increasing concern.
'Do you like it?' I asked, and no one said outright they liked it.
'Do you think it's healthy or harmful?' They all said it's harmless, because the participants were consenting adults. So I asked them what's their favorite type of Media, and the answers were varied, although hot young blondes, and horny teens topped the list of favorites.
'Was that 'horny teen' legal?' I asked, and the laughter died away. They'd never thought of that before, they'd also never thought of sex-slavery, but now wasn't the right time to talk about that, as I felt they would stop listening if I started lecturing.
Although Ivan, one of the Russian lads raised his hand in protest. 'But sir, I only watch **** Media.' The room erupted, and the merits of **** Media were briefly discussed. I decided to get personal.
I asked them to raise their if they wanted to get married and have kids one day, and they all raised their hands.
'So what age is it okay for your son to watch Media?' They paused, giving it serious thought, before generally deciding that around 14yrs old is good.
'And what age is it okay for your daughter to watch Media?' I was greeted with silence.
No one wanted their daughter to ever watch Media, because deep inside of them, they know Media is not good, and they know it is degrading to women, regardless of consent.
We talked about other things, from relationship to STD's, but only briefly, because there's only so much you can teach them in one-off, one hour session.
But I wasn't there to lecture them, but hopefully to get them to think.
You all do realize that a lot of the "Media" the kids are exposed to is not "actors and actresses" with 401K and dental plans but their own 14 year old classmates masturbating on snap chat, right?
That is obviously not okay and something most definitely should be done about that. I'm just referring to what I guess I would call "old fashioned" Media since using social media to distribute child Mediaography (or just Media in general) is all the rage now. I guess googling "boobs" has fallen to the wayside in terms of Mediaography.
This is a good example of cultural lag. With the huge advances made in technology, culture is struggling to keep up.
On a side note, when I was in high school (2006-2010) a teenager having a smartphone meant that their parents were loaded. They were rare to see. Now a mere 5 years later, it's weird to see someone using a non-smartphone. I got my first cell phone my freshman year of high school and it was a motorola razr. Now, I see 6th graders with iPhones. It's shocking.
There's lots of people who kind of think that way, Red.Is Media legal? Mostly.
Is it moral? That's up to each person to decide for themselves.
Was the Holocaust legal? I'm not sure, it was government sanctioned.
Was it moral? Hell no, but there's people who are okay that it happened and still try to practice it today.
Sad, sad little people.
Some people will say "hey if it's legal when I'm alive it's okay!"
Some won't. :shrugs:
It makes more sense in my head. I have a hard time communicating sometimes.
Not to mention she's comparing things people are forced into with no choice & Media (something people are doing willingly). I can't compare apples & oranges.

Agree.
Media is something actors do. Sexting is something people shouldn't do, lol. But do regardless & kids should be educated on. Snapchat is a good example of sexting.

Even in ye olden days of 2006 there were issues with sexting at my school, but of course it wasn't called sexting then. I vividly remember one girl's nude photo being distributed to almost the whole school. She sent it to ONE guy. He sent it to all his friends. His friends sent it to their friends, etc . Fortunately I was one of the people that DIDN'T get it. It sounds like something out of a bad teen movie, but unfortunately it happened.

The stuff kids are exposed to is way beyond sexting and more apt to NOT be movies with actors being paid and Burt Reynolds making sure they didn't do TOO much coke. (Yea, I like Boogie Nights.)

My first cell phone senior year (2003) was a Sony Ericsson that had a separate camera you had to plug in to use.
