Seattle University APNI 2016 Applicants

Published

I thought I would start a thread for applicants to the 2016 MSN for Non-Nurses: Advanced Practice Nursing Immersion at Seattle University. I am applying for the Family Nurse Practitioner specialty. Any other applicants for this cycle? Questions and comments regarding the program and admissions process are welcome!

I am in the program now. We have people with all sorts of backgrounds, from doctors (yes, really, someone who got a medical degree in another country and I think maybe one ND), pre-med, psych, to LAS backgrounds like myself (English lit, music anthropology, classics, theater).

& as far as experience, it's probably 50-50 with people who have any direct patient care (CNA, EMT, phlebotomist, etc.).

I'm not accepted (yet) but I would assume that the essay really has a lot to do with getting in. I think they really want to make sure that you are in line with their mission and want to work with underserved and vulnerable communities.

Good to hear LittleFeets! My essay really highlighted the underserved, frail and vulnerable....and least I think it did. Its really hard to explain all of the involvement without itemizing.

Congrats on your interview!!

Bummer about program discontinuing after this cohort. That's super unfortunate.

Woodlee - Congrats on getting accepted to the Accelerated BSN program! That's awesome! At least you know you have a great option if things don't work out with Seattle U.

LittleFeets - I'd like to *think* my essay highlighted wanting to work with underserved populations. It's actually a big reason why I fell in love with the program. My essay included a brief review of recent research indicating some of the stresses and mental health challenges families face, and linked it with evidence that factors that contribute to the onset of such conditions is more prevalent among disadvantaged and vulnerable populations, both in the United States as well as internationally. Having spent years studying how environment affects stress physiology and behavior, I am a huge proponent for the bioecological model of development. So, I couldn't help but inject some of my fascination into my essay. Of course, having to condense one's passion to a couple of pages always seems to leave things unsaid, so perhaps I omitted stuff that would have been better to include, and included stuff that would have been better to omit (I really tried to keep to the 2 pages that was recommended in the information session I attended). Further, coming from a background in scientific academia, the style of my writing tends to have a particular flavor to it. So, now I wonder if it came across poorly. The reality is that aside from wanting to be a practicing NP, I also want to conduct research on nursing practices so as to contribute to the improvement of nursing care and best practices. I'd really wanted to convey that in my essay, but perhaps it just didn't translate well. Oh well, I guess I just have to cross my fingers and wait and see.

Oregonian89 - Aw, thank you for the support! I genuinely appreciate it. I'm trying to remain hopeful, but I'm not banking on anything, as it's just so competitive. I'm very much a silver-lining kind of person though. So, I know that even if things don't pan out I'll land on my feet and end up where I want to be, one way or another. Though, my boyfriend lives in CA, and we'd been talking about my moving out there in the future, so this might just be the opportunity to allow me to do that, and then I can just go the traditional RN route down there, and get my NP after. Either way, I'll get there, even if it's not in my first choice program. :)

Hey All,

Question for y'all: If my status on my application says "pending faculty review" does this mean they haven't looked it over yet?

jomcnack- Not necessarily. I already had my interview and my app tracker still says pending faculty review.

jomcnack - Yeah, I think that "Pending Faculty Review" just means that they haven't made a decision yet (admission, waitlist, etc.). I think most, if not all, of the applicants status' say that.

For those interested: I was curious, so I spoke with the department and they confirmed that no, there will not be a Master's direct-entry option next year, but there will be a direct-entry option for the DNP program for those of you who were considering reapplying if you don't get in this year. Personally, I will probably go the more traditional route (i.e., get my RN first), but not because I wouldn't want to be in the program at SU (it's a great program and certainly I'd be there in a heartbeat if things pan out), rather because it looks like I'll be moving down to CA to be closer to my guy. :) Otherwise, I'd probably reapply next year. I know some of you weren't planning on getting a DNP, and preferred the Master's option, I wanted to let you all know, for those who think they might reapply next year if they don't get into this year's cohort.

Good luck to everyone who has interviews this weekend! Please keep us updated. Thinking great thoughts and sending good karma your way!

Cheers!

I think tomorrow is the big day for many of you! Good luck, everyone. I'm looking forward to hearing how everyone feels after the interview. Keep us posted!!

PallasAthene: I'm shocked that you haven't been invited for an interview, yet. Your background and credentials sound awesome!

If the past years are any indication, it seems like invites trickle out all month.

Could someone provide some more details on interview format?

It's my understanding for psych NP, it's 2 on 1 (both interviewers are faculty). Is this correct? Do you know if it's an open-file interview (i.e. will they have read your application)? Any good resources for practice questions?

Your essay sounds impressive! Did you also talk about why you want to be a nurse and how your experiences have led you to choose nursing as a field? Don't lose hope yet! I'm sure u will receive an interview :)
