I love being an LPN and I try to stay away from threads that put nurses down based on their title and/or degree. I also avoid the real-life nurses who do this as well.

Full disclosure: I am working on my RN, but only due to the crushing overage of LPNs in my area. If I could get enough work, I would happily work out the rest of my days as an LPN.

my only advice is that if you have the time and money might as well be an rn. at least in acute care on some units you have pretty much the same duties and pts but the pay is alot less

In an ideal world this would be an option open to all LPNs. Here in Canada the only way to RN status is to go back to university to complete a four year degree. Depending on when you graduated as a PN and which province you live in you will be required to do three years at university. It's just not an option for many when they are carrying student loans from PN College, some do it but either have family help in the money department or put it off for over five years.

I worked it out once. I'm in my 50's. I work part time and like Canadian nurses have an employer's pension plan and benefits with my job. By the time I had factored in lost wages (clinical are unpaid and I don't have enough vacation yearly to cover them), lost pension contributions, student loans, books, etc. I realized that I would have to work full time until I was 63 to get back what I had lost by ugrading my education. I plan on retiring at 60-62 from my job.

The younger LPNs that I work with are watching what our health authority is doing with the staffing ratios. It really appears to be happening that when an RN retires or leaves, management is evaluating the need for an RN in that position. What we are seeing is an increase in LPN positions on the floor. In the last four years, ICU, NICU,Day Surgery, and Corrections have opened up and are hiring LPNs in at least a 50/50 ratio. The RNs appear to be doing what the degree was designed for, heading off to management and research positions.

Our profession is in a change pattern and by the time I retire in the next decade it will be very different from the one I entered in 2000.

People come on the board to vent and share. The experiences of some don't speak for all.
Look at the NCLEX forum. Those posters will have you believing that the test really is that rigorous and difficult. Actually...it isn't. In fact, 80%+ actually pass (PN AND RN).
For my part? I don't like to make anyone feel bad about themselves, but...I thought the exam was pretty easy. Too easy. There's a degree of difficulty, yeah - but it's 70% 'hype'.
...as it is with the rest of the nurse forum. I've not had the issues that some do. For example, my coworkers are great. We back each other up.
Whole lotta grammer nazi's on the buoard, though....LOL
Well, I'll tell you what I think (since we're all in the 'let's be honest' spirit): If a simple speech error is enough to wreck your inner world? I... wanna be you.
I want a life so perfect that I have to practically invent things to mindlessly b.tch about -- and we're not even talkin' about whatever's going on in anyone's 'real life', here. I'm talking about people getting their panties bunched over some dialogue ... on a message board ... in VIRTUAL WORLD ....

Really...? Is this happening? Are we really doing this...? LOL
Some have major problems with speech errors and such? Understandable. I, for one, tend to not care for individuals who spend unnecessary amts of energy + time making issues out of non-issues.
It's just... 'petty'.

It's a small thing to be overly concerned with.
Go work at a soup kitchen...y'know what I mean? Organize a clothing drive. Mentor a child. Protest the wars. Find a better use for excess energy. Get 'peeved' about things that actually matter in the REAL WORLD.
I'm type 'A', yes (and quite anal)...but I like to think of myself as a 'sunnier' version(LOL) in that, unlike the bulk of them?
I ...don't take myself that seriously.
On another note, OP starts this thread to complain about those who complain about their jobs and misspell words. Yet, I see:

I'm guessing that you, MedChica, are not annoyed by poor spelling and grammar, or, dare I say, don't see the problem.

I'm not trying to change the world, I was merely pointing out the fact that way too many people either don't care what they write in a public forum or they are uneducated on proper grammar and spelling, so I guess, if the shoe fits, wear it!

I'm not trying to change the world, I was merely pointing out the fact that way too many people either don't care what they write in a public forum or they are uneducated on proper grammar and spelling, so I guess, if the shoe fits, wear it!

"...Don't see the problem." For me, it has a lot to do with the English teachers I had in high school. Poor grammar and punctuation was absolutely not tolerated. It was a value instilled in me at a young age to hold myself to a higher standard. Perhaps I would not have seen the problem, had I not have known Mr. Tannery or Mr. Durishin. It's certainly helped me stand head-and-shoulders above the crowd when I needed to make an impression where it mattered to my future. I'm certainly not perfect, but I want to be taken seriously as an educated professional, so I care about my written and oral expression. And yes, I sometimes screw up, especially on my iPhone. But I do get embarrassed and try to correct things when it allows me!

I'm beginning to wonder if those who teach in BSN programs in general care about language skills anymore, based on what I see here frequently.

I'm wondering if they figure all documentation will be in flow-sheet or EMR formats, so those skills aren't important anymore. I never correct other people's mistakes here because I know I'm not perfect myself but I came pretty close to it the other day. It was a short paragraph extolling the benefits of their bachelor's in nursing education while using at least two incorrect usages of "your" and "there". It was cringe-worthy, and much as I hate to say it, it gave the opposite impression to what this person's words were attempting to convey.

wow you guys must be from above the mason dixon line, have to be, one issue with the younger nurses is that like myself in the state of Georgia, high schools are focused more on mathematics and sciences, as the curriculum turns to begin preparing students for the "technology age" when i was in school coming up we spent way more time on software and how to research using the then fairly new worldwide web, and solving mathematic equations than we ever did learing where to put a semicolon and lets face it were nurses have you ever seen perfect diction, grammar, or spelling on a nurses note... + in Ga with a very heavy southern accent get things done, no one accept people who aren't from here ay anything about so as long a i dont leave ga for Michigan, or new york i'll be fine often it's more admirable to be true of one's self than to speak with perfect grammar and diction at atleast here the brogue's, seem to be alittle mor approachable... and regard the LPN v.s RN i see both sides it's very difficult to get away from it when it's what is reflected every day of your working life, it wa so funny the first day of my new job some years ago i had to tell the administration what they could use me for because the weren't sure what to do with this LPN, but they liked me, they kept referring to their little reg book guess what in Ga LPN=SN, regs are written in hospice for SN, only RN are CM n GA by law I can do what an RN does as long as i have superior to answer to, except hang blood and pronounce death... so no it doesnt matter but even now i get well i need to speak to the RN, and the RN politely tells them every time well he knows more about you than i do we'll let him handle it just funny you make your own reputation and outcomes, embrace it and you'll win , depose and you need to find something else thats my rant on the word nazi and explaination to why it is a forefront in conversation

I haven't noticed any differences in written expression between nurses from southern states or any other region. The truth is people form impressions based on your command of the language. Each person can then decide for themselves how they wish to implement that knowledge in their daily lives.
